  1. I've been giving this thing a bit more thought, and what I'm looking to accomplish is a spare that has the same rolling diameter as the other wheels, so that I can run it in 4WD without stressing the diffs. If the diameter of the spare fits in the available space, and weight is the only matter of concern, then I should be fine if I come up with any appropriate wheel/tire combo that has the right diameter, and matches (or reduces) the weight of the stock spare, right? A narrow width spare on a narrow alloy rim, and possibly stored uninflated (since I always carry a pump) would be one possibility.
  2. If the rest of your exhaust system is stock, I'm not sure why the header would affect the back pressure. :???:
  3. Bedmount is not an option with my camper. I'll look into the weight issues. Thanks
  4. Now that I have 31/10.5/15s on my SWB MJ, I'd like to match them with a spare that's larger than stock. Anyone know whether that tire diameter will fit into the stock spare tire carrier without fouling? I'll probably just mount the larger tire on the stock spare rim, rather than an 8" rim. I know I can crawl under and measure, but it's late, and I'm lazy. :brows: Thanks.
  5. Great, thanks! I zeroed in on the 4029 from another website, so that looks right, and it's a 50-state compliant cat, so that works for me. :clapping:
  6. Sure they do. http://store.summitracing.com/egnsearch ... 3&D=303153 But unless I'm reading it wrong, that's only for the I4 and the V6, not the 4.0L. :dunno:
  7. Found Catco elsewhere, but noticed that a lot of the converters offered to fit the MJ are "not to be used on Kalifornistan registered vehicles." Catco doesn't say, so I guess I need to dig deeper. WTF?
  8. Oops. 4.0. I'd better put some detail in my sigline I guess. That's all real helpful! Thanks mucho! Edit: Just checked Summit and they no longer list Catco. Now it's Dynomax.
  9. This may not belong in Tech, but: I'm thinking of replacing everything from the cat to the exhaust tip, as I may have mucked up the cat with a healthy dose of leaded fuel  and the muffler has a hole in it (and wasn't installed very well anyway). The remaining pipe shows the effects of the 300K miles that the MJ has accumulated. Any recommendations (brand or source) for replacement cat and muffler? Any idea what I should expect to pay? Should I look for a stock pipe, or just have fresh piping built by the local muffler shop. They do good but pricey work. If so, what size to maintain appropriate back pressure? Thanks.
  10. Why would you need to do that? Generally, you just recharge the battery, and it makes its own acid. I'm confused.
  11. Weekend update: I was just getting ready to pull the trigger on a set of Cragar Soft 8s, and checked CL one last time. There was an ad for a set of Jeep stock rims, 15X8 with stock BS. Don't know what model they were from, but they look like the black "D" window Uniques, and have a black plastic insert/hub cover with the Jeep logo. The good news is they also came with BFG 31/10.5s with about 40-50% tread left (tho they are ~6 years old). Total price was $140. I just mounted them on the MJ and all frame/body clearances look good (though I might end up rubbing on the LCAs when I get going. So it looks like I'll run these down a bit, and then switch to the ProComps and keep the best BFG as a spare. Anyone want a set of stock Jeep alloy wheels? :brows: BTW this is what the tire looked like that I blew down in Baja for the Baja500:
  12. Thanks. I'll take a look. Edit: I just looked, and there was nothing fresh, but thanks for the tip.
  13. I'm tending to agree on the used rims. It'll be a couple of days more, but the Cragar Soft 8 397s from Summit are looking like the way to go.
  14. So far, Summit Racing seems to have the best deal for new. About $38@ and only $12 total shipping if I'm reading it right. For used, I've looked locally, but nothing on CL and the local Jeep Yonke (yes, there's only one) is never a bargain.
  15. Soft 8s is what I was looking at. I'll keep an eye open for used.
  16. I'm considering a set of new rims for some virtually new ProComp 31/10.5/15s that I got really cheap. Sticking with the cheap plan I've been looking at some Cragar steel rims at @ $50 each. Probably go with 15X8 and 4" BS, as I've got a 4" lift, so clearance should be okay. Any opinions on the quality of the rims? Any better suggestions? I'll probably buy locally, to avoid shipping. Any ORW-type chain stores carry them?
  17. No stripes IMO.
  18. I thought the old timers just turned up the wick on the kerosene lamp. ;) That's for headlamps. (There's a reason the technical name is head"lamp"s) When I was a young tad, my dad had a bike with an acetylene head lamp. Pretty cool.

  20. I also bowled when I was young, more years ago than I'd like to recall. Started at age 6-7, and ended @ age 12-13. Average in leagues was @ 190, and high game was 298. My shirt is covered with patches and badges, and my daughter wore it a lot to high school a couple of years back. Doesn't fit me anymore. :brows: It's apparently become kewl again!
  21. Must have been an amazing run all the way! BJ was leading Post when they came past our pit, but given the time differential in their start times (BJ 09:37:00 vs Post 09:36:00) vs. the end times (BJ 18:47:47 vs. Post 18:46:54), Post passed BJ in the last 110 miles, and crossed the line first, but not by quite enough to make up that last seven seconds! A-@#$%ing-Mazing!!!
  22. Indeed, the Jeep yonkes around here suck bigtime. You always need to ask for every little detail before you start pulling, and the prices aren't particularly reasonable compared to other sources. I'm still not going to steal from them though.
  23. Good one!!!
  24. A Comanche-based TT would be way kewl! I'll have to talk to PAB about that. We were at Punta Cabras. The Geiser TT #36 was 1st thru CP1 and placed 7th in class, 16th OA (8 damn flat tires), but Heidi won in 7SX so a good day over all. The TT will make podium soon, once the tire issue is resolved. Bad news when you rip the skin off your tires just by hitting the go pedal, but that's what 800hp will do to you! :brows:
  25. I suspect the same is true of mine. It rarely reads above 160 in normal use, and never above 210, even in the desert with full load uphill.
