Squeegy410
O.K. I have an '89 eliminator with a 4.0, 5 speed, and a d44 rear end. It's my DD but I want to do more with it. I'm on a very tight budget so anything I do has to be very carefully planned out. I would love to make it a 4WD but have no idea how much money that would mean pouring into it. I have all the tools to do it including cutting torch, grinders, welders, and anything else you could imagine, I just need direction. Help me out people. I have a clean slate and need helping writing on it :help: . Let me know what you think and let other people know so I get plenty of feedback. here's what we have to work with: There are additional pics on this thread viewtopic.php?f=7&t=21056
jpnjim
Drive it, enjoy it, and start collecting parts as they turn up. Joining a local 4x4 club should make lots of the stuff available to you for cheap. (as other people upgrade to bigger & better stuff) Since it's your DD, plan on doing the swap a little at a time: swap the ft axle in, drive it, while looking for a tranny & t-case. If you're junkyard shopping you can sell the stuff you find cheap, and trade up to the stuff you need.

freakjeep93
:agree: if yours isnt a 4wd? if it isnt get a good front axel and a ax15 with a transfercase and then do the swap gradually.
Squeegy410
hahaha wow i was very tired when i posted that second one last night. I feel verrrrrrrry stupid after that. I even asked my brother what he thinks about making it a 4WD and asked him why I needed a tranny with it. Sorry for the brain fart. But I'm not as ignorant as I make myself out to be I do know I need a transfer case to match the 4WD front end. Does jeep make a divorced transfer case? If so what would I find one on? freakjeep93
it would be VERY hard to put a divorced case on a comanche tryst e i was looking into using a divorced np 205 for a 4wd coversion. it couldnt work, what you need is a factory jeep 4wd tranny and transfer case. Squeegy410
alright. Are 5 speed 4wd trannys common or are they hard to find? Because I would like to keep it a stick. I would also like to have my tranny incase i grind some gears down to nothing haha.

Squeegy410
How would I tell which transmission is under my truck? It's a five speed no granny low and I'm pretty sure it's stock from '89. I'm new to jeeps sorry for all the questios :???:
freakjeep93
i hink it should be a ba 10 but i wouldnt be sure. something tells me that after 90 they were ax15s behind 4.0 hos edit you tell by what it looks like theres a pic in the random picture thread in the DIY section that has the differences.
Squeegy410
alright I'll look it up :D thanks. I'll try to post a pic of the tranny if it ever warms up here. I don't feel like crawling around in the cold.
Squeegy410
I JUST GOT A GREAT IDEA! I have sitting out back two essentially junk ford broncos. My whole family drives fords except for me haha (i have my mj and a '72 dodge dart). If I could ever convince my dad into it I may be able to pull the front and rear axles from a bronco (i think thats what pete m did, thanks for the idea  ) and then i would just need a tranny/transfer case and probobly a lift kit (maybe not). Any input?
jayizle
definetly get a lift kit. it will help you out alot. one for the trail and two it will look better

jayizle
is your rear springs under the axle or over the axle?
MJ300
All MJ's have a spring under design. As for lifting it for cheap...spacers and shackles are a common way to get an inch or two, at 3" and higher your looking at much more $ to do it the right way. Squeegy410
all i did with mine is was a three inch spring and two add a leafs on both sides. i can get 33's on there how much money did that take? if you don't mind me asking.
jayizle
well the add a leafs where like 100 a peice and i don't remember how much the spring was. one of the best things to do is go online and find a off road place and see what there lift kits cost
Squeegy410
alright i'll do that. I also plan to make a rear bumper for it out of a piece of 3 1/2" iron pipe. any suggestions on that?
jayizle
as long as you plan on building that iron to the brackets your fine but if you weld that iron on find someone good because i welded my bumper on and it has holes in the sheet metal now :grrrr:
