Redramman
6cyl 5spd transmission,is it differant than a 4cyl trans??? Both Comanches are 1990. I have a 2WD 4cyl with AX5 I know someone with a 2WD 6cyl 5spd and I wonder if they use the same trans possibly.I am under the immpression that they don't use same trans. He lives about 45 miles away and is not sure what trans he has.
Pete M
Yes, they are different and not interchangeable. (unless you find a 4cyl Dakota bellhousing, but that's a whole other can o' worm)

JeepcoMJ
Yes, they are different and not interchangeable. (unless you find a 4cyl Dakota bellhousing, but that's a whole other can o' worm) this is true...if the 6 cylinder is a 4.0. IF the 6 cylinder 5 speed combination you are looking at getting is a 2.8 liter v6 from an 84-86 cherokee, or 86 comanche, then it is nearly 90% likely the same transmission. the only variance could be that it could have a T5 instead of an AX5 (jeep ran out of AX5's at one point and made a substitution). so, you're looking for any 4 cylinder jeep transmission (2.5 liter), or a 2.8 v6 jeep transmission (AX5)
carnuck
Could also be an SR5 or SR4
Geonovast
He said they're both 90s, so it we should be talking about an AX-5 and AX-15. Unless, of course, someone put a 2.8 in place of the 4.0... As for the bell housing, should probably clarify that a 93+ Dakota bellhousing will let an AX-15 mate up to a 2.5 4cyl, but not an AX-5 to a 4.0. JeepcoMJ
Could also be an SR5 or SR4 never even heard of those, much less seen them in a jeep. only seen ax5/ax4 and t5 but no t4...and that's with parting a few 84-86's and many renix-era's geonovast, I missed the year mark. don't bother with the AX15 upgrade...I cannot even begin to find a bellhousing for mine, and I need one badly. carnuck
oops! Someone mentioned 2.8 and I thought about the 2wd trans used in AMCs with the Iron dookie and CJs (or was it just YJs?) with 2.
Eagle
I don't think the YJ ever had the 2.8L. It was either the AMC 2.5L 4-cyl or the 258/4.2L AMC I-6. The Iron Duke was used in some years of the Eagle/Hornet/Concord. Dunno if it ever made it into the CJ.
carnuck
I've seen the 2.5 GM motor in '78-80 CJs (the trans is sought after because the bolt pattern is same as SBC) and the bolt pattern changed in '82ish is 60 degree V6 to match the 2.8 (2.5 was also used in some Postal Jeeps of the time along with the Audi/VW/Porsche 2.0L) I think only the YJs got the 2.8L in '86. carnuck
It may be only the Canadian model YJs got the 2.8 V6 in '86/

Redramman
2WD , I'll have to get my Son to show me how to put pictures on I can't even get the computer to acknowledge that the camera is pluged in :headpop:
JeepcoMJ
2WD , I'll have to get my Son to show me how to put pictures on I can't even get the computer to acknowledge that the camera is pluged in :headpop: riddle me this; how is the cross shaft? this is the lower shaft which has gears permanently attached to it. tell me which gear you need, and what number it is on the shaft (i.e. 2nd forward from the midplate), and tell me how your cross shaft and synchro looks. if you get decent pics, you can email them to me at snow_freak20@hotmail.com if you'd like. that may be easier. I've wrecked 3 or 4 ax5's and I have two good ones here, and all of the gears in front of the midplate are the same. I only have one set of shifter forks for a 5 speed, but it's a complete set. do you have the means to pull the gears (rather, to press them) off of the shaft? if not, I could make this easier and just build you a good gear cluster and send you that with a good cross shaft if you'd send me back your damaged cluster and cross shaft plus some cash. I'd get to this in about two weeks.
carnuck
Someone from here wrote me about posting pics, but their email program gives noreply@comancheclub.com as return address? Kellena Moedt asked how to post pics. The way to do it now is to open a Comanche Club Image Hosting account and then use their link system to post up. Pete M
If someone sends an email directly from this site, it shows up with the generic email address (it used to show up with my email addy but I got too many replies that didn't have anything to do with me so I had to change it). But when I get an email like you did, all I have to do is hit the reply button in Hotmail and it puts the persons real email address in the To: spot. Does that not happen with your email service? carnuck
Nope! I get noreply@comancheclub.com
Pete M
Interesting. What email service are you using? I guess I'm thankful it tells you who sent it. That way you can at least reply with a PM.
carnuck
I'm on hotmail using Firefox. Prior to the latest upgrade it would automatically change the email address. Same thing is happening when I reply to yahoogroups now. I have to open a new email because it won't allow me to change the original "replyto:" line. I can add more but can't remove the original. Pete M
Curiouser and curiouser. I'm using the same and don't have that hiccup. :hmm:
