wyk
Hey all. I got tired of seeing rust and metal, and decided to repaint the Comanche. I bought what was on sale at Home Depot(Rustoleum Smoke Gray), sanded and spot primered what was left on the truck, and then hit it with about 4 coats of the stuff. Now it looks like a very nice, smooth primer job..er... It took 18 hours of work on and off over 4 days, it needs one more polish maybe and then I am gonna clear coat it with all the emblems on and then wax it. If I had to do it over again, I woulda used a roller instead of cans. The cost was about $60 all in all start to finish. This is the progression reel:

Sir Sam
is it me or does it look like primer?
Pete M
I can dig the primer look. :D (long as it's not actual primer of course) wyk, have you started a project thread yet?
87Warrior
I think after a good polish and good clear coat, the primeresque appearance will be diminished. Give it that gloss effect.
wyk
I can dig the primer look. :D (long as it's not actual primer of course) wyk, have you started a project thread yet? Nah. No need to. I am NOT gonna endorse using spray cans! ;) Mine only came out halfway decent because I have some experience painting, and am patient. If yer gonna DIY - use a roller or a HVLP gun. Using a spray can is just brutal - that was 16 cans and ~4-5 passes overall. I just got done wet sanding it. I am considering changing the color now, or just waxing it until I get the nerve to change the color ;) If it wasn't 100* outside, it would be easier to decide to repaint it. As it is, even though I have been painting and working on it from 7-11AM, it is still brutal. At least the finish is even now. It is darker in person than it appears in the pics, tho. I'll wax her and put up some more images tomorrow maybe. Wish I hadn't put those badges on now... Well, the good news is if I do repaint it, that thing is never gonna lose it's paint ever again. As it is it has the original primer on most of it, some original paint, a couple of layers of some dupont paint, and now a few layers of rustoleum. I am also gonna repaint that stupid Comanche badge - I thot it would come out much more tame. That thing is blazing yellow. WYK
beepbeepmyredjeep
For those who have done it or seen it, how well does a roller paint job work out on a Comanche? I've got a lot of experience painting with brush and roller from my construction days. I considered doing it, but I wasn't sure how well it would look? If it looks decent, I might do that instead of trying to use spray paint, since I don't have sprayer equipment.
Pete M
did you use one of these?
wyk
did you use one of these? Damn right, I did. I also went out in 100* weather and used 'Super Hard" Turtle Wax. Even though I used water with it, it was a HUGE pain to wax off. Hai yah! I am parked in the shade for now, but I took a pic anyways. I'll have an image in sunlight in an hour or two. I also paintd the lettering of the "COMANCHE" badge Gray to match the truck: Once that wax comes off, I think I am gonna roller paint it flat beige or tan. wyk
OK, here it is buffed, polished, and waxed. It's not a mirror shine, but at least it doesn't look like a spray can job.
shawn
turned out really good! --- gotta wonder what about the air-dam though?

But, it is the easiest way to paint; quick and easy, and there is no over spray.
