james750 Posted January 8, 2010 Posted January 8, 2010 Don't put gear lube in, it eats the synchro's. ATF goes in the Tcase, not the trans. The updated lubricant for the AX15 is 10w30 motor oil. It is the same viscosity as 80-90 GL but without the harsh additives that eat the synchros on these transmissions.

It is the same viscosity as 80-90 GL but without the harsh additives that eat the synchros on these transmissions. GL5 gear lubes contain sulfur, which is what damages the bronze synchros. But GL-3 gear lube was and is the correct fluid for the AX-15. Since GL-3 is no longer available, GL-4 which still contains no sulfur is now the correct fluid. Chrysler has a history of completely blowing the fluid recommendation for these trannies. They are the ones that started putting the GL-5 gear lubes in that damaged the synchros. Now after the AX-15's have their warranties expire.. only now Chrysler recommends to use motor oil. The same exact situation happened with the AW-4 fluid recommedation. Up until Apr 08 Chrysler recommends Dex III in all AW-4's, going so far as putting a note in TSB's specifically exempting the AW-4. But in Apr 08, when the 2001 7/70 warranties would have been expiring.. they suddenly reverse course and start recommending ATF+4. Doesn't leave me with much confidence in any recommendations for Jeeps.....

The trans lasts just long enough to get out of warranty then self destructs in time to make you purchase another vehicle or spend alot of money in thier service departments. :fool: Nothing like a good conspiracy theory LOL.
