so, yesterday I was working on the 87 MJ and needed to weld a couple washers to my cheapo UCA's...and I did. but, i didn't have a proper welding mask 8) as my dad brought that to work with him.

so, i used a torch mask and that didn't work...put it away. don't have welding goggles, so i just closed my eyes and gave her hell...always being careful not to look towards the weld, and not start until my eyes were closed.

so, i'm a dumbass. my face is burnt even though i was looking away.

then, i ground down the welds using a bench-mount which has a wire wheel and a fine grinding wheel. for that, I DID put on safety glasses. i didn't notice anything get in my eyes at all, didn't feel anything.

went up to the house real late, went to sleep around midnight, woke up at 2:30am with tears running and a stuffy nose, and something gritty in my eyes. damn.

couldn't get it out with eye drops or anything, tried flipping my eyelids and wiping since they weren't on my eye. couldn't get it. so i decide to take a bath and see if i can clear my eyes by dunking and blinking. needless to say, this didn't work...well (it did help) and i decided taking a bath and reading a book might help...using my eyes would cause my eyes to water, thus helping to flush out the junk. that actually worked a bit, then flipped lids finished it off. stupid grinding wheel grit got me.

for awhile there i was thinking i burned my cornea with flash, but that didn't make any sense because i didn't even look at the flash...thank god it's not.

anyways, moral of the story, use proper safety equipment and save yourself the trouble. it's 4:45am and i'm going to bed now to wake up at 7:30am :headpop:

 Dude...that sucks. I was really thinking that you had flash burn as well from your description. I have never had it, but a few of my frineds have and they described it just the same way as you just did.

Hope you get a little rest as it is 6:00 AM and you are hopefully still sleeping.

Pat,, That isnt grit in your eye,, its where you burnt a small tiny hole in your cornea from welding.. I'd say it probably happened when you were using the torch shield the first time. About the only thing I know what you can do is just take some meds that'll knock you out and try your best to sleep it off.. I've also heard of putting half of a potato on your eyes to draw the burn out,,, folklore thing I guess......

Dude, go see an eye DR... When I had my laser eye surgery (PRK and not Lasik, so they zapped the tops instead of cutting a flap), I had pain releif eye drops that worked really well...

Sorry this happened to you! Don't like to see anyone get hurt...

Everybody's giving you a hard time, but I'm impressed. I thought welding upside down was tough. Shoot, you weld without looking. How did it come out?

lol. it went fine...i only had to weld a couple of washers to the metal, and you can hear how it's welding.

mind you, i'm NOT a welder and am not very good at it
