bottomline89
This is my first truck, i bought it myself from money i got from mowing and stuff like that. i was 13 when i bought it and I'm 15 now. i got it off one of my dads friends. it sat it a field for 5 years and before that was just a daily driver and before that was a pasture truck that never left the land. NO RUST and the engine still doesnt smoke with 206,XXX miles on the original motor. when i got it, it had a bad clutch, radiator and tires.... it has manual windows and they'd only go down part of the way and wouldnt go back up so i took the door panel off, took a pair of vice grips and "unwound" or streched the spring out and the passenger snapped but the driver's side works great now i put a new radiator, new clutch master cylinder, new resivor tank, new valve cover gasket, new vacuum lines, new rear tires (mud and snow 235, 17, r15), straighten steering and major tune up (distributor, wires, plugs, oil, air filter ect.) this is my last, and most major project was putting a new intake/exhaust manifold gasket which was the first one i majorly took pictures of so here they are from start to finish

bottomline89
I'm not sure what I'm going to do with the truck as of right now.. its only 2wd and i'd love for it to be a 4x4, that also kinda defeats the purpose of lifting and things along that line. ya, mowing paid for 90% of this project, its also successfully sucked those funds dry (parents don't hold my money if you havent guess) but i am getting a job this summer.. i've read a lot into converting it into a 4x4, new tranny (or rod end.. whatever it is), transfer case, front axle, front driveshaft, some have even said new rear driveshaft.. now i'd be MORE THAN HAPPY to put the work into it, i love working on this truck, money's the problem as of right now.. bottomline89
little update. I'm definitely swapping out for a 4x4 drivetrain, found an 88 cherokee. i was in the mj tech section and someone told me my truck wasnt a base model so i ran the VIN and it came up as a pioneer  probably won't have another update until summer starts and i get the time to work on it again
cody4359
i forget when, but like 92-93 ( i think) the axles got rid of that problematic CAD system and also got a little stronger ujoints. in my 88 xj a branch took the vaccum line off when i was out playing, then another time the diaphram filled up with mud, both leaving me in 2wd. there is a cable engagment kit you can buy but its around $200 and is somtimes a pain to get it set just right. also some lock the 4x4 in place but if its a daily driver id assume thats a no-go

bottomline89
but even if the axle is always locked, and transfer case isn't, will that effect mileage Are there any differences in the mounting of the 92 into my truck?
bottomline89
finally got a couple odd jobs for some cash, looking into bushwacker fenders.. i probably won't swap the drive train until i get a permanent job, hopefully won't be that long. Sadly i have nothing to update on my truck, i'm keeping my addiction going though, i swapped the radiator in a neighborhood girl's car.. (her mom loves me now).. and currently giving a major tune up and new water pump in a buddy's 96 dodge dakota 4x4, he has a NP231 and i keep telling him i'm going to steal it :wrench: P.S. if anyone can answer my question above, i'd appreciate it, Thanks for checking out my build page
comanche12
welcome to club and jeep madness! but even if the axle is always locked, and transfer case isn't, will that effect mileage Are there any differences in the mounting of the 92 into my truck? not really to effect the mileage. just little as unnoticeable? mounting of what? Comanche County
but even if the axle is always locked, and transfer case isn't, will that effect mileage Are there any differences in the mounting of the 92 into my truck? No, its unnoticeable. Its why Jeep dumped the CAD. Good truck and good work buddy!
bottomline89
mounting of what? of the suspension
Comanche County
Everything, transmission, TC, front D30, front driveshaft, from the donor XJ "should" bolt right in - except the rear drive shaft. Little safety reminder, get some quality 6 ton jack stands to support the truck when you're crawling underneath it. Also have some sort of secondary support. bottomline89
I'm long over due for an update on this truck... Latest projects: -made custom design in headliner to keep it up (staple gun) :rotfl2: -new rear brake line. right side. old line broke in half -new passenger door window regulator -new positive battery cable.. (starting to relate to whoever said "inconsistent electrical problems") HERE'S MY QUESTION -new power steering pump pulley after the last one snapped and my fan cut my belt. now it sqeaks! i've put a new water pump in, new idler pulley, checked all the bearings twice and i went with the higher quality serpentine belt the only thing out of the ordinary is that the belt rides further back on the fan pulley, (also an idler pulley), and further forward on the water pump (towards the rad) I can also get it to stop by spraying it with belt conditioner but it comes back by the end of the day. ANY SUGGESTIONS? I'm gonna post this in the mj tech section so where ever you feel like answering is fine with me
Comanche County
Your new belt is probably ruined by the conditioner. That stuff is a rip off and will make the squeal worse . Remove the belt (keep it as a spare in the bed of the truck or under the seats somewhere), visually check for pulley alignment from the side, see if there's a bent bracket or other cause to the misaligned pulleys. Clean every inch of pulley surface with brake or carb cleaner and wipe all pulleys very well. Install a new belt and don't let any fluids touch it. There are some old timers tricks that may work....holding a bar of soap on the belt while its running, same thing with a wire brush, none of that worked for me. The only thing that took care of my squealing belt was what I described above. Go with the Goodyear Gatorback belt, worth the $85 and comes with a lifetime warranty for free replacement. I've cleaned everything and had two new belts in a row squeal right from the store. Also ensure you've got the belt tight enough. Should have less than an inch of play when you press down on it. There's also a special tool that checks belt tension to see if you're in spec. I believe its fairly inexpensive.

dave92cherokee
Looking good, just keep plugging away at it and you'll get there. Not sure if you ever fixed your belt issue but if not i would recommend getting a mech's stethoscope, it will help you pinpoint noises in the future as well( and there will be many strange noises). bottomline89
well Layla started to act up a couple weeks ago. she would just die as i was driving, she was lacking power so i checked everything and there was water in the oil.. so here we go.. so i broke out the shop-vac and putty knife and went to work. i rigged up a straw and duct tape to get down around the lifters. I spend a whole day and a half of the build just cleaning. time to go back together. got the head torqued down and the rockers back on.... didn't get a pic of the cleaned block and pistons, i was on a roll and just kept moving nice and clean with a new thermostat housing because i broke the old pot metal one.. and today i just got done putting in a new heater core.. :headpop: only if we all had the dash of a cj..
