not sure where to post this

today i stoped by a house where i saw a 2.5L 5speed jeep comanche long bed the bed was overflowing with trash and it had 4 flat tires. the truck was very dirty. As i walked up to it, a young woman walked up to me and i then inquired about the jeep. sadly she said it was her fathers and she didnt know much about it. So my questions for yall are:

#1 how can I tell what year a comanche is?

#2 i know that it is a comanche so it is automatically the best small truck to own but, is a 2.5L long bed going to be worth buying?

#3 about how much should i offer so that i don't insult the owner?

#1 how can I tell what year a comanche is? Get me the last 8 digits of the VIN or see if there is still a sticker on the drivers door or under the hood that you can still read.

#2 i know that it is a comanche so it is automatically the best small truck to own but, is a 2.5L long bed going to be worth buying? If it runs good and is not rusted to death, then yes, it would be worth buying.

#3 about how much should i offer so that i don't insult the owner? That is going to be determined by year, condition, running order etc, etc... Need a little more info to answer that.

cool i left a cc card with the girl. i put my name and number on it so maybe he will call me and have some info.

it looked so sad just sitting there with all flat tires, the truck was so dirty it kind looked like mold was growing on the paint, and like i said the bed (a long bed) was way over filled with junk and trash. full to the point to where the poor thing was squatting like 4-5 inches. a sad sight :(

for the model year, look at the emissions sticker on the firewall above the C101 connector. Big rectangular white sticker with the vaccuum diagram on it. The sentence at the top left side of the sticker lists the year.

is there no way to tell just by looking at it

yes, you open the door and look at the sticker on the inside of the door, or open the hood and look at the sticker on the driver's side firewall.

those will tell year.

you may have a viable reason to keep the engine, trans, and wiring from your old comanche

Well, there is a couple of things that would hint to the year.

If it has the all cap COMANCHE badge, most likely it's an 86. Some people change to these so it's not 100%. If it has the X or XLS under the badge, than I would say it probably was an 86.

If it has any of the pioneer or sport truck decals, it's not an 86.( I don't think anyone would go to the trouble of putting these on an 86)

If it has the olympic decals, it's an 88. Only year offered and again I don't think anyone would go to the trouble of putting those on.

86's were all LWB so that doen't help here but if it was a SWB you know what it's not.

86 header firewall is different unless it's a real late production 86.

If the owners manual is in the glove box, that may give you a hint.

Just a couple of clues off the top of my head. There's more out there but most of them just eliminate years, not indentify the exact year.

I bought a running, pretty solid '86 4-cyl 4-speed for $100. I paid $500 for an '88 4-cyl 5-speed with a solid bed. I probably paid too much for that one. That may give you some guidance as to price range.

:agree: with the rest of the group.

You might want to hang on to your frame damaged MJ just a little bit to see what you can find

As Mvusse wrote, you will not like the 2.5 after screaming all over town with the 4.0 :brows:

And right now......you have the perfect vehicle for a 4.0 transplant :D

If you can pick up the one you seen for $300 - 500, then you have a deal.

Isnt the hood prop a indication of the year too?? There was two styles, one on the passenger fender and one long one on the rad support..

JT......you done did it again :D

Yea......'86 and '87 had the long prop rod that laid across the upper radiator support.

But then.........while you have the hood propped open.....then you can check the emissions tag

Why don't you just look in the windshield at the VIN #. Or open the drivers door & check it.

Look at the tenth digit in the VIN. G is an 86, H is 87, J is 88, K is 89, L is 90, M is 91, N is 92. Leters I & O were not used. :dunno:
