jmderyke
I have a 86 Comanche that has a rattle that sounds just like a exhaust rattle but its coming from the transmission, the flywheel inspection cover is tight maybe a loose clutch part. anyone ever have this problem before? Pete M
what are the specific circumstances when you hear this rattle? idling? under throttle? are you in the truck or under the truck?
jmderyke
it rattles all the time, at idle, driving around, clutch engaged and disengaged, under loads and going down hill with no load, it will stop at certain rpms when driving around for a second or two then go back to rattling. I'm thinking a loose clutch finger on the pressure plate or spring on clutch friction plate, or release lever not sure, any thoughts?
james750
With your clutch disengaged at a complete stop, nothing should be spinning in your trans, maybe it is clutch related, possibly a pilot bearing? If it only does it with the clutch engaged, in neutral at a complete stop or in gear and moving, then it could be something inside the trans. sinkrun
Just a thought check and see if the exhaust mount is broken the one at the cross member it can make some funky noises when it breaks.
comanche09
I had a similar rattle when I first got my rig. Turned out to be the catalytic converter. The insides broke apart causing the marbles in a coffee can type of rattle.

jmderyke
Yeah i thought it was the cat. but its solid. I check the connection at the crossmember when i first got the truck and it was fine. No doubt its coming from the bell housing. I'm going to start tear down later today and i will post my findings. Thanks for the thoughts guys
jmderyke
found the rattle! it was the flywheel inspection cover, it was tight but still had a rattle bent it a touch good as new

Automan2164
Awesome! I love easy fixes. :D Agreed. I would rather think it be something huge, and find a little thing, than the other way around. Rob L.

Geonovast
What was rattling? If all the bellhousing bolts were tight, and the inspection cover was tight, it shouldn't be rattling at all, even if it was a little bent. Did you check to make sure you still have all 6 bellhousing bolts going into the motor?
jmderyke
crazy right haha it looked like it got a small dent in it from previous owner near stater and that created a small gap with only the dent touching housing in that area
