whowey
3.07 ones are only good for boat anchors and mailbox posts. 4.10s can be worth the upgrade in gears. But it is still a 35. :teehee: Got a boat or a new mailbox? I've got one, that I stole the drums off and I'm taking the shafts out of, but after that it would make a really snazzy flowerbox holder in the front yard. Pete M
Nope. No boat or street-box here, but I do have a 3.07 35 of my own in the garage. I'm stripping it of parts and hauling it to the scrap yard. I figure the parts could come in handy some day for someone else on the trail. I own 3 MJs and they have a 44, 20, and 9" for rear axles. :D
JOMJ87
So is a 20 really worth regearing and putting in or should i just buy a 8.8 or go fullwidths(could get a set of 9"/44 for a good deal prob 300). I was just thinking i could get a 20 for cheap and upgrade it but i don't have any experiece with one. Cole
Pete M
Personally, if I was looking for 4.10s, I'd love to use a 20. But if I was putting all the money into regearing and such, I think I'd rather build up an Explorer 8.8. What size tires are you looking to run? JOMJ87
I am running 35s right now with 4.10s and it does ok but i was thinking of going lower like 4.88. But if i was to do the fullwidth swap i would do something in the 5's. I really just want something that i can trust more than my 35 rear which actually lasted thru tellico when i went but i don't want to take a chance. I have a luchbox locker in my 35 so i figure if i sell that stuff i might be able to swap in a 20 for nothing maybe even gain after selling my 3 d35s that i have for spares??? just an idea i had. If i can get one for 100 bucks i think i would do it soon If its worth it. Cole
Pete M
Then I would DEFINITELY grab that 20 and throw it in. :D You can always keep planning for the fullwidths and sell the 20 later on.
JOMJ87
What vahicle do i need to look for to pull one out of i.e.(year make model motor) ??? I would like to get one that i don't have to pay unreal for shipping. Cole
Pete M
Only the 86 MJ has the AMC 20. Could be with either engine.
JOMJ87
That sure makes it hard to find it seems. But i am now in the hunt for one if anyone knows one close to me in SC or western NC i would be very interested or if anyone has plans for a road trip to tellico and wants to drop one off somewhere in that area. Pete M
car-part.com Keep an eye on it and don't limit yourself to just SC.
aemsee
AMC 20 also was in all the V8 AMC cars. My 73 Hornet has one. I don't know width measurements off hand, but might be worth looking in to. BUT, you would need to get one piece axles for it from somewhere. I see them for sale for AMX and Javelins frequently. JOMJ87
Can you check the width and everything for me so i will know if it would fit and work well??? Thank you Cole
Pete M
The big selling points about the MJ AMC-20 is that it's stronger than the Dana 35 and an MJ one will bolt in to an MJ. Anything else would require all the same procedures (or more) as installing the Explorer 8.8 and it gives you great strength, 4.10s, and disk brakes. JOMJ87
I have priced 8.8s and there are unreal here since i have no pick n pull I know of close to me that i can get my truck to without a fight on the interstate (cause its not very interstate friendly) :D . I was thinking if i can get one real cheap somewhere then I would be alot better off than paying $475 for an 8.8 that i have to regear. But i guess your right its best to find exactly what i need. Cole
Pete M
Keep looking for the 8.8s. They made a butt load of Explorers over the years and it's just a matter of finding a junkyard that doesn't view their crap as gold. car-part.com shows a bunch of v6 4.10/disk 8.8s for under $250, not sure if any are near you though. (v6 and v8 axles are identical except for the brackets you're going to cut off anyway)

JOMJ87
:huh???: I think i missed something ???CO??? or do you OH? I am so confused but if your asking about me traveling anywhere I only get up to 60 mph on the road and i don't have the greatest motor. My truck hardly leaves base except for local wheeling or being towed by a friend. Cole
feerocknok
In one post or another you mentioned perhaps a base change. I don't know where to or what post it was in.
JOMJ87
Oh yeah I was saying i wanted to come up closer to all of you guys that seem to have all the right parts. feerocknok
Which overseas? May be dangerous, but I've also heard hazard pays nice.
