UK MJ rebuild

Recommended Posts

Well after 8 XJs, 2 Wjs & a TJ I have finally found a MJ in the UK. Its very much a project jeep but they are so few and far between in the UK I had to get this one.

I haven't even seen it yet, all I know its a 1990 4litre 2wd. I have already sourced a 98 XJ for a parts car. Plan is to transfer all the running gear from the XJ, inc converting it to RHD, 4wd & auto plus the interior, front end & door swap!

Not much work then!

Oh and I am doing an axle swap too, just because I have a set of WJ variloc LSD axles lying around off a 3.1TD WJ, so they are geared with 3.91 ratios. I only plan a 3" lift and 31"s so should be spot on gear wise, plus I get bigger brakes and a disk rear end.

Watch this space, off to collect the thing a week saturday comanche.gif

I've ALWAYS wanted to do an RHD 97+ comanche. that firewall conversion will be fun, but at least the RHD steering box will bolt right in.

you will have to swap front axles as well, since the bracketry is all opposite.

good luck! and keep us posted!

Off to pick my rear D44 that has been living in a mates yard for a while. Also getting a set of JK 18" takes offs which will go onto my Grand to free up a set of rims to go onto the MJ. I am thinking a set of 17" Silverblade 3's to go with the modern look I am giving the truck.

With a set of 265-70-17 ATs thrown on them

I got lazy & weighing up the fuel costs I decided to get it delivered so for the cost of my fuel money plus £50 I save myself a days driving to pick it up. Arrives tomorrow afternoon, more pictures to follow

Is now a good time to admit I have never seen an MJ in the flesh let alone driven one :D

Great find and welcome to the madness! Hope you enjoy your very rare UK truck and hope we can help out in any way. Since that truck spent at least a little time in Florida it's a good chance it doesn't have a lot of rust, visible or hidden. Good Luck!

Buck.

from my brief look over it the underside seems very solid, has surface rust but nothing scaby or holed. Bed is in good condition, just a few bubbles alond the tailgate bottom, best bit is the deck is very straight, no dints in the wheelarches. Only downside is the cab gutters.

  • 10 months later...

Dear me, the MJ has been stuck in a container for 11 months with no work! :(

Start a new job next week with a decent pay raise, a mate is out of work at the moment so come the end of the month I am going to pay him to work on the jeep.

Question is what are my spring options for the rear, wanting to be able to load up the back without it sagging too much. Looking at a 3" front & 4" rear lift without a load in the back.
