I'm actually doing the "fullwidths or not" debate right now. I could just leave it fullwidth and get a truck 8.8 and put my disk brakes on it and sell the explorer 8.8 and spacers. Then I'd not need adapters. Or I could get a real rear (60FF) and not have to convert the front from 8 lug.
Pat, if I decide to go 5-bolt we can try to work something out. Shipping is a b*@$£ though.
I got a F250 HD HPD44 housing and outers. Sucker has 1/2" tubes! Outers are machined for high-steer, and I might be getting the arms for free or close to it.
It will be narrowed to run waggy shafts, which I will get tomorrow. Then I will have to decide if I'm gonna keep it 8-lug or go to 6 or ford 5. Ford 5 makes the most sense, I think.
Oh, and I have to track down a R&P and carrier.
Not sure. I've got a 76 Ford HPD44 that I can get for a reasonable deal. Then I'd cut it down and run waggy axle shafts. It's oddly enough already got chevy outers with the 6 bolt pattern. But I'd have to regear it, as it has 3.54s or some $#!&. I was hoping to find one with 4.10s and then just lincoln lock it and call it good.
It's that or fullwidths and 1-tons. The local yard has a lot of D60s, front/rear. I could get them in 4:10 stock without an issue. Maybe even deeper. Just it's kinda stupid to run 1-tons for 35s. Then I'd have to buy 40's, eh? Oh, and the pocket book might hurt on that.
I've still got to check the pick'n'pull and see if it's got anything I can work with.
The pinion is messed, it's hard to see in the pic. I took most of a tooth off of it.
Near as I can tell the truetrac is sitting there going 'Stupid R&P, why do you have to be so kitty"
I'm gonna pull it out and check. Then sell it.
Well, things got a little iffy because my rear D/S got f'd. Then I got slightly bound up in 4Lo, well, Front 2Lo basically, and she just gave up the ghost...
Kinda like "CLANK, clank clank clank clank"
Look at it as a cost vs reward situation. There won't be much of a difference in the gearing, although the 4.56s would be nicer. However, having to get two axles regeared would be moocho expensive, eh?
Those 12 pointers that I got from the stealership had red-locktite preapplied.
10 minutes? @#$%, try half a day.
(Oh, and if you're asking about my avitar... it ain't gonna change!)
I'm going to try using pinon flange shims (if you can call them that) to compress the D/S 1/2" more than it was before. Hopefully it won't bottom out.
Oh, I got the thing out. Gonna start teardown tonight and see what's going on.
Where about do you live?
My 4.0/5spd gets pretty decent milage. My driving habits and tire size are really the main issue though. For a true DD only I'd probably get a gutless 4cyl. But they're pretty boring. The 4.0 at least lets you have some fun.
My rear driveshaft slipped out (Odd) and kidna messed it's splines. Thus I couldn't get it back in. I turned around and 2wheeled it out. Other than my front axle went boom.
It was a good night. I'll get her tomorrow.
