I also have a starting problem
MjPioneer replied to MjPioneer's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Pulled the starter. it seems as if it's begining to seize up. Dropped the tranny, clutch is fried. Oh and found that smokey drippy metal! Fly wheel in warped well I think thats it. Moral of the story, don't let some one else drive your rig. But ont he bright side these are just so new things for the Mj! -
Ladies, Gentlemen It's time for my daily thread. Went wheelin today, had a hard time getting up a certian spot on the trail, I had a friend wrestle my Mj through the muck. This guy beat the crap out of my poor rig. I didn't see this part happen but a friend did, apperntly my motor was smoking and shooting out what appeared to be dripping metal by the tranny. ( I have no idea if this actualy happened as I was behind the truck rather then in the front) Well after it got up and I got back in her she quickly stalled and died. The truck would not start so we had to pop start it, thus the problems began. When you turn the key the E-fan will turn on no problem as will the headlights, markers, tailights and blinkers. All elctrical things are working fine, But nothing else happens. You can turn it and turn and all you will hear is the soleniod clicking. I tried whacking the starter around with a hammer and that sorta helped kinda...Now it seems if you if you turn the key about 4..5 times the starter will spin and the motor will turn over for a second the starter will grind and click and turn the motor over again then grind some more then die. Sorta sounds like this Turn over grind turn over grind grind grind click click turn over grind die. The starter was replaced within the last 2,000 miles so I'm going to cry if I need another one already. I checked all the conections and everything is good, battery cables tight, starter cables snug as a bug, and everything inbetween is secure. Now the things we have come up with.... Starter is dead/has a nasty flat spot The wiring is really messed up Alt is dead? Motor over heated and caused internal damage (Thus smoke/dripping metal) making it not want to ever start again. Good goly without you guys I'd be screwed. Edit:Completly forgot about this, after this event the tranny makes a high pitch squeeling around 2,000rpm in 1st and 2nd idk if that has somthing to do with it

Just going to toss this out there. I have tested the following setups on my Mj, All tested by me. Stock fans 1 Clutch fan 1 E-fan=Temp-195-205 1 Clutch fan 0 E-fan=Temp-210+ 0 Clutch fan 1 E-fan=Temp-195-205 0 Clutch fan 0 E-fan=temp-210+ (...I wouldn't even try it..again) Daul E fans 0 Clutch fan 2 E-fan=Temp-180-200 1 Clutch fan 2 (mini)E-fan=Temp-180-200 "Light weight" clutch fan 1 Clutch fan 1 E-fan=Temp-205-210 1 Clutch fan 0 E-fan=Temp-210-215 Puller fan 1 Clutch fan 1 E-fan=Temp-200-210 0 Clutch fan 1 E-fan=Temp-210-215 0 Clutch fan 2 E-fan=Temp-205-210 Puller and Pusher combo=Temp-200-210 Taurus fans=Temp-185-205 (If wired wrong they will completly die on you well you are driving...) Currently I run a single E pusher fan and am getting a temp from 195-210 in 85-95 degree heat, stop and go traffic. I have mine wired to run constantly well the truck is running. I will admit it gets right past 210 in heavy traffic but will quickly go under 200 once I start moving. From all the testing I have done over the years I have found it most neccesary to get the heat away from the manifolds rather then the block itself. I would double check every thing in the cooling system before you dive head first into crazy fan set ups. *All test were done by me Mjpioneer. 1989 Mj Comanche Pioneer 4.0/ba10 closed cooling system. Test conducted between the mileage 250,xxx301,xxx* I hope this helps you, and anybody else considering fan set ups.

We have written permission from the owner to be on his land. We did get around to reporting it. We were told that someone would come around to "view" the vehicle earlier today, Nobody ever showed up.

I have a cracked leaf and my Mj sags a bit now on the passengers side. I want to replace the leaf but I'm to cheap to buy new packs or a used leaf. I have 2 Xj packs sitting in my garage and I was wondering if I could use the main leaf as the second leaf in the Mj pack. Think it would keep it around the same height it currently is? (5"ish Soa) on stock 4wd springs or do you think it would just sag on down? Thanks

We can be back there, but we're afraid that this will bring to much attention to the spot and they will close it up. They did the same thing to a similar location we could be at. After a few problems they fenced it all off.

