zagscrawler
Hey guys can someone help me figure out the difference in some of the t-cases that are common under these things. Anything special about a 231 AMC? Thanks
jimoshel
Believed to be stronger than any of the others.
txjeeptx
231 AMC was made before the Chrysler takeover of AMC. Its the same as the 231J(and interchangeable, whole or interals), except that all AMC cases had 21 spline inputs, while the 231J has either 21 or 23 spline inputs depending upon which engine it was behind. The 4cyl 231J had 21 spline input. Seem to recall that some 6-cyl 231Js were also 21 spline input, but they were behind the Peugeot BA10/5. All 231Js behind the AX-15 and Aisin AW4 autowere 23 spline. (Correction: After 1990, thanks carnuck, didn't know pre-90 AW4s were 21 spline - so I can guess that nearly all AMC t-cases were 21 spline, then, because the AX-15 didn't show up until mid '89). zagscrawler
Thanks guys this one is behind an aw4. I'm having trouble getting it out of 4low at the moment but I'm sure it's probably in the linkage or shifter. Actually it will go into neutral fine but then has trouble getting back into any other gear. Any ideas?
Geonovast
Disconnect the linkage from the case, and see if it will shift fine with a wrench.
Pete M
when I bought my 90 I discovered the reason I couldn't get it out of 4-hi was that the shifter handle had rusted in place. hopefully yours is an easy fix and it just needs adjusting. :D

The AW4 was 21 spline until 08/90 and all the 4 cyls were 21 spline trans/tcases except the 3 speed auto which was a short 23 spline.
