Sticks in gear, enough that it's crippling

gear oil as in the diff gears? Or the transmission? The Transmission has plenty of fluid and absolutely no leaks. -
Sticks in gear, enough that it's crippling
drcomanche replied to drcomanche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
So what should I buy for it? Is it just a clutch kit change or should I look at the master or slave cylinder? Of all the tech experience I have, transmissions are one thing that is a complete shot in the dark. -
As the title states, I was at a stop light, granted there was a slight hill, and it just slowly lost rpms until it died altogether. It has never done this before, and I don't even know where to start or what would cause it.

Ok, sometimes when I'm driving it sticks in a gear. This has only happened with reverse and first gear so far, but when it does, it is either stuck solid in a gear(like reverse) or, as was the case today, when I shifted to neutral and tried to go to first it just wouldn't go, and when I tried to put it in reverse, it just grinded the gears. I'm really having some difficulty getting it mobile like this, and it is frustratingly annoying when it happens. It happens most frequently when I'm backing out of my driveway, it just gets stuck in reverse and I can't get it out of gear. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, after getting the Comanche on the road, there are some small thing(some not so small), that I have noticed. Overall, for a vehicle that hasn't gone over 35 mph for about 3 years, it handles 55 quite well. #1 At about 45, there is a rapid vibration that lasts until I hit about 48. It vibrates the hell out of the truck, but no real death wobble results from it. #2 The truck DOES have death wobble, but it really takes quite a bump to coax it out of the truck. I have had the unfortunate experience of it only a few times, but it's never very often. Slight bumps don't really do anything to it, except one time when I was going around a broad left hand turn at 50 or so. #3 While driving, whenever I come to a stop, the engine stays revving at about 1500 rpm for a few seconds and then drops back down to 1000. #4 Every time I turn, I can hear a popping sound from drivers side underside of the truck. I had heard this before and noticed that my track bar drop bracket bolts were a bit loose, and it was moving up and down on the upper bolts. I tightened them down enough that I broke multiple tools to do it, but got it. I still hear a popping from that area though. #5 I'm not sure if it's just the age of the transmission, but sometimes, I have a REAL problem getting it out of a gear or into another. Like I have to full on jam it in. It doesn't grind, it's just tough, like it's locked into gear. When I'm driving, on occasion the shift feels a bit rough, but general slides right into gear. #6 There are a whole slew of noises from the engine and that area that. One is whenever I let off the gas while going maybe 30 to 50 mph, I can hear a very light grinding or tapping noise. It's not valve tap(although the truck does have that) but it also happens whenever I get it up over 2000 rpms at those speeds too. #7 Lastly, does anyone know where I can get the plugs that go into the floorboards and firewalls. I have one on the drivers side, but the passengers side plug is missing, and I have no firewall plugs. It would help a lot with keeping noise out of the cab and the warm air in for the upcoming winter. Thanks for the help in advance, and hopefully, with a little work, this will be a minor process.

New rear bumper!!!!!
drcomanche replied to M1A1TankerTom's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I really like that bumper. I've been looking for one that also gives the extra armor on the sides, too. Why do I have to live on the east coast?? :fs1: -
DrComanches Project "Frankenstein"
drcomanche replied to drcomanche's topic in MJ Hardcore Tech: Epic Journeys to Greatness
Sorry about the wait. I believe they are two inches, at least, but I'll check it out at some point in time this week. I've been kind of distracted by constant truck work. In other news, after only a few days of driving, I experienced, for the first time, death wobble. This is unfortunate considering I got a custom made track bar for this reason, but I kind of expected that that wouldn't solve the problem. Next paychecks alotment will be going to a few parts to hopefully remedy that situation. I also just recieved the mud flaps I was talking about and repainted the metal. They seem to be very sturdy. They are from a company called Lowrange Offroad, and they seem to be a just about a perfect fit for the Comanche, almost like they were made for it.- 146 replies

