Mini Spool

Recommended Posts

hello. my MJ passed inspection last tuesday. I really like it. no complaints outside of open diff with new england winter. had two storms so far and I don't think I can make it the rest of the season without some kind of traction aid. since 4x4 swap is off till spring I was debating other options, wither welding the spider gears ( can't weld) or a mini spool I can't think of anything cost effective.

So has anyone made a minispool for a 35?

If not, does anyone want to come weld up my spider gears?

steering? what is this "steering" of which you speak?

:D

Seriously though, it sucks. I've got a locker to go in there should I ever get those dang tiny ford hub bolts out. At least with a locker it'll disengage when I shift into 2wd so I can cut those sharp turns on the trail.

Wow!!! Back tha truck up. Whats this about turning sucks when you have a locker. I thought they were supposed to slip when your turning. Is that to say you can't run a front locker on pavement? What about tha rear with a locker. I thought I had read something about being able to hear a locker clicking and or unlocking as you turn corners on tha street.

Would somebody please explain all this to tha nooby before he starts buyin lockers for his daily driver.

I don't have a locker up front (yet). I have a spool. it never ever unlocks and so my steering easily binds up on tight twisty trails.

A front locker should unlock when you take the power away (meaning it's in 2wd).

Lockers for the win. I absolutely hated driving in the snow with the open front and rear, even in 4x4. Locked 2x4 works better than the old open 4x4 ever did, and the rear end is controlled an 100% predictable in its movement. That doesn't mean that you can drive like an idiot in the snow and not lose control, but I much prefer having control of the rear wheels together with the throttle and clutch and steering than having one or two wheels lose grip and spin up. I have never felt like I am in more control in the snow with open diffs than limited slip or lockers. It takes a different driving style for sure, smooth steering throttle clutch and brakes, but I'll take two rear driving wheels over one any day of the week.

A Dana 35 isn't worth a dime to spend on any traction aid ;)

I have a mini spool in the front of my MJ

So do I. :D

how is the steering?

On the road? Perfect thanks to locking hubs :D

Off road it is fine on the rocks and dirt. We have to snow out here.

Used D35 lockrghts are usually pretty cheap/easy to find,

if you could get one cheap enough, I could see doing that till you can upgrade the 35 to something else.

12-15 years ago we had the "April Fools Blizzard" dump 2-3 feet of heavy snow overnight,

my 2wd MJ made it through 15 miles of buried sidestreets to work that day,

2wd/open rear, 4" lift/soa, old junk 31" tires, but the back bumper practically dragging the ground, bed filled with cinderblocks & snow/ice. :D

Edit, for anyone not in New England in 1997, this was the storm :D

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/April_Fool ... y_blizzard

The 25.4 inches (650 mm) that fell at Boston's Logan International Airport (BOS) was the biggest April snowstorm in the city's history and made April 1997 the Boston's snowiest April on record (the previous record being a mere 13.3 inches). In the Allston/Brighton area totals of 30.1 inches (760 mm) were recorded. It also set a record for Boston's greatest April 24-hour snowfall. At the peak of the storm from about 11 pm March 31 to 3 am April 1 snow was falling at an almost unheard-of rate of three inches (76 mm) per hour. Numerous lightning strikes and thunderclaps accompanied the extremely heavy snow, which accumulated one foot in just that four hour period. This was too fast for road crews to keep up with, and roads became impassable. In fact, some of the narrow side streets of Boston were simply buried. No one had any hope of going anywhere, until road crews could remove the trememdous amount of snow, which took several days in many cases. Clearing the streets of so much snow resulted in huge piles remaining on street corners for days. These piles made driving difficult and also clogged many of the storm drains.

In addition to unpassable streets and avenues for cars and trucks; Boston's rapid transit system (MBTA,)also known as the "T", could not run on its above ground rails. Many trains, especially on the Green line failed at traffic lights and uphill grades. Major crosstown arteries such as Commonwealth Avenue and Beacon and Huntington streets were blocked. (The "T" was closed down on April 1st. no buses or Train were running at all.)

Not only was the snow falling at an incredibly fast rate, but the snow was very heavy and wet, which caused tree limbs and even whole trees to come down. Some fell on power lines, and many lost power. Many ski areas also benefited from the snowfall. Hunter Mountain received 37 inches (940 mm) of snow.

My 2wd Comanche didn't fail me that day.

:

I'm assuming that reply was for me. If you remember, back in my (My D35 is Growling at me.) thread I ended up buying that 8.25 axle from Matt. (comanche09) Havent started setting it up yet but hope to after tha first of tha year. By then I hope to have some 4.11 gears and a locker to install before I put it in. Yes, I'll also be putting 4.11's and a locker in tha front as well. As before, when I put this thing into 4 wheel drive ......... I want 4 wheel drive. Not none of this tire or that tire spinnin b/s.

Question, is there a life expectancy on lockers in a daily driver?
