motomotard
ive been looking for a small truck for a while now. already have an XJ and love it, so i thought id try a comanche out. found a guy about two hours from me with a 92' 4.0 HO, 5 speed, 4x4. he said its an eliminator, but I'm not sure. its lifted 3in on a crap set of 31s, but it runs, 4x4 works, and has a sticker on it good until 11/10. lots of little cosmetic stuff needs to be gone over, tranny is gonna have to be replaced, main seal leaks like crazy, rusty runners and floorboards, etc.... but it moves so I'm happy. got it for $600. id like to eventually clean it up, lift it some more, nothin crazy, just need a battle ready beater to move wood in and goof off on the property i live on. anything i do to it is gonna have to be cheap and it'll probably take me a while, but ill eventually get it cleaned up. here are some pics. and my 99' daily driver XJ for fun

motomotard
so in reverse ill get a knocking/jerking noise. only in reverse, forward gears seem fine. dude i got it from told me it had a BA 10/5 in it, but... i checked online and then compared and i actually have the an AX tranny. is there anyway to tell the difference from the AX 5 and the 15? i can't find any real distinguishing characteristics. i would assume that because its a 92' and 4X4 that it is most likely the AX15, thats what it looks like, can't find a serial plate. the digits 10901276 are stamped on the bottom however? anybody know anything about that? mnkyboy
should be AX15 unless someone put the BA10/5 in it, jeep quit using the BA10/5 partway through 1989. the AX4&AX5 are 4cyl only transmissions
motomotard
so i do have the ax15 in there. picked one up from a junkyard for $150, super deal, don't think they really knew what it was worth.

motomotard
Whats the build date? build date is 10/91 tried to replace the power steering pump last night. got a used one out of a 89 comanche. only found out the mounting bracket was different after getting mine off, total pain in the @$$, now i got to find another bracket somewhere. dasbulliwagen
The PS mount is different because the intake manifolds are different between the renix you got the pump from and the HO youre putting it on. If youre going to swap parts, they should come from same era as the original.
motomotard
so i didnt know the pwr steering mounts were different until i pulled mine off. really annoying, but i made it work. instead of trying to hunt down one the same as mine i just cut the 89' mount down to mirror the 92' one. used an angle grinder and just chopped it. don't know if it will damage the integrity of the mount over time or not, but theres no difference now between the two, other than the chopped part. and with the beat up fender off i started pulling the transmission yesterday with a buddy. have it all out, but the oil pan and the clutch. need to replace my main seal as well as it leaks like crazy. motomotard
so waitin on good weather and my new clutch kit to come in to finish this tranny swap. needed a new internal slave for the trans and the thing is close to $160 from the auto parts store by itself which is just stupid. i got a sachs clutch kit, with the pressure plate, pinion gear, slave, and alignment tool for $186. gonna try to keep my master cylinder but I'm having a hard time getting the slave lines to come off. any tips on getting the quick disconnect thing to work right? its stuck.
