No Shift While Motor is Running Help Please

So I just installed my news Sachs clutch kit on my BA 10/5 in my 88 comanche. When I start the vehicle in Neutral I cannot shift into ANY, i mean ANY gear, its like it it locked out.

 

If I put the transmission into gear and start the vehicle with the clutch in I can release the clutch and the vehicle moves. Its a little rough taking it out of gear once I turn the truck off.

 

I bled the clutch a million times and it has great release but my now KNOWN GOOD transmission won't shift into gear with the motor running.

 

 

P.S.

 

I fixed my exhaust manifold to downpipe problem with an exhaust clamp, 2 inch, but I had to cut some pipe before the cat that I haven't fixed, this results in an idle of 2,000 RPM consistantly.

 

The idle shouldn't have an effect on the shifting, its a manual transmission with a new clutch.

If you can't shift while the engine is running, then you DON'T have great release. It may feel like you have good peddle, but you obviously don't have release.

 

Are you certain you didn't put the disc in with the wrong side facing the flywheel?

Okay, I didn't bleed it more yet, wife got me to cut the grass instead, however I snuck another quick diagnostic. With the truck on level ground, break off I can push in the clutch pedal and attempt to force the truck into gear, when I do, it looks like it SLLLLOOOOWLY rolls forward. Rolls better in second gear.

Not only have I seen clutch plates put in backwards, I have also seen nice, shiny, new pressure plates and throwout bearings go bad in less than 500 miles. Think your going to have to resign yourself to the fact that you may have to remove the transmission for a up close visual inspection.

So the wife and I bled the slave through a whole bottle of fluid and it doesn't seem to be getting us anywhere, I am going to try filling the tranny with fluid to see if that helps. I just don't understand how this is happening. The clutch disc says right on it, this side towards flywheel (Actually says, FLYWHEEL SIDE) and there is a detent that goes into the pressure plate, the whole kit and kaboodle is brand new.

 

Guess I know what I am doing tomorrow. Has anybody ever successfully remvoved the tranny with the Cross member still on???

Couple more questions:

 

1) If it's a BA 10/5, it has an internal slave. The slave comes with a band to keep it compressed, and you're supposed to leave that band in place while you bleed it. Did you have the band in place when you bed it?

 

2) As has been discussed in other threads, you're not supposed to resurface the flywheel. Did you by any chance have the flywheel resurfaced?

Yes, bands were in place and no I did not resurface the flywheel, I did however clean it with brake cleaner.

 

I knew the scale of work involved going into the repair so I was extra careful with all dealings in that matter of installing the new clutch.

 

I do believe that my master cylinder might be on the fritz. Picture this:

 

The seal on the resevoir cap is old and coroded and gone, the thing looks like crap and when wifey is bleeding the system I get different strengths of squirt each time coming out of the bleeder. Also it was $#!& easy to bend the splines on the old pressure plate so I wonder if my master doesn't have the cohanas to operate the new equipment. Either way a new one is on the way and I will be installing it before I rip that tranny off again. Any body else agreed with my diagnosis?

 

In the mean time, I am fabbing up some tube doors. Gotta love my little $#!&box welder :D LOL

You did a clutch and didn't replace the master cylinder? That very well could be the problem. While you're at it, replace the line/hose between the master and slave. When I replaced the clutch in my '88 Cherokee I did EVERYTHING ... except the line/hose. Both ends are metal, so I conveniently forgot there's a section of rubber pressure hose in the middle.

 

And guess what let go at a toll station on an Interstate highway 100 miles from home a few months later ...

 

100 miles is a LOOONG drive when you don't have a clutch.

Shrug, I don't know man, clutches ain't my thing, it didn't come in the kit, so I didn't think it was necessary. LOL

 

The clutch line is 9 months old. Should I replace it anyways? I mean, this truck has sucked the better part of 6,000 dollars out of me already.

Just replaced my master. It went from working to doing nothing. BUT, after installing the new one, I could tell that the old one must have been "slowly" going bad because no longer did it have a slight bit of "grind" when shifting down (I attributed the "grind" to a trans with 317,000 miles on it) and I have a stronger pedal now. I bet you do have a slight bypassing leak in the master which was not noticeable with the old clutch, and now the old master is not sealing well enough to handle the new pressure.

Bit of advice. When installing the new M.cyl, barely start the bottom mounting nut and then attach the master cyl brake tube to the cyl while you can move the cyl around to get the threads lined up, otherwise you run the risk of stripping the threads on the brake line. Then place the bolt through the top hole and do the contortionist thing again to attach the nut under the dash! :grrrr:

WOW! Apologize again, I am totally ripped so if this doesn't make sense....

 

I understand the Jeep so much better when I am drinkin.. almost makes the hood look good enough to sleep on.

AND, thinking you understand things better when ripped (BTW, not ripped. One ShockTop) is the result of being ripped, but is not true. Consider Elton John admitting all he wrote that he thought was pure perfect because of being stoned was, when rightly analyzed, bad. Don't wanna be ripped and working on something that goes down the highway meant to keep you and others safe, 'cuz your thinking you got it purely perfect very well could result in an accident, like driving ripped.

A beer or two while working, sure, but celebrate after the job is done!

The morning after....

 

So hung over, head pounding, can't hear a thing... yeah that was pretty much it last night, I had a couple of brews and got crazy then it finally dawned on me, all the work I actually have done to this thing. Thats alot mate, alot of time...