Not a huge fan of the mounting set up, but I do like how simple it is. I'm a fan of very simple construction, and what beats a peace of steel with rings? If you could reinforce the mounts I think it would be a great bumper. Maybe I'll pick one up and test it out on behalf of CC

Long story short me and a few friends went wheelin yesterday on a local trail we often go to. Ussauly there is nothing going on in that area as it's a good mile in any direction to a road/house. We have never seen anyone else down there so its a great place to wheel, yesterday as we were going down into a mud hole we stumbled upon a burnt out BMW in the middle of the mud. Now I've seen my far share of abandon cars out in the woods before but this one is a little diffrent. It wasn't there about a week ago when I went down the same trail and it still appears to have plates on it. The exp tags were either removed or burnt in the fire. Should we report the car? More then likely it's stolen, or do we just leave it? If we report it I feel our spot will be ruined, but at the same time I don't think it's right to just let it sit. Another note there are about 12 cars on this trail that are in similar condition, but they have always been their since I first started wheelin here 5 years ago. Including a few cars that were pushed into the old quary out there. I'll try to get more pictures of them for you guys. Best picture I have of it, didn't feel like walking through mud.

Checked that out before putting it on, I don't need a stab anymore but I had a brand new one sitting there so why not?

Went wheelin today, truck died on the trail and would not start up at all. When key is turned the fan and fuel pump will go on but the starter itself does nothing. We pop started it and it ran fine, we let it sit for about 20 minutes and it fired right up on its own power, then we drove it to a gas station after getting gas it was doing the same thing the starter seemed like it was getting no juice. I tried wacking it with a hammer and still nothing. It seems like when the truck is at operating temp the starter works, but when it sits for a little bit it won't go. When you pop start it if you turn the key the starter will work fine but only if you give the truck a swift push. I'm not so sure whats going on here. Theory Starter is dead Soleniod is dead Wires are loose Also could the ingition itself be the culprit? We thought it could be but I'm not sure since it will give power to the fan/fuel pump. thanks guys

Guys!!!! after over 2 years of on again off again death wobble issues I have finally killed it! Turns out my toe was 2out in, and my stabilizer was destroyed. Me and a buddy took care of it in 20minutes. If I only knew back then!

I don't have the valve in the rear, that left the truck a few years back. I guess I will have to check the soft lines, and price out a master cylinder. Thanks guys.

Damn I was hoping it would be a direct swap. now as far as it being stuck it's like this, truck turned off the shifter won't move a inch, truck off clutch down it kinda shimmys a very little bit, truck on clutch down still just shimmys. Any ideas how to free this up?

I have the chance to grab a 87 Mj 178,XXX 4banger for dirt cheap. The tranny is stuck in reverse and I want to swap it out. I have a BA/10 sitting in my garage from my 89 6 cyl and I was wondering if it would work. Thanks

  Like always, I'm having a comanche related problem, my brakes are soft no matter what. I recently bled the system and they were tight. I had no problems with them for about a week then well I was driving home on Friday they went straight to the floor I could still stop but it was very slow to respond and they were as I said they were to the floor. This morning I finaly got time to bleed them, I got them done and went for a test ride and they were fine then out of kno were right back to the floor. I took her home and checked it all out I have no leaks what so ever everything is tight and they were just bled. So I bled again and got the same results, but then it got a little weird because I took it down to a friends shop and halfway their the brakes got hard as a rock on there own then got soft again and they would do this periodicly. I'm thinking my master cylinder is on the way out?

...........When your blinkers decide they don't want to work for the rest of the night and your forced to use handsignals ...........You notice during a rain storm there is just as much rain inside your truck as outside
-
You kno you drive an Mj if well driving another car pulls along side of you and points at your tire freaked out. You kno you drive an Mj if your scared to tap your foot to the beat of the music on fear of going through the floor
