FAILED Smog Check - Inoperative EGR System -> Now PASSED

Recommended Posts

Take the whole throttle body off, pull the IAC out, (leave your TPS IN!), and spray the hell out of it with O2 sensor safe throttle body cleaner, and scrub everything down with a toothbrush. Wipe it down and put it back on.

What exactly is all of that going to do? I'm still going to have noisy crappy lifters and the truck is still gonna run like poo until it blows up...

Should help fix the idle...?

If you really think it's a lifter, you can replace those without pulling the motor or the head. If I was you, I'd pull the oil pan off, see if any of the rods or pistons have any play in them, and do the bearings while you were at it.

You realize who your talking to, right? You read the excessively ignorantly stupid questions and comments that I post on a semi regular basis and you think I remote have the ability to do any bearings or motor head pulling?

Thank Gawd I don't have to deal w. antique Renault electronics. Nothing they (the French) ever built was even remotely long-term reliable in a corrosive climate. The only possible even crappier maximus electronics manufacturer was Lucas. AMC allied w. Renault in a futile effort to save the marque, that of course failed prematurely maybe because of that alliance. And I'm willing to bet a large sum you don't have these constant problems w. your TJ SW2.

Sorry SW2, rant over - this isn't helping you w. the Cali smog test.

the renix throttle DOES have an adjustment screw for the idle. it's a very small allen head and it doesn't really look like a screw but it is!!

i have no good pictures but its a short little screw thing that the throttle rod actually stops on. and can be adjusted with everything together while the truck is running even.

i circled where the screw is in the picture, you can get it with a small allen from the opposite side of that little armature.

I see it... just can't seem to get any thing to fit inside...you sure it's all and not torx or something goofy way up inside there?

***EDIT*** seems like the 2.5mm allen/hex finally got the screw to turn a little bit... need to fire it up and get it warm so I can get it adjusted correctly!

Thanks!

if you have time and want to be 110%, calibrate the TPS and then adjust idle. and then replace your vac setup. i really feel bad for you having to live in California and whatnot. here, in new hampshire, only vehicles 96 and newer (OBDII) compliant have to be check for emissions, and the check is just a scan for readiness and if ther are any dtc's (if the mil is on) then you fail, but you have a 60 day grace to fix it. so whats it like not having any guns? or freedoms in that matter?

Here in California, we have to pay an extra $20 for vehicles older than 96 because of an extra fuel evaporative pressure test they do where they pressurize the gas tank with nitrogen and check for leaks.

what's this "emission test" you guys keep talking about?

:D

Bureaucratic BS that we get to put up with to live 10 minutes to the Ocean , 3 Hours to Ski'ing, 4 Hours to the Rubicon Trail, Dusy, etc, etc... and have perfect weather about 80% of the year.

I pulled the MJ out of the Garage today for the first time in a long time. Tweaked the idle up to somewhere between 750-900, replaced one more vac line (the one going from the throttle body up to the back of the engine bay), and it seemed to be doing pretty well (except for the lifter thing).

The Shop that I did the last smog shop isn't doing them this week since their machine is down right now, so I need to get to another place to get it smogged and then pay the $200 DMV Bill (late fee since the tags expired).

Then I get to see if I got the interior leaks fixed and reinstall my interior! Maybe next week. Front Tow Hooks should also be here early next week.

 No freekin' way. The baddies outweigh the benes. The "pleasure" of living there is not worth the aggravation and $$ mate. The people, taxes, real estate, politics, QOL, etc. all sucks. I don't fault you at all for being disgusted and fed up at times Wade-man.

My post is no freeking help on passing your smog test - sorry, but it's just one more of life's little expensive aggravations you have to live with to be in Paradise.

WooHoo.... just passed the smog with flying colors, all of the exhaust gasses and whatever else they measure were at or below the averages and well below the Max Limits. The EGR Valve was fine and now I just get to pay DMV a couple bennies to register ($110 for registration and about $90 late fee since it was due at the end of August.) :wall:

so just an idle adjustment and some vacuum leaks then?

:clapping: :clapping: good deal

Was more than Vacuum leaks really...pretty much replacement of the whole main vacuum block... I don't think much of that stuff was hooked up correctly at all...was pretty FUBAR..
