bigalpha Posted November 30, 2009 Posted November 30, 2009 Driver side. 1988. Where the cable enters the brake assy (the big rubber-coated section) is rubbing on the rim. Is there supposed to be a spring or something that pulls that section of the cable away from the rim or what? TIA.
WBKrazy Posted November 30, 2009 Posted November 30, 2009 yeah, there's supposed to be a spring there, mine are gone as well on both sides, i ended up using steel hose clamps and clamping the cables to the leaf spring
bigalpha Posted December 1, 2009 Author Posted December 1, 2009 Does anyone have some info on what springs to use and how they should mount up?
Pete M Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 I've never even seen such a spring. :dunno: But then, I live in Michigan. :(
bigalpha Posted December 3, 2009 Author Posted December 3, 2009 So what is causing my rubbing issue and how do I fix?
Pete M Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 I'd probably just go with a hose clap or zip tie. All you need to do is pull it away from the tire a bit.
azscott Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 ...yah tell me about it. I just figured this issue out. I kept hearing a regular clicking noise from my rear end....man I thought something was going south or at the very least maybe some bad U-joints. At first I could not find anything looking underneath. FInally I crawled under there again and finally saw that the cable was hitting one of the tire weights....it had almost cut through the cable sheath and had worn off part of the weight. I just zip tied the cable to the leaf spring enough to keep the cable an inch or two off the rim. .....now I have to have the tire rebalnced. scott
bigalpha Posted December 3, 2009 Author Posted December 3, 2009 Looks like zip tie is the fastest and easiest solution right now. But if there was no spring or anything from the factory, what kept the line from hitting the rim?
Geonovast Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 I seem to remember seeing some sort of spring holding it away from the axle. At least all my XJs had them. I don't remember if the MJs do or not.

JeffK Posted December 3, 2009 Posted December 3, 2009 Looks like zip tie is the fastest and easiest solution right now. But if there was no spring or anything from the factory, what kept the line from hitting the rim? I just pull the rear axle out of my bone stock '89. The only thing attached to the parking brake cables were the clamps shown in the pic. They kept the cable at an angle away from the rim. There were no springs or other attachments just the clamps pictured.
bigalpha Posted December 3, 2009 Author Posted December 3, 2009 Thanks for the pic. I'll have to double check and make sure those are still installed. If they are, then I'll just pop a ziptie or two on it.
Oizarod115 Posted December 4, 2009 Posted December 4, 2009 There are also springs that are just pulling the cables towards a hole in the frame-rail. no big deal, should be able to find some in the help section of the autoparts store or possibly a tractor supply or something.
bigalpha Posted December 4, 2009 Author Posted December 4, 2009 Cool. I thought there might be something like that, but I wanted to know how the thing was originally set up.