DrComanches Project "Frankenstein"
drcomanche replied to drcomanche's topic in MJ Hardcore Tech: Epic Journeys to Greatness
Guess who just made their truck a road legal vehicle? That's right. I can now torment the whole of my county with my Comanche. Should be fun! As for the driving part, it seems to be relatively free of death wobble up to 50mph. At that point it's wobbling or vibrating a bit. I'm thinking that's because the tires were never balanced, any ideas? I've also noticed that when I turn there seems to be some slack in my steering. It takes a few seconds to properly respond to my turn and begin to turn. I'm not sure if it's the steering box that's flexing because of the large tires or what. I may invest in a steering box brace anyways, just for piece of mind. I can here a slight on off hiss after driving it for a bit coming from the front of the engine. Otherwise, it's all good. God I'm glad I can drive it now.- 146 replies

Not DDing it yet, but very very close. I still have the coil spacers, and they're yours if you want them. I don't know what company made them, but you can have them for 10 bucks. :brows:- 146 replies

DrComanches Project "Frankenstein"

So, now that I had a bunch of time to work on the truck, I have gotten quite a bit done. Some long nights and early days in the cold, but a lot of progress was made. I looked back through some of my old parts, and found some useful ones in amongst the others. In that box I found: one passengers side manually adjustable mirror, two courtesy lights, black seat belts(to replace my ugly frayed tan ones), and some wires at the bottom, one of which looked very familiar. That wire ended up being the wire that connects my speed sensor in the tc to my wiring harness. Combined with my 41 tooth gear I found in my extra tc, I now have a speedometer. That alone was worthy of a days progress, but I also installed the one manual mirror, after painting it with spray on bedliner coating. I found out that the courtesy light wiring was shot, so I'll have to rewire it somewhere. After doing a voltage test on the horn wiring circuit, I figured out that it's my horn that is broken. I took apart my dash as well, just to try to sort out some of this harness to harness wiring. It was, for lack of a better work, horrendous. I cut at least 15 to 20 feet of wire, some of which had no connection to either of the wiring harnesses. I grouped some wires together and managed to (somewhat) organize it, I put the dash back together and took it for a test drive. My power steering was whining a LOT when I took it around the block, but further inspection showed that it was also pretty low on fluid, so I just need a quick refill on that. The only other problem was that my passengers side front tire was really low on air. I have a slight time constraint on getting this project done now, since my current mode of transportation, my Jeep Libery, is about to be retired. I have one week to get this one on the road before I need to turn in the tags on the Liberty. In other news, it looks like I'll be able to meet that time constraint. i have pretty much everything I need installed for it to get on the road. Just some minor tweaks to it beforehand, and it should be fine. I really can't wait to dd this thing.- 146 replies

Project is looking good, and a Camaro to top it off? That's a pretty lucky score in my opinion. Oh, and gotta love the Ranger roll bar  -
DrComanches Project "Frankenstein"

Well, although I don't have any pics to add(yet), I have made quite a bit of progress on the Manche, with some help from my friends. For starters, I finally got a paint to stick, and dry  to the tank and straps, and in one go, got the tank installed and replaced all the fuel lines. Reinstalled my fender flares, and installed a license plate with a built in led so it would be legal. Later that night I tried to fire it up only to be disappointed by the results. The next night, me and a friend worked at trying to get it started. I purchased a fuel filter and a fuel strainer, in the hopes that something would give. Still no luck. But we did notice that when disconnecting lines on the fuel end, there was a LOT of air pressure and every time we get it started and try to keep it with the accelerator, it instantly killed it. The next morning, I went out and tried again. After looking around, and replacing the strainer, I noticed the problem.... My friend connecting the gas tank had mixed up the fuel in line with the return line... :thwak: Luckily, no damage to the fuel system, but when I disconnected the line to switch it over, I did get doused in gasoline because of the pressure built up. :fs1: Reconnected them CORRECTLY this time, and viola, truck starts and runs like it had never stopped. I also had a friend give me some quick disconnect mud flaps :brows: with a drop, and I'll be installing them soon. After that, its time for some historic tags and I'll be on the road.- 146 replies

New Fuel Tank, Won't Start??
drcomanche replied to drcomanche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I'll have to check that tomorrow. I plan on removing the tubing at the engine and seeing if it pumps out. -
So, I just installed my new gas tank, and after all the hard work, I went to turn it over and nothing. The battery kicks, spark is good. When I sit underneath of it, I can hear the fuel pump running, but after at least 12 attempts and nearly running out my battery, nothing. I'm not sure if its the filters or what, but it's not working. Any ideas?

