TTREB4
My brother bought a Jeep Comanche back in 88. He put about 80K miles then the transmission blew. It's been parked ever since in my parents driveway (about 15 years). I've kept after him to sale it to me and let me fix it up. I think it's had some sentimental value to him (his first truck). Finally he has given in and said I could have it. :clapping: Its a 2WD with the inline 6 and the peugot 5 speed. From what I've read this transmission isn't worth anything. I want to make this just a daily driver for me. and I really don't want to dump a lot of money into this or have to make modifications. I just want a good economical truck to drive. As far as I can tell the body is still in great shape. The paint has started to fade but I think I can bring some of that back with a good cleaning and wax. He has kept the window shades up on it so the interior is still in good shape too. I know I need a new transmission...I was thinking the AX15 or the NV3550. These seem to be decent 5 speed transmissions that won't break the bank and be a direct fit. Is there another option?? I read about a 6 speed in an article but can't seem to find anymore about them. My other concern is the motor. It was strong with no problem when it was parked. Now it has been sitting for so long I'm afraid I'll collapse a ring or two when I start it up. Is there a way to work the motor back in? Any other items I need to be aware of would greatly be appreciated.
jimoshel
On the engine, I would remove the spark plugs, squirt a couple oz's of oil, or tranny fluid into each cylinder.Spin it over for 5-10 seconds.See if the OPG shows anything. Replace the plugs and fire it up.Don;t rev it. Just a fast idle for a couple minutes. Check for fluid leaks and noises. Good luck. Two trains of thought here. One is change the oil and filter B4 starting it. Two is run it first until hot, Then change the oil. My feeling is run it first until hot, then change. You must own a much bigger bank than I do if you're thinking about an NV3550 conversion on an 88 Comanche. HOW much did you want to spend?
TTREB4
I really don't want to spend a whole lot. I thought that the AX15 and NV3550 would be a direct bolt up and not require much conversion or modifications? I am just starting out and looking into costs. I really would like to get a direct bolt up transmission. I really know nothing about jeeps and I'm trying to learn. so please elighten me. I will definitely pull the plugs and dump some oil do I need to let it set for a while before I try and turn it over?
jimoshel
Not necessary. You've got a 'dry motor' there. You want to get some oil on the cylinder walls. and other moving parts.Just spinning it over will do that.
Eagle
Remove the fuel pump relay. I would pull the spark plugs, squirt a bunch of light oil in there (like 0W20), and let it sit for a few days. Then squirt in a bit more, leave the plugs out, put a wrench on the bolt at the front of the crankshaft and see if you can spin the engine by hand. If so, spin it a few times by hand, squirt in some more oil, THEN use the starter to spin it a little faster. Be sure the oil pressure shows in the gauge (if there's a gauge) or that the light goes off if it has idiot lights. Then you can think about putting the spark plugs back in and trying to start it. Siphon the gas out of the tank. ALL of it. Put in fresh gas. Replace the fule filter. Then replace the relay and let the fuel pump try to move some new gas to the fuel rail. Oizarod115
Remove the fuel pump relay...... Then replace the relay and let the fuel pump try to move some new gas to the fuel rail. i don't want to contradict you here because if you pull that relay the pump SHOULD NOT run, but something is up with my truck and the fuel pump would run with ALL the relays removed, and the resistor unplugged (this is while running the starter)... the only way i could get it to shut off for sure was to unplug the connector under the truck (which only takes a few seconds anyways) so if you want to be DARNED sure it won't run unplug it underneath
rworks
I have to question whether you "need" to replace the transmission. While its true that its "weak", I owned a 2WD '87 with the 4.0L and Peugot 5spd for six years and the transmission never missed a beat. The reality is that if you just drive it around as a daily driver you shouldn't have issues. I'd get it running first and then check the tranny out before I got too involved with replacing it. Everything I have read so far just pretty much said don't waste money trying to rebuild this transmission. I have even talked with a couple of transmission shops and they said the same thing. Although, it is something to think about. :hmm: What about hooking a trailer onto it? Is it strong enough to tow with. I live in a rural community and commute about 20 miles to work each way. it's all two lane roads about 60 mph. I also do a lot of different things and I will on a regular basis hook onto a small (7X10) utility trailer and haul things with. Living in the rural area we often go in the mountains or on the desert for some exploring. If the pegot transmission is stout enough to do these things then I will look at going this route. I am sure it will be cheapest route.
aerocorey
I sold a BA-10 to a guy for $200 when I lived in Utah. All he needed was one little ring that sits on top of the shifter housing. You can swap to an AX-15 for not much more than $200. BA-10 is fine for a DD until it breaks. Once it does, don't spend a dime on it.
comanche09
You can have my BA10/5 when I get around to doing my AX-15 and 4x4 swap (Just pay shipping). Its 2wd with around 102k miles on it. Seeps a bit out of the centerline split in the case (no drips though), but otherwise shifts perfect. -Sitting for 15 years! Check all the hoses/rubber, replace the drivebelt. Check for varmint damage BEFORE you hook up a new battery to it... Mice love to chew up electrical wiring... Have a fire extinquisher handy. Remove the fuel tank and inspect/clean it. Don't add gas until you know all the decomposed gas is out and its clean/ok.

Pete M
My Peugeot worked just fine in my daily driver. that is until it grenaded while I was cruisin' along the freeway. blew a hole out the side which promptly drained all the oil. Still managed to limp my way home some 25 miles. :D eventually it got stuck in 3rd gear and was making horrendous noises the whole way. the last few miles were really interesting. :rotfl2: Bottom line, if your Peugeot is working, keep the oil level up and be nice to it and it just might last. :D But read up on the AX-15 swap in the mean time and be prepared. try car-part.com be sure to search for a plethora of years and models since TJ and YJ and XJ stuff have different part numbers and part numbers for each individual model changed over the years
oldrusty
Ihave an 89 4x4 with a 4.0 and puegot 5 spd. Truck has 208,000 o the clock now. The po told me the trans had been replaced when I got it. I have put about 35,000 miles on this truck since ive had it. I drive it every day, plow snow with it in the winter time, and use it to pull my 12 foot trailer ( weighs about 1,100 lbs ) loaded with 2 large atvs. The trans is still going strong. While not the greataest of trans in a dd with stock size tires the stock 5 spd will do the job as long as you don't abuse it......just my 2 cents
comanche09
Corey, where can you get an AX-15 for $200? U-Pull-It Junkyards are your friend- Got my Ax-15 for $
aerocorey
Corey, where can you get an AX-15 for $200? :huh???: Are you serious? http://burlington.craigslist.org/cto/1474698883.html I can get a complete Cherokee for $300. You can get a transmission at some junkyards for less than $200. I want to say most junkyards, but I haven't been to most of the junkyards in the USA, so I'll just say some. Bottom line, if your Peugeot is working, keep the oil level up and be nice to it and it just might last. I agree 100%. I DDd my Peugeot for awhile, then I had an AX-15 on hand, so I swapped. Remember, though, OP said that the transmission went out at 80k, that's why it's parked. OP, don't spend a dime on your transmission. Go AX-15. Consider it an investment.
