the question was whether or not an Acer Aspire has the horsepower to run it.

Definitely. As with most computers, it comes with all that security crap and extra programs installed, but you can tweak it to run rather nicely.

This came with XP Home SP3, but I've got it tweaked to run as smoothly as XP Pro SP1.

Just a little size comparison for you, sandwiched between my 15" Dell and my Nintendo DS.

I LOVE my Aspire one. No CD drive? Big whoop. That's what virtuals are for. It comes with XP Home, and although I prefer XP Pro, I'll take XP Home over Vista or 7 any day.

They're light, and very portable. I have larger hands, and have no issue with the tiny keyboard. The battery lasts for a good 3 hours, and it's about the size of 3 C batteries.

I also got used to the tiny screen rather quickly. Went from 15" 4:3 on my Dell to 10.1" 16:9 on my Aspire, and it hasn't really been a problem.

If you plan on gaming... no, it's not the computer for you. But if you plan on basic stuff, I.E. Facebook, email, CC, some light gaming (I play RCT 1 and SC BW all the time), etc, then you're good to go.

If you absolutely have to have a CD ROM drive instead of running a virtual with ISOs on your HD, get an external USB one.

x2 on all accounts.

I use mine for the net, which is what its designed for. The only issue I have noticed is the vertical resolution of the screen, certain webpages don't resize and they are bigger than my screen, so I lose access to the buttons. Other than that its great, its a Dell Mini 10v, 10.1" screen, 1gb ram, 160gb hard drive and the faster 1.8?? ghz processor and the keyboard is 92% the size of a fullsize one, I don't even notice it smaller than my work laptops keyboard. It runs office, and itunes and photoshop just fine.

My buddy bought an Acer one and absolutely hated it, it was very slow and didn't run any programs that needed some power. He ended up getting rid of it and getting a dell to replace it and is very happy with the new one.

edit: get the bigger battery too. i have the 6 cell one and I get no less than 6 hours of run time from a full charge.

Cool. So we can expect your typing to improve now that you won't have to use the gaming keyboard, right? Wait, you're from Canada, let me rephrase that:

Just joshing, Mate. Let us know how you like it, because I may have to pick up one of those little darlin's.

Spellcheck has nothing to do with your computer. Get Firefox, IE sucks. It will check your spelling for you.

Also, it's not hard to simply read over your posts quick before you hit submit. There's a difference between not being able to spell very well, and simply not even knowing what you're typing.

on another point i got ror working in the netbook its just kinda slow.

"ror"? :huh???:

It's that Rigs of Rods offroading game Rob had up in the Pub awhile back. I ran it too... it was slow for me as well. But from what I understand, it went kind of slow for everyone.

For the people interested in purchasing netbooks in the future:

I'm a bit of a computer geek. I think I have around 10 computers or so, most of them desktops, but four of them laptops. Each has its own specific purpose, but the one that gets the most use is my Samsung NC10 netbook. Prior to getting an iPhone, I would use the netbook for a few hours each day after work. The thing is incredibly convenient and the battery life on this particular netbook is ridiculous - around 6 hours during normal computing. It did take a little bit to get used to - especially coming from a powerhouse PC with a 24" monitor, but I did some tweaks, increased some font sizes and everything is good.

The netbook is very handy when I go out on business trips or do some field engineering work. My only gripe is the touchpad, but I've never liked touchpads on ANY laptop - even bought a Lenovo laptop just for the old style nub in the middle of the keyboard. I bought a wireless mouse for the netbook to take care of that problem - an extra 25 bucks.

It seems a lot of people are going for the 'bigger is better' trend in terms of screen size, but I seem to be going in the opposite direction. The 24" LCD monitor is nice and my 86" HD projector connected to my home theater PC is even nicer, but I'm very rarely in my home to even use these screens, hence why I've went with the ultra-portable netbook and now an iPhone.

Edit: Also, another cool feature of the Samsung netbook (and this might be true with other manufacturers) is that they make a cigarette lighter charger for it for like 10 bucks.

Well I've had my ASUS Eee since March ( I think). It has been a great little 'puter. I have StarMOBILE software loaded on it for work and it is great for interfacing with the diag tool on a roadtest. Way better than hauling around a full sized laptop. If I was still in a dealership and roadtesting everyday I would get one with a SSHD to make it even safer to kick around.

I've seen them on sale for under $200.
