The "Tysver" Project

Recommended Posts

Hello guys I'm new to this forum but i wanted to go ahead and start a build thread of my Manche!

tid-bit-o-history:

I inherited the truck that belonged to my grandpa Wayne Tysver who has recently passed. I had no clue what it was but i knew it was a jeep so i had to get it. Expecting a J10 I found this little gem!

Its an 88 shortbox with a 5sp! No 4wd tho! :fs2:

well any way the body is in decent shap no major dings or cancer.... that i noticed except for the roof ( you can see it in the prev pic) and the front fender. i don't know who did it, my grandpa was an interesting fellow when it came to fixing things, but there is like a crap ton of bondo to patch a hole in the roof. it started to peel up and the inside of the truck is just soaking wet and is a mold city galore!!!!!.

so the first thing to do is get it home get it running and tear the interior out and replace the seat carpet and steering column to make it atleast driveable. Here are some more photos

(yes that is my yota in the background.... sry jeep guys i don't want to discriminate in any way! haha)

I plan on doing a 2wd to 4wd conversion with a donor tcase and axle out of a cherokee as soon as the budget allows it. in the end i want to build a decent wheeler running atleast 33"... but who knows ill probably be going bigger in the future.

If you guys feel like joining me in my adventure in building this baby feel free to check it out every once and a while. but you know how it goes... projects can only be fininshed with time and money... neither of which i have in surplus!

welcome to the Comanche Club.I like your new project, kind of an unusual color, and looks pretty solid. You might try bringing the color back a little by rubbing it out with GoJo with pumice. That way if you want to paint anything you won't have to worry about wax getting in your way. keep us posted. Mark

SHE IS BACK TO LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!

I got the truck down to my parents house yesterday evening and tried starting her. It turned over like a champ but wouldnt start! :headpop:

so this mornin i got up and made it a goal to get her going... i did anything and everything to get her to start cleaned contacts checked plugs tested coil and all fuses but nothing!

then i decided to use the search function that everyone forgets about and found a lot of "won't start" threads with a lot of direction torwards the cps... then i checked... and guess what i found! burnt wires leading to a little bit of joy tucked in the top of the bell housing... the wires were burnt and broken off the sensor! Changed it and it started right up!

she runs beautifully (besides a small whine from the ac pump). now i just have to fix all the little electrical problems like the dash lights and the fact that I'm using a toggel switch for my windsheild wipers.

i also picked up some buckets out of a two door xj and the center console. surprisingly enough its the exact same color scheme as the truck which is sweet.

here she sits after a fresh bath!

Well today i made out with a deal of the century IMOP. I found a guy locally selling an aw4 and 231 for $100!

come to find out he had just bought a brand new torque converter for it just before he wrecked his xj!

came out a 90 4L xj and only has 153,000 on it.

One step closer to my 4wd swap! :jump:

Well it made the two hour drive from my parents house up north to my place which is awesome. i guess you never realize how reliable jeeps are till you own one.

well i started by pulling out the carpet and come to find out i still got original paint on my floorboards!

there wes about a 1/4" of water on the passenger side after i pulled the matt up. so gotta find that leak.

Ill post some more photos soon of the interior rebuild progress.

ok so ive got some stuff done but not much. School has been pretty hectic especially with building our SAE baja car and all..

things ive accomplished:

finished tearing out most of the interior

cleaned up the firwall ground, dash ground, and rear tailight ground

installed new battery ground wire (was burnt and missing insulation)

installed new optima red top battery

welded new brackets to my bucket seats

bought SYE kit as well as the 2 low kit

installed new park brake assembly

here is the driver side bucket

and the passenger side assembly without seat

i prettty much followed mfpdm's write up on how to do the bracket conversion. (thanks for that) but instead of using bolts to attach them i just tig welded them straight in.

i still can't figure out why my dash lights and my tailights won't work. i cleaned the grounds that i mentioned before and still no improvement. i was planning on doing the SYE and 2 low conversion on my T-case and installing my AW4 with the 8.8 rear but dosent sound like i can get around to it till after the summer. i got a call from superior crankshaft this morning and sounds like i will be scoring an internship there in orange county. its sweet but that means now work will be getting done on the manche :(

i also have yet to find the leak in the manche. i pulled the trim off of the windsheild and from what i can tell the rubber is good and didnt find any bad areas. i also pulled the cowl cover off to see if i could find anything there but still nothing. :dunno:

i plan on driving the truck around for a while to find the leak via the powder trick but i have to figure out the electrical issues first. you guys have any ideas?

well hopefully things will keep moving forward.

the tails and dash could be as simple as the fuse. it likes to pop. as for the leak check out your firewall for open holes or anything like that but yes the powder trick is awsome. good work man, keep it up or at least make someone else while your gone!

hey my door seals were leaking and the water went down the kick panel, made it look like the windshield was leaking, also there were a few small screw holes behind the kick panel that would let some water in when i drove in a heavy rain. As for the door make sure they shut flush with the body, my hinges are worn so they didnt well. I tweaked the door with my hand up top and a foot at the bottom, just do it slightly and re check the door fit. A good way to check to see if the seal is tight, put a piece of paper in the door jam and shut the door, it should hold the paper firm. oh and here is my truck in a dark metallic brown.

Alright figured out the issue! Bad headlight switch! Replaced the headlight switch and everything started working again! I still have the turn indicators turn on with the head lights but thats no big deal. Atleast its not illegal to drive the comanche in the dark anymore haha

I drove it around and i have to admit i love the stick in this baby... makes me sad that I'm going to be swapping it out. I also intstalled a fuel cut off switch in it as my only mode of antitheft.

I am mostly just excited that I finally get to drive her around for a while! comanche.gif

Well its been a long time since i posted on here. at the end of the school year things got pretty hectic and had absolutely no time to work on the truck. Now I'm back home staying with the parents for the summer cause i got an internship close to their place. (I already can't wait to get back out!)

Well since my last posting ive changed my plans for the manche. I was gonna axle and tranny swap to make it a wheeler but now I'm just gonna fix it up and turn it into a cruiser. (It needs a lot of work)

Today i tore the dash out for the heator core change. Unfortunately i broke the vacuum control valve in the process so ill have to go find one in the scrap yard. I'm also having trouble deciding whether or not i want to go throught the process of converting the ac to R134a since I'm in the neighborhood.

Thats my up date. comanche.gif Jeep on
