which d/30?

Recommended Posts

ok so ive got a 90 comanche with the vac disconnect d/30 and an 89 cherokee with the non vac disconnect d/30. one of these is goin on a two wheel drive comanche once i get the tcase in. which ones is better?

id like to keep both but i need all vehicles to roll inorder to have th jy take them away. I'm thinkin the cherokee axle is better just because theres less stuff to break but i may be wrong. any opinions?

The NON disco is a margoinally stronger case and the one I would choose. The disco does have its atributes as well.

You only need to find a post 96 D30 and swap in those shafts to get 760 joints for the strongest D30 the factory had to offer!!!

well after a fair bit of research id choose the vac disco one if there werent hard core rock crawling plans. reason: no one likes them so parts are everywhere, the vacume can be replaced by the allways reliable cable, it can be lincoln locked and still drove on the street like ya didnt have a locker due to the disconect.

now also consider that if your gonna hard core rock crawl then the front steering on street won't be of much concern since it probly won't see much or anny street driving at all. so the extra strength of non disco axles is the better choice.

Another argument in favor of the disco axle is the right side control arm mounts. On the non-disco, the UCA mounts to a sheet metal bracket that's welded to the axle tube. Fine for street use, but lots of heavy off-road use can twist that bracket into a pretzel. The right side UCA on the disco axle mounts to an ear that's part of the cast disconnect housing. It's MUCH stronger.

mine has a d44, and 3.54 gears. i don't know what i should do in the up-coming year. id like to keep the disco axle because i like the idea of a lincoln locker to save money on lockers, but i want a strong axle capable of 35's. i am a VERY light driver and never spin the tires, so I'm hoping that with upgraded joints i will be all set.

is there anyway to get the 760x joints into a disco axle, and retain the disco part of it?

i read the link that pete posted, and I'm a little confused about what he reaplaced.

so if i went with the vac disco id probably put on the posi lock just to be safe. now if i was to lincoln lock the front end it wouldnt make a difference on the road because of the disconnect. but i will lose the option of being in 4wd and having an open front end, right?

35" tires can break parts in Dana 44s, let alone Dana 30s. Nothing is indestructible. 35 inches is a lot of tire and the Dana 30 is a small axle, but if you get shafts that run 297 or 760 'joints and leave the front open it should be fine. Of course, longevity is also dependent on the tires you get, the terrain you travel, and how much you like the skinny pedal. If you want to run big tires, expect to pay for it somewhere.

haha, thats the one i prolly wouldve chosen too man.

but i do have one question to jack this thread.. since the topic is over and its still about vacuum d/30s.

is there anything special that has to be done in order to pull the disconnect shaft in a disco-30? or do you just yank the shaft exactly how you yank the shaft on the short side?

if the question isnt clear let me know ill try to ask it better.

So are oyu asking how to pull the axle shafts out of the case. If so you have to remove the disco controls on the axle and then take you fingers and slide the center piece out through the tube after the outer shgaft is gone of course and the short side is the same as removing the outer shaft on the long side. Hope this helps.

so i undo all the vacuum goodies, and pull the vacuum cover off the axle, then do al the hub-stuf and pull the axle shaft, then slide the sleeve thingy out the same way as the axleshaft? or out the disconnect housing? then the inner axle stays? or does it pull out too?

I'm just changin u-joints. so do i need to pull the innermost shaft in order to run just the stub-shaft? cuase i can't change ujoints myself. the shop we took the left side to spent the better part of an hour getting the b*@$£ out. (origional spicer joints 17yo)
