Here's what you do, get a 97+ XJ, like this one which sold for $900 today:

That one would have been perfect. Cut off the rear of the body, and make it into a 4 door, seems like you got the perfect donor to reuse the rear end of the cab and the nicer newer 97+ interior and front of the vehicle.

Heck even if you got something that was lightly wrecked in the front you have all your good front end parts still to fix it.

Very depressing considering I remember how much work you put into it just getting that 92 from the Sacramento tow yard to Southern California. Considering all the heart and soul you put into her why not keep her? With the damage on the interior why not just go for the 97+ interior swap at your own leisure? I am very sorry for your loss and best of luck in whatever your decision is about her.

Even from the get go I was already pretty much convinced I was going to keep it and do something with it. The roof is pretty gnarly, sunk down a good 3 inches . The doors drag on the top of the roof when you open them. I thought about doing what Sir Sam suggested, very very tempting so it's down to that or cut the back of the cab off and adding a second row of seats. One way or another it has to have atleast 4 seats. I just can't justify having a 2 seater truck when I want to be able to go out wheeling with the family.

I haven't read through all the posts, but this is a sad thing for sure. :( From the looks of it, it was built with care. What I'm interested is what do you think caused the wire fire? They are always caused by a dead short somewhere with no fuse/link protection that generated enough amp flow to ground, created heat, then ignited insulation or oil deposits at the hot spot. Any idea of the cause in hindsite?

I've been racking my brain trying to figure out what caused the fire since it happened. The overdrive switch on the dash was the only aftermarket bit of wiring on the inside of the truck. It did even have true power running through it. It was a ground control switch. The only other thing I can think of is that the A/C has never worked on the truck since I bought it two years ago and it seemed like an electrical issue. The control never told the compressor to turn on when it was in the right position. I may be misunderstanding how the A/C system works on those things though. I really just don't know. It really bothers me that I can't figure out why.

Maybe you meant did not? :D Understand why it others you as to he cause of the wire fire occurred - it would bug me too. Sounds like the insulation on a B+ mains cable was skinned to ground to get hot enough to ignite something, unless a fuel leak was involved. Ah well, when you get digging into it, it might be obvious. Let us know the plan.

hornbrod - Good catch! I read it over 3 times any didn't catch that.

All I know is that it started somewhere need the middle of the dash. Well I should say I first saw flames near the middle of the dash basically right next to my right shin when it's on the accelerator pedal.

I will definitely pass along what I find out as I dig through it.

One of the higher amp accessories in the dash would be the fan motor, but like has been said it has a fuse. If you find the cause please let us know, I remember my the fan blower switch would get super hot in the 99+ TJ's melting the switch. With so much damage to your interior if the fan switch blower was the problem it will be difficult to prove.

Was the blower on?

My bet is the blower control switch, it's known for going up in smoke but usually doesn't cause that kind of havoc, they're more of a whimper than a bang generally.

On a 20 year old truck it doesn't even take something that could blow a fuse really, a few sparks landing in a very dried out piece of sound dampening jute padding or something and it's all over.

Comanche County - They are Boze wheels. I got them from a guy who had them on his ranger. Originally they were a very blingy Chrome but the previous owner had scuffed them up and painted them black. I didn't like the black so I painted the silver. Not bad for getting 4 nearly perfect wheels and 1 with a ding (that I fixed) on the edge for $200!

kastein - No, the blower wasn't on. Had 2/60 air going! I guess it's more 2.5/60 air with the back slider open...

Agreed I remember this article from the October 2007 issue of JP.
