offroader461
i have an 87manche with a stock front d30 and np231 t/c with the vacuum actuated design and was wondering if i get a d30hp without the actuator what would be the best bet for a new t/c. i am planning a ax-15 swap in the near future and am looking for a non actuated t/c that will bolt right up and still work with the driveline and trans..what year xj/mj should i get my axle from and what year xj/mj and type of t/c should i snag...thx 4 the help
offroader461
also is there any np231 from the xj/mj years that are not vacuum actuated?? thx again
Pete M
No Jeep 231 is "vacuum actuated". The t-case is lever actuated and has a switch in it that sends vaccum from the engine to the front axle, which is vacuum actuated.

There's nothing different about a high pinion 30 without a vaccum disco and your stock d30 except for the lack of the vaccum casing on the axle...in other words it will fit you driveshaft and current tcase exactly the same way. 87manche
put in the non-disco axle, then cap all the vacuum lines. It will be fine. Only issue is that you'll lose the part time indicator in the dash.

But... Make sure your new front axle gears match your rear axle gears. Always simple, often overlooked.
Pete M
You need to swap in new seal with the new solid axle. Now's the time to get both shafts and get ones with the bigger U-joints. :D Cause bigger is better. http://www.madxj.com/MADXJ/technical/te ... dSeals.htm
offroader461
ok cool i think I'm gunna call on the axle shafts tonight and get a price with new seals so i can elimante the cad system all together..much easier that trying to swap a complete front d30...should i try and use the ox297 u joints at the outers i heard those are great
Pete M
You'll need to make sure both the inner and outer shafts accept the 297s. They are bigger than the stock MJ 260s. Dana 44 sized. :D
Eagle
Chrysler dropped the vacuum disconnect beginning in either 91 or 92, so any XJ or MJ 231 t-case from 92 and newer will be free of the vacuum switch.
Pete M
car-part.com shows the disconnect through 93. :dunno: I often wonder where they get all the info they have.
JOMJ87
I have heard its not that simple but i am not sure. I read that the CAD axle seal is not made to seal around the straight axle???? I also read it in a off-road mag but who knows. It was something about the housing don't have a place for the inner seal that is used on a non disco and it can leak fluid and allow water intake. Also the inner seal fro the cad one will not seal on the straight axle. I will see if i can find the article for you but i don't know first hand. :dunno: Cole
