Where to find new OEM parts?

Recommended Posts

I've got an '88 4.0 SWB and I need to pick up some OEM parts, such as parking brake cable and pull, seals for my vent windows, a new headlight harness plug, etc, etc. Where can I find such things? One place I found was www.teamcherokee.com, but they didn't have much of what I needed. Anybody know of any place else that sells this stuff, or I am I headed to the stealership? Thanks-

JOSH

I know the dealership has the ebrake cables. I bought all three this fall for $135.

Sometimes you can find your seals for windows and weatherstripping in a bodyshop catalog. (I'm glad I'm good pals with the owner...) I usually just get them off of other later model windows in the yards.

Couldn't sleep, so I figured I check up on this. Thanks for your help, that partsamerica site is helpful. The parking brake cable I need I guess is the release cable and t-handle, so that was just what I needed. The headlight plugs I'm gonna need are the ones that disconnect the entire headlight harness so you can remove the whole header panel with lights intact. As for the vent/wing window seals, will the seals from a window that doesn't open work on mine, which does open?

Make sure it's the seals that are bad. I've had several vent windows that leaked because the little posts (that the window pivots on) had wallowed out their holes making the window loose in the frame. A cheap fix is to shove coins under the lock. A better fix is the junkyard to get some windows that are in good condition. Or you can swap in non-vent ones if you don't really use the vents.

The seals for the fixed "vent" windows are completely different from the seals for the operable windows. FWIW, the operable windows ALL leak. I paid extra to get the operable vents on my 1988 Cherokee, which I bought new. The vents leaked from Day One. The "fix" that the factory rep wanted to apply was to replace the optional windows I had just paid extra for with the fixed windows. They weren't offering to refund the extra money I paid, so I told him to take a long walk off a short pier.

I periodically open the vents and apply Sil-Glyd (NAPA's brand of silicone grease) to the weatherstrip where the window makes contact. That's been working well for 19 years.

By the way -- Josh, the title of your post seems to be a little misleading. "OEM" means "Original Equipment Manufacturer," which translates to "factory." If you really want OEM parts, the answer is any Jeep or Dodge dealer. If you're willing to get parts that work from places like Advance/Checkers/Shucks or AutoZone, you'll save a bunch of money but the parts will not be "OEM."

On my cherokee I replaced the vent windows with fixed ones. Two reasons. One, they leaked. Two, they made it SOOOO easy to break into (electric door locks - use coat hanger). This was nice whenever I locked my keys inside, but otherwise was kinda scary.

Also, I don't smoke. The replacement was easy, and it didn't leak at all after that.

It would probably be easyer and cheaper to buy weatherpac connectors to use on the header panel wireing

http://www.weatherpack.com/connectors.html

painless wireing sells them to and the part numbers come up on parts americas website. so your local parts america/advance auto parts/western auto could probably order it in. And you could save on the shipping cost.
