thinking about a conversion

So i may have a diesel driveline from a new liberty or grand cherokee drop into my hands here soon. i am positive its 4x4 not sure if its auto or manual. my friend had it in his jeep and it got totalled out for some reason i can't remember what he said. But how hard would it be to drop the entire engine, tranny, and transfer case and get it running? I know new gas tank and lines will have to be run but what else?

Electrical....

Ugh.

the wiring harness should come with it as long as he didn't hack it all up. i may even upgrade to digital gauges. I did forget to mention that whenever i do finally pick my comanche up it does not have a running engine. but i do have an extra laying around that i was going to use but am leaning to the diesel if i can get it to work.

x2 on electrical

Everything else should be relatively easy if it fits.

Motor mounts might cause a lil grief, exhaust isn't hard, fuel cells are good, driveshafts'll need modding or replacing.

If you've got the time and effort, with a lil bit of money, anything's possible.

Well on top of the obvious problem of, just getting the engine to run in a new vehicle. I would strongly suggest getting the whole vehicle, and then pulling the complete wiring harness, and motor. The Liberty T-case is a rather weak and problem prone thing that doesn't last very long 4 wheeling.

There are also suspension issues, as the diesel engine weighs considerably more.

Then Lastly there are smog issues. even though the new diesel is a cleaner burning motor, there might be issues with it passing smog cause of the visual inspection aspect. If this is a non issue, then you are good, but as more states have to put up with the Feds stringent clean air act, smog testing is coming to a city near you with time

will the 231 that i have mate to the engine?

suspension is no problem since i will lift it anyways!

as to smog. i don't think we have the testing but i could be wrong. but around here our full size diesel trucks love to show how much black smoke they can produce all over the place. and since it did come from a new jeep i think it might be smog legal. And i may just make it my trail rig but I'm not sure yet.

ok, you gotta couple important things to consider here:

first off, you gotta find out the smog/emissions laws in your state regarding your jeep and diesel. in Georgia, metro counties are required to pass certain emission standards, but diesels are exempt.

in the case of an engine swap, the BODY of the vehicle is what the emission folks go by. so in your case (if you were in GA) your MJ would still be required to pass. on the other hand, if you take a volvo turbo diesel and swap in a small block chevy, it is not required to pass because the body is registered as diesel. so you really need to figure out how you will get around the smog situation.

the liberty transfer cases should be the NP242 and the NP231, which are labeled selec-trac and command-trac. both are very similar to the units used in XJs. the 242 is not inferior to the np231, but it does have less aftermarket support. the np242 is an awesome transfer case, my brother runs one in his XJ.

let us know what you find out.

I absoutely love driving my friend's CRD! It's fun to drive and I can get 25mpg towing 2000 lbs worth of trailer. :D And the Jeep didn't even notice the extra weight when accelerating into traffic. We'll see in a couple weeks how well it tows my MJ around.
