Locker or no locker?

Recommended Posts

I'm debating on whether or not to put a locker in my rear axle. Right now I'm running a 2.8 V6 with and AMC20 rear with 4.10 gearing running 31x10.5's.

I'm planning on doing a drive train swap for a better engine and to get 4wd, but I'm waiting till I can afford a donor cherokee.

for the time being I've been tossing around the idea of putting a locker in the rear?

any suggestions?

ive found 2 chrysler 8.25 29 splines for $100 each and i put disk brakes from a zj on them for $40 from wreckin yard. lookin at gettin an aussie locker and from the webstite their $300 but out of stock. overall fairly innexpensive and will put up to my abuse with 33s

Save it and if your replacing axles find a donor with a posi rear :dunno:

Why would he replace an AMC 20 that has 4.10 gears? It's a good ratio, and the AMC 20 is a brute. In many ways it's a better axle than a Dana 44 -- but it has worse ground clearance.

I think the OP's question was "Locker or no locker?" in his existing 4.10 geared AMC20? Not replacing it. :D

That was the original question. Dirt eater brought up replacing the entire axle -- which IMHO would not be a good move.

installing a limited slip could cost 800 or more and needs to be done by a pro. installing a "lunchbox" locker should cost under 300 and you can do it yourself.

Do you have a means of safely extracting your truck from the mud that doesn't rip parts of your truck off in the process? Don't do a mod that'll get you even deeper into trouble until you have a safe means to get yourself back out of trouble. for example, hooks and brackets up front, hitch in the back.

I'm assuming they would already know, but fyi any front bumper that is to be used for extraction MUST have long support runners that go back along the frame and use extra bolts. Stock bumpers only bolt to the very front of the sheetmetal and were only designed for absorbing a crash.
