JeepcoMJ, According to OEM manual, 3.54:1 would be 46 count on ring, 13 count on pinion. This is from7/85 mj manual. The 3.55:1 will work also if you have one. I blew out 3 sets of spider gears in my '86 w/a swapped in, modified HO (not stroker), last set I took out destroyed the carrier. I put in 4.10/4.11 combo out of an '86 xj which I rebuilt w/brgs.,R&P, etc. & for 2 yrs now no trouble. My mj is 4wd L/B & Idrive it hard. I do have oem manuals if you need info for set-up. mjcanaoe

chopper56, You can check frt. diff. for tag. If that is not there use this formula straight from OEM manual, count the ring/pinion tooth combination: 2.73:1 will have 41 teeth on ring gear, 15 teeth on pinion gear. 3.07:1 = 43/14 3.31:1 = 43/13 3.55:1 = 39/11 3.73:1 = 41/11 4.11:1 = 37/9 They did run 4.10/ 4.11 together as the difference was allowable, I have this combo in my mj & it is oem. hope this helps. mjcanoe

hornbrod, You are right about that! Is that your mj in avatar? if so looks good. By the way, what section of N/A you in? I love to camp & wheel over there. Last vist was Bankhead N/F for some camping & canoeing, had to "roadtest" my latest canoe, a solo rig. Take care, mjcanoe -

hornbrod, You're right, those 225 cid's were stout motors. I still prefer the 242cid/4.0 tho. 4.0 easier to maintain, no manual valve adjustment, did a lot of that during my Renault days. By the way, the only other car that would cause me to break my vow of fidelity to my mj would be a Renault 8 Gordini. Never should have sold mine back in the mid 70's. mjcanoe -

87manche, I think I remember I saw that once. I'd rather find some way to keep my hood line clean, except for my ZJ Limited hood vents($50.00 score!). Don't like big "bumps" on my hood. Sidebar: years ago Renault had a s/w, 18 I w/2.2L. R&D put a s/c on one, quick like a scalded dog, but "bump" was almost 4.5" high. Bad case of the uglies for me. But, if another option available, I'll try. Probably end up building my own. One time, as a young lad I turned a GM air pump into a s/c on 1100cc Renault Dauphine. Another era & time. Had fun tho. mjcanoe -

JOMJ87, I've looked @ those too. Always wondered if kit for tj's could be adapted to mj/xj, since underhood space is less then tj. Maybe one day, since I love to modify. mjcanoe -

DirtyComanche, Thanks for reply. As I mentioned, the addition of spacer was least impressive of my mods. I did not notice decrease in torque w/other mods/add-ons, so who knows w/out a dynomometer. I can't afford one, or a test right now. I usually don't run mine past 5-5200 rpm as I still run stock injectors & fuel pump.(so far). Take care. mjcanoe -

led_balloon, Plenty of items you can spend $ on. As mentioned in other thread, I have been VERY pleased w/ '99 intake manifold OEM#53010237, list@ 215.00 last look, cheaper if you can get @ cost or wholesale. I think I paid $145.00 3 yrs. ago. I opened up my t/body & was also VERY pleased. Exhaust was fair until I put Tri-Y headers on. Least impressive was t/b spacer, about $50.00 from Summit. All of the above improved the torque of the motor as well as throttle response. And I always get a consistant 18.5 MPG, even loaded down w/camp gear, canoe, mtn. bikes. Gear ratio is important based on tire size you run & there is a difference between a/t & manual trans. that needs to be considered. A/T's are a little for "forgiving" I think. mjcanoe -
Cold air intake/ duel exhaust
mjcanoe replied to led_balloon's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
led_balloon, I did it again! 2.5 is different size a/filter, but when I did my swap the housing did bolt up to fender well on my '86. Sorry. mjcanoe -
Cold air intake/ duel exhaust
mjcanoe replied to led_balloon's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
led_balloon, Air box is usable/compatible even tho they changed sometime in '91/92 from earlier yrs. Just make sure you get matching top & bottom. They flex hose on '87-'90 4.0's are for Renix fuel systems. The '91 up are for 4.0 HO's. the air box will fit both flex hoses. My suggestion on duals is only my opinion based on my desire initially to have it on mj when I did 2.5 to 4.0 swap. I declined due to $ factor & went with what was mentioned b-4. High flow cat. & muffler, I run a '99 I/manifold(equal length runners), bored out T/body, T/B spacer & tri-Y headers, all of which were installed after exhaust system mentioned. Each add-on has given me "seat of the pants" improvement. Hope this helps. mjcanoe -
Eagle, Sorry about that. I kinda understand as my son has same phobia. One time we were camping/hiking & he saw a snake the same time the snake saw us. I still not sure which one "ran" away the fastest. No harm meant. mjcanoe
-
For what it's worth, that was a direct quote from the U.S. Government Peace Corps Manual to volunteers who work in tha Amazon Jungle as recited in the Portfolio Managers Weekly. mjcanoe

