btm24
Dose any body have a wright up on how to put the 8.8 in an mj? Also is the bolt pattern the same? Thanks Brandon
comanche13
you just need to weld on new spring perches and maybe a pair of spidertrax wheel spacers on it and your good to go. Also the E-brake needs some attention but here is a write up on the E-brake. http://iclickoffroad.com/webwheeling/in ... pic=1617.
dasbulliwagen
Bolt pattern is the same, and the wheel spacers (spidertrax) are not really necessary. Like the former poster said, new spring perches will need to be welded on in the proper location, and the park brake cables need to be modified, and youll need to find the correct size pinion to hook up the Mj rear driveshaft to it, but from what Ive read, thats no big deal, I think one from a Crown vic or a Gr. Marquis is supposed to be the right size, but would have to be confirmed, they also had the 8.8, but are the wrong width. Youll need to do away with the load sensing valve too and maybe install a ZJ or WJ proportioning valve to go with the rear disc brakes. Not a bad job, just need to do your research. Good luck. comanche13
I just suggest the wheel spacers because it is a bit smaller width wise.
Pete M
plus the wheel spacers will balance out the amount of tire that sticks out (making it match the front tires).
bighause
I did this a few months ago and it was pretty easy, i added wheel spacers for cosmetic reasons but it worked fine without them. I didn't change any thing with my master cylinder or load sensing valve and the brakes work well. Take the time to clean up and paint the axle before you put it in and take it to a welding shop if you don't have a welder like me. Cost me $50 to weld on the spring and shock mounts. Pete M
don't forget, it must be from an Explorer or Mountaineer. and pay extra attention to the ratio and have a plan for matching the front axle. try hard to get the metric bolts that hold the u-joint adapter to the flange. if you can't, they are available at your ford dealer. don't even try something available at a hardware store. they aren't strong enough. you'll need U-bolts too. and I think u-bolt plates from the explorer are necessary. can't remember if the MJ plate can be reused or not since the 8.8 has a larger diameter. you'll also need a plan for shock mounts. some good pointers--> http://www.jedi.com/obiwan/jeep/ford88.html

Ziegler bolt and nut house (local company) and Fastenall (international chain) also have them and are a bit more affordable.
mnkyboy
How big of tires do you plan to run,if you don't want huge tires I would rather have the 99 8.25 and d30. A 99 8.25 should be about as strong as that 8.8 and its the right width, and the d30 is gonna be a lot stronger then the d30 you looking to buy. Only thing is the 3.55s which isn't an issue if you don't run huge tires.

Ive all ready looked up as all of this and from what i have learned this far into it i am getting a 4.5" rough country lift will run 31" All terrain's till i have the $ to up grade to 33" bfg mud terrain's. Also I will lock up the rear with a auto locker and run 4:10 gears. As far as i know this is what I am looking for and not the 8.25 with 3:55 gears. Thanks for the idea tho Brandon
