Question of the day. Price is right?

Given the chance, would you buy a dana 30/35c combo with 4.10's, for $275? :dunno: There is someone parting out an '86 MJ 2.5L 4x4 4 speed by me, and thats what he's asking for the set, hub to hub. He said hes very negotiable though, leads me to believe there is even more room in there. I am thinking about offering $200. I am just looking to get the taste of those 3.07's out of my mouth. :ack: He also said he might have an 8.25 sitting in storage :thumbsup: , most likely different gears. Might pick 'em up, and do the 8.25 later. I can switch in the later axleshafts on the d30 to bring it up to par, no?

 

Big question though, should i buy? Would you buy?

DEFINEATELY plan on double and trip checking the ratio. Seems like he knows what he's talking about, he has been building jeeps for a long time. Or so he says. Knew what I was talking about when i started rambling about the 8.25...etc. So hopefully he doesn't end up being wrong. Would be nice to get a replacement front axle and whatnot with matching rear for time being. If he does have a 8.25 on the side, just a bonus. So far, around here, everywhere ive been calling is asking about $750-900 for a set of d30/8.25's so this is just cheap enough to get me off the ground, well back on it anyway, rolling. Am i correct with the later model axleshaft swap? Been awhile since i have been in the jeep scene, just need some refreshers.

 

But hey, If i can get a workable(shaft swap req'd) d30 with the gears i want, thats half the battle, without having to regear.

It is a bit high, but may be worth it.

 

I would TRIPLE check the ratio. Most 2.5/4 speed combos came with 3.55s.

Do really think $200 for both axles is a bit high :???: . I Guess if you could get a whole truck for that it might be.

 

Oh yeah, if I need them it would be worth it. 1 vote yes

Saweet. Thanks. I will have to call him back. Maybe if i offer to help take the axles out he will come down on the price. Or i could just buy the whole darn truck for $500. Too bad i don't have the room.

Crap. Just called to double check everything, asked him how he checked the gear ratio. Said he had a book that told him 4 cyl 4 speeds came with 4.10's. Double crap. Well, he said he'll pull the cover and count teeth at this point and get back to me. Lets hope his book is right, and possibly these gears were an option checked off.

 

Oh yeah, agreed price of $250 if everything is 10-4.

 

Keep yer fingers crossed for me!

Rob, to change the subject: You list in your signature an ex '91 Comanche MJ 4.0L 4x4 AT Eliminator. Is this the one you sold to Alex? Was it a "real" Eliminator? 91 was the first year for the 4WD Eliminators.

Yeah, the one i sold to alex(girs86mj, i believe) was the eliminator. If you run his vin it will show as a true original 4x4 eliminator. Great truck when i bought it, but I had to replace all of the body panels, doors, the body was in bad shape. Maaco paint job helped, but instead of a 100 footer, turned it into a 25 footer. The paint came out very sub-par. I actually sold all of my parts to alex too. I hope he's doing good, and the truck is treating him well.

The tooth counts on Dana gearsets are stamped into the face of the ring gear. Not saying the "counting teeth" method won't work, but to be 100% certain, check the stamp. There will be a long series of numbers stamped, like 2947384-3824423 (not an actual set of numbers there, I just mashed the 10-key pad as an example) and then a space, and then a set of two numbers all by themselves....like 41 10 or 37 9 (for 4.10's anyway). Before you plunk any cash down, go eyeball this for yourself and verify.

well, last I talked to him the truck is still there (has side impact driver's side on the B-pillar and rocker panel), it's running pretty bad (oil pressure issues)

 

all the parts are gone...he had to toss them all out due to family issues.
