I have an 87 (200K miles) and an 89 MJ (76K miles). Both are 4.0s and 5 speeds.  On the 89,  the clutch engages near the top of the clutch swing.  The 87 engages near the bottom and the pedal is spongy above full engagement. Neither has any slippage.  Based on appearances, neither clutch master cylinder or slave have been replaced or worked on in years.  I could not find what I was looking for in CC search so found this by using google.  This relatively short thread is more than 10 and a half years old.  I know of the corrosiveness of dot 3 on the fuse panel.  Is the rest of the info still current?  No clutch adjustment?  Many of the links no longer work. What is current with fluids?

The design of the MJ clutch hasn't changed. No, it's still not adjustable.

The newest DOT 5.1 brake fluid is less hygroscopic than DOT 3 and DOT 4, but it still attracts and holds moisture. I've been using DOT 5 silicone for more than twenty years, in brakes and clutches. Silicone is non-hygroscopic -- it won't attract or hold moisture vapor from the atmosphere.

Eagle, there is significance to the clutch engaging when pedal is close to floor?  It is a little funky going from one MJ to the other.

When the spring inside my master cylinder snapped in half, the clutch would only react at the bottom of the pedal travel.

That usually indicates that there is air in the system, or a leak. Low fluid means the peddle doesn't release the clutch all the way, so it engages closer to the floor when you let up on the peddle.