Speedometer wire? Where is it?

Well, that's unfortunate. But on the bright side, there are no lack of Cherokees around. -
Speedometer wire? Where is it?
drcomanche replied to drcomanche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
It was converted to a later unit. The entire engine and drivetrain is from a 94 cherokee. Some of the wiring is spliced, but the most of it is the 94. -
loose vacuum hose or fuel vent hose?
drcomanche replied to drcomanche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Thank you, unfortunately, my charcoal canister already has lines running to it... Now I'm going to have to look that up. -
I have a hose that is draped over the back of my engine. One end doesnt connect to any thing while the other connects to metal hose, which runs all the way back to a t vacuum connector, which runs to both of the top vent plugs in the gas tank. Should this hose connect to anything? I'm at a loss trying to find anything it could go to.

Today, I installed my speedometer gear, which is a good step towards being able to tell how fast I'm going, but I'm still missing the wire that connects to that. Does anybody know where I can get one? Or, perhaps more importantly, does anybody know where it connects to? I looked at my guages, and it's an all electrical housing. I just don't know where to be looking for a connector, and I have a LOT of disconnected/hacked wires.

DrComanches Project "Frankenstein"
drcomanche replied to drcomanche's topic in MJ Hardcore Tech: Epic Journeys to Greatness
Haven't posted in a while, but Iv'e been working. Today, I made some minor progress. For starters, while moving around my other tranny case, this fell out. It just happens to be exactly what I need for my case in the truck. 41 teeth, one over, but shouldn't be too bad. Installed it in my case and pulled out the old 34 tooth gear, which had a bunch of teeth missing. Now, I just need the wire that goes from that to, well, wherever it goes. I have been consistently trying to paint my gas tank and straps and what not, only to learn that Rustoleum doesn't make the best undercoating... The paint still hasn't dried, and it's been a few weeks. I'm going to scrape it off and redo the paint with some spray on bedliner coating. I got tired of waiting and just installed my track bar and steering linkage. I'll just have to repaint it later. Here she is all straightened out (although it is leaning to one side. She's kind of parked on a slight hill. And the final progress for the day, I fixed my key getting stuck in the column problem. I fabbed a bracket out of an old plastic piece left over from a head unit install. It fit right over the rod and held the plastic connector in place, so now I don't have to reach under the dashboard to get my key out. Pretty good day of work, I'd say.- 146 replies

Finally got around to fixing this problem. Although it isn't the prettiest fix around, it is solid and will hold. I took an angled piece of plastic from a head unit install kit(although, I'm sure this could be done more effectively by making it out of sheet metal) and drilled a few holes (for adjustability), and hack sawed off some edges, and formed a channel for the bar. It slid right over it and over top of the plastic connector that is attached to the top of the bar. By blocking that pieces movement, I can shift the key in ignition without having it lock in place. All of the gauges and bezels clear it perfectly.

Man, a jeep lawnmower?! I Think that thing is great, although I would probably fab it out of metal, like sinkrun. It seems pretty simple, though, so maybe I could just fab up a custom build? Woodworking really isn't that hard.

Speedometer gear for 5.13?
drcomanche replied to drcomanche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
So, while working today, I found this in one of my spare transfer cases. 41 teeth. Were all the gears the same or does it differ by company? Want to make sure I have the correct one. I know it's one tooth over, but at some point, I may be switching over to 37 inch tires anyway. -
