Installing Fog Lights
Kenosha Warrior replied to Kenosha Warrior's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Wattage doesn't matter. Under American law, fog lights MUST be wired such that they do not operate when the headlights are on high beam. I doubt that Canadian laws are different in this regard. All this means is that you don't take the 12 volts to the toggle switch from the battery or fuse panel, you tap the wire going to one of the low beam headlights. That's the simple way. If you want to be able to run the fogs with just parking lights (no headlights) and do it legally, then you need two relays and it gets more complicated. NOTE: DRIVING lights are the opposite of fog lights. Driving lights must be wired so that they operate ONLY with the high beams, and turn off when you dip to low beams or turn off the headlights. Again, I assume (always dangerous, I admit) that Canadian law is the same. I do believe that these are driving lights, not fog lights, now that I think of it. They are extremely bright. Majorly bright. I just want then hooked up to a simple toggle switch as I don't use them unless I'm coming home from work at night, it gets extremely dark out there and always has low visibility. That or when I'm taking it offroad. -
for a minute there, I thought this was a spam post, but then I saw 2.8 and 4.0 and I was relieved nice swap btw.

they're 55w, local law doesn't care about them, not as far as I know. -

switch is illuminated, I can get a plain aluminum toggle switch, can I do a ground wire to the battery neg terminal? a relay, I really must sound dumb, but I'm learing as I go. what would this kind of relay look like? and where would I get one? Napa, carquest or Canadian Tire? -
Ive got a set that have the switch, 2 lights, and a lead that needs power, it has an inline fuse. How have you guys hooked up foglights or trail lights, where should I get power from, the ground is ok, right to the bumper, under the light. Any help is most-appreciated.

ahahaha! woo! Colton 1- Bitchy alt 0 I figured that I'm not missing a good night of jamming and movies at a friends house care of a crappy alt/ornery Jeep, so I packed up my stuff and took off. I have all my lights, and power, and wipers, horn, heat. all brighter, louder, faster and hotter than when I got the truck! it must have been a dead alt and just me not running the truck with the 2nd one that I got today -

you may be onto something. what wire is this. the one that is bolted to the back of the alternator? Ive got 2 wires on a plug that plug in, and then I have the big cable-like wire at the back. with the engine off I get 12.v and when its running, I still get 12v (it fluctuates a little bit) -

Ok, puzzle time. brand new alternator. same company and everything. still not pushing out more than 12.50volts. what affects the alternator's output. What does that little plug on the top do? I spoke with a mechanic at the Jeep dealership, I was told that these alternators need a 12v current to activate the exciter. Ive checked the wire that goes on the back of the alt. as the mechanic said, it should have 12v. it does. what the christ is going on? I'm at a loss and if I can't get it figured out, I'm going to have to take it to a mechanics. -

My cherokee is like that. One day the whole remote starter module fell out from under the dash and got caught under my brake pedal. I think some people were a little weirded out to see a cussing redneck throwing some sort of box with a bunch of wires hanging off of it into the ditch on the side of the road. yeah, all that crap is still stuffed up under the dash still. Ive got a spaghetti of wires under the dash, I need to clean it up. -

Hrm. This thing has a hacked-in remote starter. bare wires are pretty common in my engine bay. I'm going to see what is loose, not hooked up right and what not. One thing I'm going to check. tonite, I noticed my belt was extremely tight. like, no diflection at all, that doesn't seem too right. -

The alternator is dead. I had a new one that was DOA, too. Doesn't matter if it's new or rebuilt ... dead is dead. It should read between 13.5 and 14 volts across the battery terminals with the engine running. The gauges may be dead because there's a bad (or corroded) ground between the cluster and the chassis. alrighty then. Ill call up carquest and get a new one post-haste -
got the front end mocked up on the MJ...

thats what I'm hoping. the way tehy are connected, 2 of the wires I ran, the 3rd is a mystery. I'm hoping thats it. -
do it the way I do. bought an inline muffer for a neon, cut my tailpipe off infront of the tranny, and have the muffler dump it right out under the passenger door.

ok, refresh my memory as to how to check the alt with a voltmeter. do I put my leads on the battery cables or on the batt terminals, or should they read the same. Ok now Ive just thought of something, when this all went south on me I had recently driven it through a deeep puddle, drove home. all was well, this was xmas day. Boxing day, I went and installed fog lights, direct connection to the battery for power and ground. Wednesday I noticed my wipers were a little slow and laggy, thursday, I drove 100kms highway, then another 30kms running around town. I noticed it starting slower, long crank time, dim lights, I went and drove home. got home and turned it off, tried to turn it back on and I had nothing, no power, zip. zero. New battery was installed later that night. got my lights back, albeit still dim, drove out to a friends house (I still hadn't hooked my foglights back up yet) Had no heat, no fan, just dash lights, radio and headlights. Drove home, all was well, for some reason, about 5km's down the road, everything came back on, nice and reeeeally bright. Next day, same thing, everything is dim. I took CW longshot's advice, started the truck, yanked the pos cable off the battery and it stalled. So I went and searched out a new alternator, which went in wednesday evening. When I had first put the alt in, started the truck, it ran nice, bright lights and everything, so I turned it off, hooked up the foglights and left it overnight, till around 2pm today. Started it up, drove it nicely, did my running around, got home, I went to the bowling alley for a bit, and on my way home, everything started to dim badly, truck eventually died. this leaves me with a possible dead alternator, a possible dead battery, no foglights ( I can return them, so who cares) and no clue what going on. -

a brand new alternator would do that? -

not yet. Problem is they are brand freakin new. Battery is ~ 1 week old, alternator went in lastnight, brand new. no rebuilt, brand new. the voltmeter tells me this, if it helps. stand alone battery - 12.35v start the truck and run it > 12.35v ~ 12.40v stop the truck > 12.35v with lights, heater and radio on > 12.v or thereabouts, with the truck running. -

The RENIX computer in an '89 doesn't reset. More accurately, it doesn't need to be reset because it doesn't "learn" anything -- it automatically resets every time you turn off the ignition. It also doesn't control any of the problem items mentioned. You've got plain old electrical problems. yeah.. christ. I was on my way home tonite, and all of the sudden, everything got reeeeel dim. going through an intersection, bam. engine dies, no power.. whatsoever. coasted to the side, popped the hood. first thing I did was yank the foglights that are attached directly to my battery terminals... a half hr later, my grandparents show up, and agree that if it can start, they'll follow me home. I crank it over, slowly starts, but it starts. and I have lights. got home ok, charging my battery right now. Could hooking up those foglights to my battery, and using a 25amp fuse inline be causing my problems? -

Ill try that. my spedo works, fuel gauge doesn't, and my instrument lights are kinda dim, but they're there. -
