Jeep XJs came in several standard gearing ratios:

3.07:1, manual transmission, I6 engine.

3.54:1, automatic transmission, I6 engine with Dana 44 rear differential.

3.54:1, manual transmission, I4 diesel engine with Dana 35 rear differential.

3.55:1, automatic transmission, I6, V6 engines; manual transmission, I4 engine.

3.73:1, automatic transmission, I6, Tow Package, UpCountry Package.

4.10:1, manual transmission, V6; automatic transmission, I4 engine.

4.56:1, automatic transmission, I4, offroad or tow package.

rules of thumb for 87-92 MJs

4.0 + auto = 3.55

4.0 + stick = 3.07

2.5 + auto = 4.56

2.5 + 4spd stick = 3.55

2.5 + 5spd stick = 4.10

uber rare fuel economy package = 3.31s

rules of thumb for 86 MJs

metric ton = 4.10s

beyond that, ya really gotta check to know for sure.

no known knowledge about the V6 2.8l gears??

My 4X4 5spd 2.8 has 4:10's. Looks like a D35 in the back to me.

Oh, btw, I am swapping the oil tomorrow, should I get a gasket from the Jeep dealer or use the goopy stuff?

.

does this apply to xjs to? ive got the rear end out of a xj that had a carbed 2.5 with an auto tranny and 4wd. wiould it have 4.56's?

might, but it'll probably be a d35 so I wouldn't run it.

FYI - the 20 rear axle is an AMC 20 not a D20. A D20 is a nifty twin-stickable gear driven transfer case, as I recall.
