Another AX-15 swap thread.
Knucklehead97 replied to Knucklehead97's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
this is what I found when I just pulled the drain plug. About a cup of water and a cup of black gear oil. The magnet was covered in a fine metal powder and a sludg at the bottom of the tranny when I stuck my finger in the hole. I'm guessing I need to bring it back? This sucks, this thing only has 130k on it. Edit: Got the full scoop on this thing. The place said it came out of a running driving Cherokee that was rear ended. It had been out of the Jeep and outside for about 2 months. That was a paper plates worth of 50/50 water and oil. No rust or foam from what I saw. The sludge at the bottom of the tranny was 99% dirt and some metal dust. Just enough metal dust to cause a little sparkle on my finger. No chunks at all. It takes a little umf to put the tranny into each gear, but shouldn't that be expected with no oil in it? When the input shaft is spun with my hand in every gear it doesn't make much sound. Spins smoothly with ease depending on which gear. I really don't want to take this one back but I will if I have to, but I also don't want to be out an AX-15... opinions? -

The output shaft was probably dry looking because I have spun through the gears with both it and the input shaft, making sure they would spin in all gears. -

I think it sat outside for a month or so.. I was worried about that as well. Theres a 30 day warranty on the trans, and I'm working on getting it installed this Friday or next Friday due to that. Looking inside through the holes everything looks good. No rust inside from what I could see. Seems everything still has a coating of gear oil on it. I'm going to pull the drain plug and see if anything comes out tomorrow. What worries should I have for it? -

I've researched and heard of a LOT of people using conventional 10w30 and loving it? I'm confused haha. There wasn't even anyone using synthetic from what I saw. -

Well the Tcase is only 100$ so I'll just take that 5 minutes to change the gear haha. I'll grab a few quarts of regular and synthetic and change it, drive up the road, and change it again. Also will pick up the output shaft seal to change. Where the heck is the vent hole on this thing? There isn't one like on my BA10. And on the subject of tcase shift linkages, I've seen people talk about some aftermarket supplier that makes linkages out of heims joints and completely gets rid of the stock linkage? It was like $40 for a kit, but I forgot the name. -

I've actually heard that 10w30 is most recommended for the AX-15. Do you think the dirt that fell in will cause any problems? And do I just tap the seal in? Sorry, completely new to this -

That's exactly what I thought. And the way it's opened up it looks like it was shot from the inside. Any idea about the tranny flush or the output seal. I'm lost on this lol -

Got the tranny. Going to have to weld on a new shift knob connector because they cut the original one off. It's from a rear ended Cherokee. Every gear spins with my hand at the speeds I would think it should. How do you perform a tranny flush? Some dirt got in the transmission because the whole that the shifter goes in had mud in it. Also it needs an output shaft seal, how do I change that? Picking up a 231 from a 91 auto Tuesday. Pictures next. -

The guy has an automatic 231 listed from a 91 for 150$. I'm going to try and pick it up too because the speedo would be cable still. An automatic Tcase will fit an AX-15 right? -

Dang, the guy had already sold the Tcase. Time to start searching again. That sucks, he only wanted $100 for it. -

The bushing is .754 ID and the alignment tool is 3/4 so that alignment tool SHOULD work. -

I will have to change the PB. They changed in 91. My three big questions are 1: if I get a newer TCase what will I have to do with it to make it work? Like how do I get my cable driven spedometer to work with an electric spedometer Tcase? 2: is that correct alignment tool? And 3: should I change my brand new slave cylinder again or leave it? Gotta get this parts list finished up haha. -

If I had to change the PB would this be the alignment tool that I need? -

A PB for the 304 V8 is only 7$ shipped on Rockauto. I have no problem buying it, just gotta figure out if I NEED it. -

I heard the change of PB was in 92? I'm thinking I may just find a new Tcase to save the trouble of taking mine apart... Will one from an AW4 work? And what year should I look for so I still have a cable driven speedo? I'm trying to get a mind of what all to order with this thing but geez, so much comes into factor with this swap. -

I'm a little tight on money right now, which is why I was planning to use my current crossmember with a drop to it. With a 92 will I need a different pilot bearing? If so, which one do I need? I have a lot of questions about this so I do it right the first time lol -
Picking up an AX-15 Friday for 150$. Internal slave, 130k miles on it. I plan to use my current T-case, of course. How hard is changing the input shaft? And where can I get an input shaft for cheap? Other than those parts... What do I need? I want to use my current crossmember and add a spacer to the crossmember to account for the bigger size of the AX-15, how much of a spacer do I need to add and how should I mount the crossmember? I know theres a second set of mounting holes further back that you use, but are they threaded? I just changed my slave and clutch... literally JUST changed them. Should I change the slave again for any reason? Will my current driveshafts still work? Just a good walkthrough would be appreciated. I would search... but I've been up 27 hours and only can sleep 5 hours before work haha. I appreciate any replies, thanks!!!

Axle swap and gearing question.
Knucklehead97 replied to Knucklehead97's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
They didn't. I bought them off another guy... these 235's look great though. I'm very happy with them. But, on the drive home, I found that my fifth gear is making a very loud chattering noise... sooo.... I guess it's time to start looking for an ax-15? It didn't make the noise before my clutch change, so must of been the gear oil change I did. Even though the transmission only had a quart of oil in it. -

I would love to! Gonna be a while before I do the swap though, probably. Got so much other stuff in line for the Jeep. And well, I'm at the tire shop right now... I misread the tire code. It was 11 years, not 4...
