ATF in oil

Recommended Posts

People do it... ATF has alot of detergents in it. its probably gentler and safer than engine flush. I would rather let chunks of carbon/parafine/gunk stick to what its stuck to. Its better than washing it off then running it through engine bearings. I have herd of stories of engines/auto transmission going out ofter being flushed. My friend ran this stuff http://www.auto-rx.com through his 258 now it knocks. If you do flush an engine with anything i would change the filter sevral times after the flush.

I don't know how conventional this is, but when we had our CJ we flushed it with kerosene. We drained the oil and filled it back with kerosene and started it up and let it idle for 5 mins. The Jeep guy that told us this also told us that YOU SHOULDNT TOUCH THE GAS PEDAL when you do this. The viscosity isnt there. It cleaned alot of things out, but the seals also started leaking afterward... I don't know if it helped things or hurt things in the long run...

The problem with engine flushes is it loosens all kinds of junk and build up in the motor, and thins the oil. Then they want you to run your engine for 10-20 minutes, and unless your engine is in good shape to begin with, it ussually plugs your oil pump, and filter thus sending more dirty and thinned oil thru your motor, thus wiping out your bearings, and cylinder walls. None of these things are good things.

I have heard of running kerosene (marvel mystery oil), ATF, and various other fluids thru your engine, it all seems like smoke and mirrors to me. Regular maintenace is key

i ran a quart of atf in my jeep no problems. i don't really think it did anything actually but i keep my oil changed every 3000 miles max. and only use fully synthetic oil, so it is always pretty clean inside.

If you're that concerned, use sea foam...

I use Seafoam in all my vehicles, 1/3 bottle in tank, 1/3 thru a vac line, and 1/3 poured in crankcase.

Can not say Ive EVER heard of, or seen posted, that anyone ever got a negative effect from seafoam.

But if your motor is already on it's last leg.. I agree w/the above statements... leave it alone... maybe just switch to 10w40 or synth.

MMO has it's places, it's a wonderful thing to free a sticky lifter.

It's not something I would run in the crankcase every day, but when I get a sticky lifter I pour some in and drive for a day and then change the oil.

I wouldn't use ATF or kero, but MMO doesn't thin the oil like those do.

after beating on my 86 manches 2.8 for more than 4.5 years with out an oil change i decided one day to change the oil after finding a very old bottle of motor flush at work, the directions said sometn bout donit cold and not revin it up but thats all i read (i don't follow directions well) so i poured it in and drove it around town and on the hiway beating on it ,an hour later i changed the oil. 2 years later i did the valve cover gaskets and clean as a wistle. i did the covers on my bros old 86 s10 2.8 and it was nasty /no motor flush but the oil was changed religously. his had 160,000 mine had bout 120,000
