I may have taken the wrong advice...

Recommended Posts

 Ok so me and a friend were sitting in my 87' Mj he was fiddling around with the steering when it locked. I was never given a key when I bought it due to it working without it, now I was really mad at the time :fs1: , but I knew my buddy was really good with Google and trusted that he'd find and way to solve this problem.

The next day he called me and said most people with Xjs and Mjs that don't need the key and have locked there steering go to the dealer and have a key made, or the grab that steering wheel and turn it and break that son ah B, well I called the Dealer and they said that it was to old to make one from the vin :hmm: . So I grab that wheel and broke it.

I could now steer it :D BUt then I realized that I couldnt turn the ignition key, OH KNOW!! :???: SO I was hoping that one of you experts could help me out, what you did, what you know people did, what can work, or just your thoughts on my situation compared to similar situations you had.

Thanks everybody :wavey:

 Oh wow everybody thanks a lot, that link helped out but I kind of like the idea of a switch start..hmm bigd44889 you think maybe you could send me some Fo instructions for how to do it, I like that idea. I just bought all the switches that go in the dash but obviously I don't need a power transmission switch or a heated back window since I don't have either :D so I'd like to use those and get that done, so I'll prob Pm you but THANKS EVERYBODY!!!! :waving:

oh jeepco its not getto its hillbilly not all of us are perfict and i have held a key on over and over in big rock gardins i like the button alot easyer in fingers

ps we don't all drive sreet trucks :fs1: :fool:

it's hillbilly when you break the column to get it done. the switch is not the ghetto part, it's the manner in which it's done.

and, IDK if you've noticed, but the truck I've currently got is NOT a street truck. hell, I haven't even taken it to the paint booth...and it will probably stay that way.

one is street, one is wheeling, and both are clean, with everything set properly and modified in a professional manner. hack jobs are just that, and a complete waste of time. they are the reason I get these trucks so cheap when the improvised hack jobs fail, and the PO gives up, lets it rot, and the vehicle ends up in such bad repair I have no choice but to scrap it.

booty fab is the precursor to a junk vehicle, or injured people.

I completely agree with Pat on this one!!

There is an old saying: NEVER time to do it right... but there ALWAYS seems to be time to do it all OVER! Think about it, do it right the FIRST TIME and move on.

don't judge a book by its cover, There are many many jeep owners that take the time to keep there vehicles clean and in good working order. Dents and wrinckled sheetmetal, do not make for a better driver. Slow as you can fast as you have to and tread lightly are the ways to drive offroad. Forget about drive it like you stole it, thats just plain stupid. I'm not taklin about spinning arround a mud pit, thats fun. I am talking about point and shoot, pedal to the floor, to hell with the consiquences but I'll get to the top, kinda attitude.

I also agree with Jeepco. It's one thing to REPLACE the stock ignition with a toggle switch and push button because you want it that way. It's a very different matter to throw in a booty-fab switch because some idiot wrecked your steering column. You have no idea what broke inside that column, so you now have no idea if/when the steering may decide to lock up on you when driving.

Disabling something in a known and controlled manner is different from breaking it.

IMHO your friend owes you a steering column.

Dude, relax. Take a breath sit down and listen. The comments where made in an effort to HELP you from FURTHER PROBLEMS!!!

Pat may have come off a bit harsh, but Some times a different tact is necessary to get someones attention. Pat has been there and done that and now knows and speaks from experience, cobbled together crap causes more problems than it fixes. We ARE nice, that's why we commented and offered help. If I didn't care I would just stand here and laugh and point.. "Look at what this idiot tried to do he he he eh ha aha ha" That's not what happened.

Whats happening here is we are growing up. Realizing that everything worth doing is worth doing right... ONCE the first time. It leaves more time for really fun stuff like WHEELING or having a beer with a bud!!

Like Eagle told you, cobbling something together with junk left over that's not broken, Just to get that offroad-only jeep back on the street, is FAR different then laying out a starting system that uses a push button start.
