Couple Questions

Recommended Posts

First off, does anyone know of safari style doors for an MJ/XJ? I want some for my rig. Next, I am buying an MJ long box for a parts vehicle...but on second though i think I might restore it, army style paint it, and use it as a DD, and get another MJ as a daly driver. Is the 6 cyl, 5 spd manual combo worth it gas wise? keep in mind I live in Canada and gas is even more expensive over here then in the states. Thanks.

Where about do you live?

My 4.0/5spd gets pretty decent milage. My driving habits and tire size are really the main issue though. For a true DD only I'd probably get a gutless 4cyl. But they're pretty boring. The 4.0 at least lets you have some fun.

The renix style FI is known to get decent gas mileage with the proper gearing and tires. I had an XJ with the 4.0 and the 5spd and it wasn't uncommon for it to average 24-25 MPG but keep in mind i am the grandpa style driver that everyone hates to get behind. I take off slowly, and hardly ever go faster the 60MPH

I live in windsor, which is directly south of detroit. I am basically as american as a canadian can get because there is a huge american influence over here.

I drive like a little sissy with my DD that I have now, keep in mind that it is a 3cyl pontiac firefly and even if I did beat on it it wouldn't make a difference. I just really love trucks. when it came to offorading, i fell in love...more of like a stalker kind of love i guess...with the MJ. and now that I have found this website and seem some other rigs, its getting worse.

But i want an mj for a daily driver, and i think the long box looks good. hwere can i find this Renix? what year/model comanche?

'88 MJ 4.0L 5-speed. I get about 18 MPG around town with a high of 22 MPG highway (at legal speeds). A friend just got 23 MPG on a 300 mile trip at 75 MPH (he says -- I'm skeptical).

'88 XJ 4.0l 5-speed, even with 255,000 miles on it I get about 22 or 23 MPG highway. Best ever was 28 MPG when it was a couple of years old.

A 2.5L 5-speed will probably deliver slightly better gas mileage overall, unless you live in mountains, but if you like to go anywhere in a hurry you won't be happy driving it.

My GF"s dad has a YJ with a 4 cyl in it and it was dog poop on the highway. Now we were driving it with a lift and on...i think 31's or his 33's but I was extreamly bitter with the gas mileage and the fact that we couldn't go over a 100 km/h (don't remember mi/h conversion). Now I know that the lift any everything makes a huge difference, but still, If I wanted to lift this DD and Jam some 31's underneath, I would still like to be able to drive. My friend alex's XJ has 35's and about 5 or 6 inches of lift and he is getting pretty much the same mileage he was getting stock, a little less, but not too bad. It took him a while to figure out the gearing though.

I drove a stock MJ with 31's, mileage with the stock 3.07s was OK. I got about 16 in town and about 22 on the highway.

Acceleration sucked.

The new 3.73's are much nicer to drive, but I don't have any mileage info yet since they just went under the truck.

if you plan on going to 33's I'd do 4.10's or 4.56's

You'll have to do some math. I know that with 31's 3.73 pretty much put me back to stock drive ratios, 4.10's would have been my choice, but I got a great deal on some axles already geared 3.73, and it's the most popular gear ratio for an 8.8 which is the direction I'll likely go next year.

3.73 is a hard ratio to find in a Dana 30. Might be why all the 3.73 8.8s are left behind. :D Oh, and 3.54, 3.73, and 4.10 were all offered behind the Ford v6 and the v8.

3:73 are a common TJ ratio with the 30" wheel package. But you don't find many of these in junk yards as yet. not to mention they are LO-PINION design D30's.

There are many tire clculators on the web, to figure out what tire and gear will work best for you. You have to take into account what kinda driving you do mostly, and whether or not you care about MPG, and if you ever plan on going to bigger tires.

I was pleased with 4.10's and 33's with an auto. I was more pleased in my street MJ that had 3.73, and 30's with a 5spd. IMHO, you are better going with a lower gear (higher #) then wishing you would have gone lower. You always can add bigger tires, and normally they are cheaper then setting up gears twice

alrite seems like I am running the same questions on two different threads lol

So which would you guys prefer? I want 33's on my trail rig. I was thinking the 4.56's because I can still drive it on the road, but I wasn't planning on highay driving n e way so i don't think it would be that big of an issue. Smart decision? Or would the 4.10 that's in the rear the job so that way I can just put a 4.10 in the front when I do 4X4 conversion? Then buy a set of 4.56's down the road. My heart is definately set on 33's

3.73 is an okay ratio with 31" tires if steert driving and fuel mileage are the primary criteria. 4.10s are a much better ratio if you plan to actually wheel it. For 33" tires you really won't be happy with less gear than 4.56.

Alrightly fella's, I'm being told that buying from Rusty's is a big NO NO. I really want to buy just one kit though and not have to do much modding. I wanted the long arm kit for its superior flex. But if there has been some problems with Rusty's stuff (other then customer service) it makes me kind of nervous. I want at least 6 inches of lift, I want to put 33's under the MJ with basically no trimming (if possible, I'm also being told it will never happen LOL)

What kit should I be looking at?? I thought I had it all figured out but I'm starting to doubt myself.

Please help, websites, info on what I should be looking at, ANYTHING!!!!

4.10's are what you wil find mostly in VA, or at least that is all myself and buddies have ben able to find

I am in Virginia, but my 1992 Comanche was originally purchased in upper-state New York. Anyway, I never changed the original factory 3.54 ratio when swapping the 35-C with that 1991 MJ DANA-44 which was also geared at 3.54. All I did was purchase the stocker 4.0-DANA-44-shortbox-3.54 driveshaft from the Jeep parts department and it was a direct plug & play. Even the factory axle u-bolts had universal holes for both the 35-C and DANA 44 axles...

I am not certain, but I believe that the DANA 44 rear axle was no longer an option that could be added in 1992...

I wish somebody'd told me that. I had great luck on my XJ with Rubicon Express 5.5" ZJ springs ... the ZJ front end is heavier so you get more lift. I ran that and lower control arms that had a bit of an elbow on the front end.

As for the back I don't know... I'm new to the back end of the 'manche.

And you know if you buy Rusty's kit you'll wind up piecing together a bunch of different stuff anyway as things don't fit and then others bend or break the first time out...

Good Luck!
