Replacing the clutch
Knucklehead97 replied to Knucklehead97's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
the photo's didn't appear? But I appreciate all the replies! I'm going to search and see if a buddy has a transmission jack. How much is a resurfacing and how can I tell if I need one? I watched a 30 minute YJ clutch change video and he didn't have to take his out at all. And the most important question... whats the best clutch to get? I've been looking at the Luk pro Gold performance clutch. It"s supposedly heavy duty but I keep hearing that I shouldn't get a heavy duty clutch for a daily driver. Opinions? -
No. You can use it to tack it in the correct position, then have welded by a 220V welder for proper penetration.I'll have to say it is enough welder, as long as you know how to use it. I welder my perches on with a 110v fluxcore welder almost a decade ago, haven't had a single problem. And with a manual trans and a stroker motor running 35's, they take a lot of abuse. thats good to know. Is that all you've used to weld on your truck? If I remember your build correctly I've seen some nice fabrication.

I'll be making my final gear decision when it comes down to time for it. Sadly I'm a good bit away from getting to get them lol.

Now, I know I've been starting new threads a lot lately. Apologies for that. But theres just always questions I want answers for that the already made threads don't answer for me. I was going to pay a shop to change the clutch for me, but I decided against it when I saw the price. That 3-600$ can be put towards better things if I just man up and tackle it myself one day. Now my questions are... Can I do it? I'm going to try and find a place with concrete to do it but I might be stuck in a gravel or dirt driveway. How hard will it be to do it like that? What all do I need to buy? So that this will be a weekend swap hopefully without having to go to the parts store. Now, I don't have a tranny jack. I know that its recommended you have one... but I don't. I was going to seperate the tcase and tranny from each other to save weight, but is there a seal between the two? How do I take out the shift linkage? And I know the flywheel cannot be resurfaced, so what do I do about it? Buy a new one? And I think the last question is, whats a good write up for this proccess? I appreciate all replies in advance!

Nope The problem with expensive MIG welders is: They make you look at everybody else's cool stuff, make you dream of all the cool stuff you can build, then take up all your time building all that cool stuff...Then you realize you need a bender...then a tube miter...then a bandsaw...then a.... you said it... I want to actually be a fabricator as a proffession when I get out of school so it kills me not even being able to have a welder...

that's what I did to build the bumpers and suspension my truck. carved up the steel with a grinder and tacked everything together with my dinky 110 welder (a $65 harbor freight stick). then I paid a few bucks to have a pro burn it all proper. :D having the l'il welder allowed me to have more control of the build process and save a ton of money over buying other peoples' bumpers (which I wouldn't have been completely happy with anyway). I have a buddy with an expensive MIG welder. Probably could get a cheap stick welder and do like you did then head over to his house to finish it up. The problem with expensive MIG welders is also the amount of space they take up. I hardly can fit an extra couple power tools in my tool room lol

I run 80 on the highway and wheel often with 32's and 3.55's is that with a stick or auto? My brother had a XJ with an auto and 3.55's with 32's and it was still peppy.

For the spring perches, will definitely use a bigger welder, then. I just got a better job so I may save up for a good MIG welder to use as a Flux core until I get a enclosed spot. I learned a lot from this thread, though. Thanks for all the replies, guys :D
-
Dang it the guy sold it before I got back to him. Sucks. But, I will be looking for a used flux core unit like that now. Didn't realize they could sell so cheap. I'll jump on the next one!
-
Thats a possibility right there. My brother in law said he would go in with me and pay half cause he wants a welder to play with. Pretty sure I'll be getting it, now. Do you think it would be strong enough to put spring perches on an axle?
-
I want an explorer 8.8 with 4.10's SO bad. If I decide to search hard enough for a front axle then it will be which rear one I get.
-
I've got 3.07's. I've heard they're terrible with 31's. I think my 30's right now are pushing the gear limits. I really want to get 4.10's but finding a front axle stock with them will be rough from what I hear.
-
If I had somewhere enclosed to put a full size MIG welder then I would save up and get one. Just don't have anywhere to work lol. Figured with this welder I could practice and have most of the technique behind MIG welding downpat before I get into school. And possibly fix up my exhaust and other small things. Definitely wouldn't be an every week welder. I'm guessing that 3/16" would be about the limit for this welder?

A buddy of mine is selling a CH 110 flux core welder for 100$ and it comes with some wire. I could probably talk him down to $80. Is this a good deal? I've never welded before but its what I wanted to go to trade school for. The reason I'm interested in this welder is cause it's flux core so I could use it outside. I don't have a garage, so. My brother in law knows how to weld so if I got this he could teach me. It wouldn't be for nothing thick. Just small projects on the Jeep sometimes. Opinions?

Can't wait to get new gears so I can get 31's...
-
I've seen the ever so slight differences in them and I actually prefer the TJ ones. And, you know, they were super cheap :D
-
those look good. 31x10.50 I'm guessing?
-
Which means with the difference in backspacing between it and what I have on the Jeep now, it will pull the tire a 1/4" away from it. Hey, can't beat that :D
-
I researched and figured that out before I bought them. Couldn't turn up good rims for that cheap even though I would kind of prefer 7's right now. Will them being 8" wide cause any problems? No topics mentioned them causing trouble, but who knows lol.
-
I was actually going to plastidip my old set of rims but since I got this set I'm not worried about it. I don't do rocks, yet, other than gravel backroads lol. I prefer black over chrome. But some classic cars just need to have chrome, in my opinion.

Fixing Fuse Block
Knucklehead97 replied to Knucklehead97's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Not great. Rosin-core solder is used for electronics soldering and not generally used for other types of work. If it doesn't say "Rosin-Core" on the label, it isn't rosin-core. Radio Shack is still the source for electronics soldering supplies IMHO (until they fold completely, which could be any day now). theres not even a radioshack here anymore. But I got some 60/40 rosin core from Ace today. Getting the gun next chance I get. -
Fixing Fuse Block
Knucklehead97 replied to Knucklehead97's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Figured as much. I mean why would they make it easy for us to replace, right? -
Thanks for the tip lol :D I liked them in black more than I thought I would.

Fixing Fuse Block
Knucklehead97 replied to Knucklehead97's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Do you happen to know if all the wire colors will be the same on both blocks when I get to cutting and splicing? I'm going to do it one at a time, of course. But it would help a little if they were the same color -
Fixing Fuse Block
Knucklehead97 replied to Knucklehead97's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The 84-93 fuse blocks are all the same. The terminal configurations are varied though depending on vehicle equipment. hmm, in the way that certain terminals will be in different places relying on which package you have? Or just some terminals will exist on some Jeeps while others will not, like say, foglights?
