Valve cover gasket

Got tired of the '94 ZJ puking a half qt of 10-30 all over the plug wires every time I went to town so this afternoon I pulled the valve cover. Checked with Auto Zone on price, availability of a new VC gasket. Had a Victor for $5.49, cork rubber, guaranteed for 2 years. Fel Pro for $5.99,cork, guaranteed for a year. Another Fel Pro for $39.99 permadry, guaranteed for 1 year. What in heck can make a $34 difference in price? I got a couple tubes of that there red stuff. What the heck do I need a gasket for? :dunno:

The expensive one is like the rubber gaskets for the oil pan... require no RTV, and you can re-use them if you remove the VC.

I'd stay far away from the cork, unless you want to redo it in a couple months.

i've always found felpro rubber gaskets...

The $34 difference is your valve cover gasket won't leak within a couple months after installation.

You can get it cheaper with a kit .... Felpro Gasket kit set for my 86 MJ 4cyl was $40 at the most, I think it was actually $36, but it came with 30 million gaskets.

Check on the 4.0, which is the motor I'm assuming you have. Eh, just checked .... its a little pricey, but probably beneficial in the long run.

as a mechanic, i hate cork and love the permadry gaskets. i've never had a problem with a properly installed permadry, but have seen many cork gaskets fail shortly after proper install. they also come back apart clean without lots of scraping and prep work before putting it back together, and are reusable as mentioned.
