JCole
I have found an axel and I'm pretty sure it's a dana 44. I pulled the axel tag off. Can someone decode it for me? 4.11 605315-3d 8953004514 Thanks guys this is in a cherokee and both front and rear are there. If it is a 44 it will go nicely in my MJ
Automan2164
Tag says its a 4.10 geared D35, off of an '86 Cherokee / Wagoneer 8953004514 '86 Cherokee & Wagoneer 35 4.11 NL Got a picture of it? Its pretty hard to confuse a D35 and a D44. Rob L.
JCole
No I don't. I has a square screw in plug in the diff cover. Axels have retaining plates. Thought I was on to something. :dunno: :dunno: :dunno: :dunno: :dunno:
JCole
Still it would be a hell of a sight better than my ax15 with 3.07s right?
Automan2164
Gearing would be better, don't know if it would be worth it to spend all the work putting the XJ axle in to an MJ without being an upgrade. D44: D35: Rob L.
tbrand
Still it would be a hell of a sight better than my ax15 with 3.07s right? AX-15 is your transmission, which is the better 5-speed to find behind a 4.0L motor.
JCole
It's def. a dana 44 I wonder why the tag says d35? :dunno:
Automan2164
Maybe and thats a big maybe The previous owner swapped axles, and put the D35 tag on the D44, but I doubt it. Sorry to say it, but I am 99.99% sure that its going to be a D35. I would need a pic to be persuaded otherwise. Rob L.
JCole
I understand your position completely. I am going for pics tomorrow. Man I hope I'm right the guy wants a song for it and the front end.
HOrnbrod
The Dana book agrees: 605315-3 = JEEP Model 35 REAR 1985.5 - XJ UTILITY STD 4.
Automan2164
IF it ends up being a 44, I wouldn't take the incorrect tag as anything. Pull the cover and check the stamping on the gears to verify the ratio. Rob L.

JCole
I'm going for pics now. It sounds like I'm wrong, but 2 dana 44s for 75 bucks, I gotta make sure
Automan2164
2 D44's!? If he's telling you that... He's and idiot, and your crazy for listening to him. No XJ/MJ ever came with a D44 front. Now 100% its a D35. Sorry man. Have to go with the trend of info here. Rob L.

JCole
No worries should i still pick them up for the money? You know just for the gear swap. With a 31 tire and my ax15 and the 4.10's what would my cruising rpms be @ 70? What would they be with all of the above, but with 3.07's? Thanks guys. btm24
Did you say that it has matching dana 30 and 35 axles with 4:10 gears?!? Are you looking to convert your truck to 4x4 or is it already 4x4? I know that a dana 30 geared with 4:10 gears is VERY VERY hard to find. So if you looking to up grade your gears and axles and or converting 4x4 you should still pick it up. even both for 75 bucks you should be able to get like 25 bucks from the 35 at the scrap yard. This way you can get a bit back and when you do go and get a 44 or other upgraded axle, you can either look in getting brand new gears or trying to find one with 4:10. GREAT find if it is 4:10 but please make sure that you count the teeth and find out what your getting. Brandon

Or ANY later TJ 4 cylinder with any transmission. Really not that uncommon.
btm24
Well it was hard to find for me any ways and I can only speak from personal experience. Brandon
shelbyluvv
4:10s are easy to find. 4:56s on the other hand are a real PIA to find. I have only ever found 2 sets. One set is currently in my MJ and I sold the set for about a 500% profit!

JCole
No my truck is already a 4x4, but it has craptastic 3.07s  It is the front and rear out of a 86 cherokee wagoneer. They are 4.10s in both the front and rear. I remember someone on here saying that NO DANA 35 ever had a screw in fill plug on the cover. That is why I was confused. The cover looks somewhat different from a normal 35 cover to me as well. The outter edge of the cover looks okay, but the inner part seems beefier? :dunno: I worked out the difference in rpm as well for both the 3.07s and 4.10s. 4.10s would be like 2450 rpms @ 70. vs 1860 rpms @70 for the 3.07s. What would you guys do? Thanks
