And pull to the right.

Now you have your lock out. What about getting the steering wheel to unlock or starting the Jeep until the replacement parts are procured?

Well, me being the impatient one that I am I broke the plastic cover on the column.

The rod that controls the steering lock and ingition switch is right there. You can accomplish the next step without busting your column up. It just has to be done from under the dash.

Grab the rod and push it forward.

Here you can see the steering wheel lock engaged (pointed thing at the top of the column)

And here it is released.

Reassemble everything in reverse order and you will be able to start and drive your Jeep without a key.

This is not suggested but if you are in a bind this will get you out of it rather quickly

Regarding the steering wheel lock, when it's engaged, the ignition is off, and vice versa, when its released ignition is on ? The reason i ask is the metal tab that runs along the plastic cog behind it broke off, steering lock pin doesnt move. I'm trying to remove the ignition cylinder. there's no retaining screw to hold the cylinder in and i can't find any circlip, yet i can't pull the cylinder out. Should the steering lock be released and ignition on ...in order to pull ignition cylinder out ?

Yes the key should be in the on position to remove the key cylinder

If the metal tab, that operates when the plastic cog is turned with the key, is broken, is there a chance that the ignition is not turned on ? And is there a way to turn the ignition on manually on the ignition switch lower down on the steering column? If so, anything to watch out for ?

you said "Yes and yes, you will have to pull the ignition switch off the side of the column and move the rod" i've unbolted the ignition switch and tried moving the rod into the start position but it doesnt want to stay. Am i doing something wrong ?
Also, i've tracked down the metal tab that was broken, its a rack and sector gear, i imagine i'm going to have to disassemble the whole column and remove the collar to install a new one ?

Followed this, but can't seem to get my ignition cylinder out. Is there something I'm missing? The FSM says to take out the buzzer piece (two copper contacts + white plastic) but that doesn't seem to want to come out either. I've tried turning the ignition to ACC, ON, etc. and it doesn't want to budge.

This is mentioned in the FSM, but I don't see anything?