Eagle, thanks for clarification. As soon as I read it, I remembered, just had "clips" in mind. mjcanoe

Goverment Policy : Snake aAttack (for Peace Corps) 1) If you are attacked by an anaconda, do not run The snake is faster than you are. 2) Lie flat on the ground. Put your arms tight against your sides, your legs tight against one another. 3) Tuck your chin in. 4) The snake will come & begin to nudge & climb over your body. 5) Do not panic. 6) After the snake has examined you, it will begin to swallow you from the feet & always from the end. Permit the snake to swallow your feet & ankles. Do not panic. 7) The snake will now begin to suck your legs into its body. You must lie perfectly still. This will take a long time. 8) When the snake has reached your knees, slowly & with as little movement as possible, reach down, take your knife & very gently slide it into the side of the snake's mouth between the edge of its mouth & your leg, then suddenly rip upwards, severing the snake,s head. 9) Be sure to have your knife. 10) Be sure your knife is sharp.

Pete M, Hey, I'm sorry, I've been a mechanic for 35 + years. I guess I like tools & get carried away @ times. They have always treated me well in return. But, like you said, some things are obvious, like a paisley print shirt. Take care, mjcanoe

dakal, Upper cable had 2 tension lock tabs that could be compressed to release from head. These would break @ times due to age, etc. they had a "hook end" that locked into groove on the speedo head. You could, if you had $ upgrade to later year xj head & cable. Just a suggestion. mjcanoe
-
Great, One day I'll have to share w/you the story of this mj & me, a long & heartouching matter. Maybe we can share build-up/ conversion notes along w/our goals for our MJ's. mjcanoe
-
dakal, speedo head is metal, retaining clip is plastic. 2 options I've seen work: 1) locate speedo cable @ inside of firewall/bulkhead & after seating cable on speedo head attach a small hose clamp to cable w/slight tension on cable. 2) clean metal @ speedo head & inside of cable clip w/ "brake cleaner" using a Q-tip & then apply a light coat of Grey or black "RTV" to speedo head & let cure. A combo of both works also. Same vintage xj will also work. If you have C/C, just get upper cable, if not then you can use C/C cable w/ sensor left unplugged of course. mjcanoe

"what if" questions thread...
mjcanoe replied to JeepcoMJ's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
There are plugs made " for thus such an emergency " as Bugs Bunny once said. Check the back adds of a JP mag. Also the Plug can be used from what might be found @ a trans. reman shop, slips in the ID of seal & allows rotation of output shaft. mjcanoe -
comancheman, mjeff87 is on the mark, cheap, but effective. Done it for others myself. I eventually went to cable actuated. Advantage of wasshers is no worry about loss of vacuum line in deep brush. mjcanoe

Gas Tank relocate? Has anyone?
mjcanoe replied to BARILLMS's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
BARILLMS, I"ve not done it on my MJ, but on others. You can contact JEGS, SUMMIT, or other speed shops for a certified fuel cell that might fit your needs. As long as you use f/pump with proper PSI specs & secure cell & route lines safely, no problems. You may want to consider a barrier or safety wall of some kind if you carry a lot in your bed. mjcanoe -
Pete M, That's so true, considering the vent @ frt. is probably 3/8 to 7/16 th ID as opposed to 2.2mm @ccv. If you have high mileage, would be good to do comp./leakdown test. Snap-On also offered a blow-by dection tool, maybe someone in your local has one. It was simple & efficent to use. mjcanoe
