So? How about another MJ! "She's a beauty, Clark!" I'm thinking old man truck fo' sho'! ... this would make number three for me. I guess that makes me a collector? Oh well... when it rains, it pours! Came from Verndale, so it was another drive to the north-country... not quite as far though. Didn't see any deer this time! Came up with a plan for this truck though! It'll be just another winter vehicle for the wife and I. Then after winter and my shop it up again, it'll go under the knife as I need a trail rig. Way I see it, I've got a pretty truck that's also a good tow rig, the '91 beater truck... er... great runner for less than desirable jobs, but nothing that I can throw around, bounce off a rock, or hang in a tree! I'm thinking of shortening the wheel base down to a two door XJ size so I can use a stock size driveshaft, fit in tighter trails, and build a small trailer to put it on. Probably Dana 30/44 combo, 3” lift, 33s, lockers, long arms in the front and maybe either just a simple spring over in the rear or put together a four link. Thanks MrSimon for the sample picture... this is what I have in my head: LWB: Way shortened: Either shorten the box sides and maybe dovetail, or build something custom. Neither one is really "me", but I just love the idea of this silly truck that I can smile about with every bounce off the rocks and respray with a rattle can when I get home. That's what I get for building a truck that I can't stand to park in a full parking lot! :shake: Small update as well, got the brakes all working. Took running a new line to the rear, getting rid of the proportioning valve, and new pads in the front. Other than that, I'm not sure what's up yet, but sometimes it takes a bit to start... cranks and cranks, then starts and dies. Crank sensor? Time to dig through the archives! Took care of some yard work this morning and got it stuck in the back corner of my property... I guess the "good 4x4" wasn't so good after all. Pulled it out with the Eliminator and went back to work with it. So, what else could it be but the CAD so that got locked in place with a big ol' stack of washers. Done! Also took a look at the lack of a speedometer. Needs a cable... not sure if I'll actually fix that or not. Pictures! Anyone need a bedliner? Simple stuff... changed the oil, finished the brakes in the rear so they don't lock up everytime I hit the pedal, and I got the speedometer working. The needle jumps around like an old librarian's finger showing the way to the fiction section, but it works! What happened was the cable broke so I went in and changed it out. Not a big deal, but not sure why the needle jumps like it does. It's not terrible by any means, just rattles between 5 mph of how fast you're actually going. Eh... oh, well. I know, it would've been cooler and just as easy to swap in a full gauge cluster, but I already had the tach sitting around. The way I see it, I've got less of a chance to see if there is anymore wrong with the truck with less gauges! neohic Posted January 16, 2012 Author Share Posted January 16, 2012 Odd question... has anyone ever been changing their oil, looked in the catch pan and thought to themselves, "Well, hu... that doesn't look like 6 quarts now does it?". Well, I'd say I got about four quarts out of it today. I know that it leaks because, really, what 4.0L doesn't but I never really thought it was that bad! Where was it going, you may ask? Behold!: Can't say that I've ever had a pool in my air box before! :eek: Not sure how far I want to dig into this. For sure a catch bottle will be fixed up under the hood for now. The upper part of the column: The column that uses the little bolt and needle (It refers to it as "Less tilt wheel"): The column that the indicator is off of (It refers to it as "With tilt wheel"): Close up of the indicator of your style: It looks as if you needed the whole collar, or "Shift bowl shroud", clip, and bracket in order to make it work as factory... neohic Posted January 20, 2012 Author Share Posted January 20, 2012 Took care of my blow by issue today. Local yard had a valve cover off of a '97 XJ for cheap. That and a matching gasket makes for a much happier old MJ. Still need to finish cleaning up the oil on the top side... Now whenever I have a good enough excuse to drop the oil pan, I'll change out the rear main to take care of the rest of the oil leak. Been kicking around the idea of removing all of the cruise control and A/C stuff too. Mostly just to clean things up but also because I hate looking at and working around components that don't work. neohic Posted February 12, 2012 Author Share Posted February 12, 2012 Starting to collect some parts for this thing's transformation. I nabbed a set of used 4.5" coils for the front for cheap today. Change of plans too... like everyone does when planning a project. I'm starting to think it'd be better for now to use 2wd leafs as SOA in the rear instead of a 4 link and coils. I know... not nearly as cool, but I'm forcing myself to stick to a strict budget on this one. Since it'll be just a trail truck, why spend the cash? Hang it in a tree or bounce it off a rock... smile about it and keep going! I still want to shorten the frame though. I can always go back and change up the suspension later on.
