What is the metal box inline on the lower radiator hose?

It's on my 89 4.0 MJ, any idea what it is? I can post a pic if needed.

 

I am going to replace all the hoses and need to know if it is needed or not

we need pics, there shouldn't be anything on the lower hose.

my 88 has something in the middle of its lower hose. turns out it's a tube with a temp sensor bung in it.

MJ's/ XJ's installed with OEM Mopar accessory R12 AC kits were supplied with this. Meaning your truck left the factory w/o air; AC installed by dealer or owner.

I have an 88 XJ with factory air, and there's no box on the lower rad hose.

It is the small silver piece in the pic that was posted, my truck does not have air and I don't plan to add it. When I replace the lower hose I guess it will eliminate this piece?

No wires, but it looks like you could plug a connector into one side of it. I'll take a pic of it in the morning and post it.

At one time there were heater's being sold as a substitute for block heaters, They were installed in the lower radiator hose but never really caught on.
