xjblue
listen to this - local forum guy selling an AX5 and NP231 I know the T-case fits a cherokee, that's what I have now in mine. But I have a pugot transmission for a 4.0L. The bolt pattern for the bell housing is about 2" off for the AX5 (which would work if I had a 2.5L or moded with an adapter for a 4.0L). Also I'd have to change out my clutch because the AX5 uses an external slave cylinder. I'd have to get the fork also to use with my set up. Again if I had a 2.5L, this wouldn't be an issue Me being lazy ends up being a steal for you ... $250 for both or $150 for each part. I'd like to see them go together. he didn't directly answer my question regarding wether they came from a 2.5l equpped jeep or not... how can I tell and if so is it going to bolt right in like I think it would?? This would be my first tranny tcase purchase, just don't want to go into it more blind than I have to...
BRC 88MJ
I'm pretty sure that an AX-5 only came in the 2.5L. The 4.0L had an AX-15, B/A-10, or an NV3550 (late-model). Anyone else, correct if I'm wrong....
mjeff87
AX4/5's only came behind the 2.5 and the 2.8. Never behind a 4.0L Good price for them, too. Here's a pic of an AX5: Image Not Found Jeff
Bounty Hunter
Sounds like it's a drivetrain for a 2.5L, must be '94+ since it has the better external clutch slave.

87manche
you'll need all the parts in the bellhousing. And you'll have to use a compression fitting to mate the external slave to your clutch hose. Pete has done the external slave AX-15 and it's probably quite similar, he may chime in.
Pete M
My 86 MJ has an external slave AX-5. The "1994.5" cuttoff is specific to the AX-15.
xjblue
cool, looks like I'm first in line to get them! Thanks for the quick replies. Goal to have her ready for the NAXJA Fall Fling is looking pretty good.

Pete M
Sure looks external to me. Honestly, I don't spend much time under the 86. I'll snap a pic tomorrow.
xjblue
Now I've got someone who was the owner 3 owners ago telling me they came out of a 2.8L XJ, he was told the trans was brand new and the tcase rebuilt. These things have changed hands a bit it sounds like.

All the older AX5's I've seen were internal slave. My 86 Ax5 is external slave, it was behind a 2.8L. In shopping for replacement clutches it looks like 86 2.5L and 2.8L were external slave, where as 88 Ax4 and Ax5 (I took out an Ax4) was internal. If you look up a clutch kit the externals come with a throwout bearing and the internals come with a new slave cylinder.
xjblue
My concern now is, since it was behind a 2.8l, is it going to want to bolt up to my 2.5l without too much trouble or....
jage
I just put an 86 AX5 from my 2.8L with the external slave into my 88 2.5L comanche which had the internal slave and was an AX4. Sounds like exactly the same thing you want to do. I used the clutch kit for an 86 2.5L as the throwout bearing for the 2.8L was taller than the throwout bearing for the 2.5L. I verified this with a Jeep parts guy who was very helpful. The flywheel was original to the 2.5L and got resurfaced and replaced. I haven't bled the slave cylinder so I can't verify 100% that the throwout bearing is correct from personal experience, but everything bolted right up and slid right in (well no harder than anything else). Eagle
My concern now is, since it was behind a 2.8l, is it going to want to bolt up to my 2.5l without too much trouble or.... Yes, the 2.8L and early 2.5L used an external slave cylinder, and yes a tranny from a 2.8L will bolt directly to a 2.5L block. The 2.5L engine was designed to accept the same bell housing as the 2.8L V6.
