87Chief
I've seem to be getting about 75-80 psi oil pressure lately... It has been like this ever since I got the truck. I plan on doing an oil change, and with that oil change I will be dropping the oil pan to see what condition the oil screen is in.. If the screen is in pretty good shape, what else could be the problem? Thanks
mnkyboy
Is that reading from the guage cluster or did you hook up an actual pressure guage?
87Chief
gauge cluster, I swapped gauge clusters, from an XJ but they both read the same pressure
mnkyboy
If the sending unit is messed up any guage cluster will read the same. You need to pull the sending unit out and hook a guage straight to the engine to see for sure what the pressure is.
skinnyg
If the oil pickup screen is clogged you would have LOW oil pressure.Replace the sending unit first and/or check pressure with a mechanical guage.
jpdriver1
mine reads the same until the engine warms up then drops midway between 40 - 50 at idle -- been that way for the 13 yrs I've owned her -- factory installed guage cluster
87Chief
I got a new sending unit not long ago and haven't had time to install it. I will install it today hopefully after painting the kitchen for my mom and see if it changes anything.
87Chief
IS this the oil pressure switch? I can not make it come off ABOVE the hose... But it turns below the hose... Is that correct?

Eagle
That's an oil pressure sender, but what's with the tee fitting and rubber hose just below it? What year MJ and what engine are we talking about?
airspeed
The hose coming out of the tee must lead to a oil cooler or an auxiliary oil filter. The oil sending unit should thread out of the tee. You need to hold the lower tee and thread the sending unit out. I have a picture of my setup, the tee goes to a mechanical gauge and the sending unit goes to the dash light. My 2.5 runs high oil pressure as well, ~70-80 when cold, ~30-50 warm.
87Chief
The hose on mine goes to I guess the vacuum "bubble" behind the front bumper... But I've tried to hold the T and screw the unit out but it won't budge..
mnkyboy
It wouldn't go to the vacuum ball,if it goes to the bumper someone must have added an oil cooler
87Chief
Got it installed but now it reads way passed 80... 180 degrees from when engine is shut off
87Chief
My grandfather did say he had amsoil installed on it... When I got the truck I never could find the amsoil system, but I guess I found it, right? haha
87Chief
I will try and get a picture of the device that I am talking about. I'm not sure what it is.
dasbulliwagen
Could be an accumulator. Racers use them for pressurized oil in their system on startup to reduce bearing wear. Though pics would be very helpful to verify what it is.
87Chief
This is what the hose from the 'T' fitting goes to... Can't really see, but this is up close, And this is where the other hose leads to... Is it amsoil?
Eagle
Got it installed but now it reads way passed 80... 180 degrees from when engine is shut off You probably got the one for a vehicle with idiot lights rather than the one for gauges.
87Chief
So I should look up like a Cherokee on rockauto and get one or the gauges?
zagscrawler
Maybe when you ask for the new one make sure you say sending unit instead of oil switch. If they ask what year make model kinda thing, find someone with same year truck that has oil gauge from the factory and tell the computer jockey at the counter thats what you have. The oil switch does just like it sounds, closes contacts or opens them like a switch (for the idiot light style), but the oil sender is more of a reostat that transmits voltage or grounding resistance depending on the position of the internals in the sender (via various presures) kinda like a fuel sender. If your gauge pegs when you turn your key you most likely have a switch installed instead of a sender.
zagscrawler
Oh and that remote thingy could be a few things. Maybe a water seperater or an extra oil filter.... My dad runs remote oil filters with built in water seperators that look similar to that.
87Chief
I looked on rockauto for a sender, but they didn't have one.. Anyone know where I could get one it's a 87 jeep comanche 2.5L.. It goes all the way to the right (flat line) when I crank the car up and it stays in that position. And I emailed my grandfather about the filter and it is the amsoil system. I'm just not sure how to remove it.. lol P.S. thanks for everyone's help so far!
