I would buy it, but I'd try to get it as cheap as possible of course. SX4s hard to find, rarer than MJs by far (IMO). I'm not an expert on them at all, but recently I did a little reading about them. Check out amceaglenest.com.

These are the original compact 4 wheel drive car and the 4x4 system was ahead of anything else at the time. Subarus are knock offs of Eagles (sorry Subaru guys). Highly capable and with the 4.2 you'd be getting a great engine. Plenty of aftermarket parts.

one of my customers has one... my wife's first car was an sx4 years ago... I found one here in the back of a guys house but its rotted apart..

I have been on the hunt for one for a long time. hard to find.

they have a lot incomone with the jeep mjs nad xjs but a lot differeance as well...

they run a d30 front and a d35 drear end. coils up front same as the xj,mj's

the engine is very much the same as the 4.2 in the yj.. the oil pan is different as they were making space so the car was not to far off the ground.

they have lots of power..

leaf springs in the rear.

as stated way ahead of the time in the 4x4 department.

I hope that this helps

go buy it or I may be planing a trip... thats a great looking car..

In 1980 I bought a brand new two wheel drive version off the show room floor. It was called a Spirit. I loved that car. Ended up having to sell it in 1985/86. In recent years I've been looking for another one except with the AMX package. Talk about hard to find. I'll be lucky to find a regular Spirit.

Anyway, I'd buy tha thing or try to find another one like it if for no other reason because they are getting very rare. Every now and then I see the 4 door station wagon model but very seldom do you see the 2 doors. The Eagle was built from 1979-1987 and the Spirit was built from 1979-1983

Good luck.

recommended forums for AMC eagle inquiries, previously suggested, but you will not find more of a wealth of knowledge of these cars anywhere else.

I'm registered there as "landlubber" also, was set on getting an eagle before I found comanches. Still have a AMC concord (very similar to eagles) in the equipment yard. will get one eventually, I think they are awesome.

SX/4s are quite rare, the rarest being the Eagle Kammback, looking somewhat similar to the Gremlin.

4.0L engine swaps have been done before, there is a quite in depth thread about it here:
