You can just swap the internals. You do not need to change the entire housing. But only from an XJ/MJ/YJ as the TJ uses a low pinion (weaker) D30 and not the high pinion design of the others.

Rock-Trac swap? +any other automatics fit a 4.0
Incommando replied to olddog's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
My mistake. I thought that the 241OR was tagged as such. In that case there are two different 241J's and, besides the external webbing mentioned, the tag will say "2.72 ratio." This shows the extra webbing of the 4.0:1 low range model: Image Not Found and this is the 2.72:1 low range model: -

Just an FYI: The 241J and the 241OR are different t-cases. The 241J ( like the 241c and 241D) has a 2.72:1 low range and the external case lacks the re-enforcing ribs that are cast into the 241OR. The two are interchangeable and either will bolt directly to any transmission that accepted a 231J. IIRC the 3.7 & 4.7 share the same small-block Mopar )3.7/4.7 powertech & 3.9/318/360/new Hemi) bell housing bolt pattern. If so none of the later Grand Chero 5 spd auto's will physically bolt to a 4.0 I6 which uses the AMC bolt pattern. I believe that the JK's 3.8 retained the FWD Chryco pattern and the trannies use a unique bolt pattern to match it but that does not match either the RWD Mopar or AMC (4.0 I6) pattern but I am not 100% sure. Part of my belief comes from the fact that the Nitro is available with the Mopar-patterned 3.7 and uses one tranny and the 4.0 V6 ( which shares the minivan roots and bolt pattern of the 3.3/3.8) uses another. :hmm: -
Ferd, especially the 289/302, are very narrow 'tis true. I think the Buick makes a tidy package and are the lightest of that era of V8's. If my ever failing memory serves me a 455 Buick weighs about what a 350 Chevy does which is much less than a 454 Chevy.

Ummm...aren't 5.2 & 5.9 Dodges (really the 318 & 360 ) small block LA Mopars? The LA family( 273/318*/340/360) includes the versions for which they cheapened (IMHO) the "magnum" name. The basic architecture never changed and I am pretty sure they were all LA's before they were finally killed off in the early part of this century ('03? '04?). Might take a little more work on custom motor mounts, but I kinda think the AMC 360 would make a good swap motor because of the front distributor placement as opposed to the rear placement on an LA Mopar or a Chevy mouse. You could run an electric fan and not have to worry about firewall clearance so much. The bellhousing pattern is the same and it would bolt up to an AW4. It would bolt up to the sticks, as well, but I don't know if any of the MJ sticks were up to V8 torque. AMC and Mopar engines share nothing besides both offering a 360 cid engine despite popular myth. * early 318's were from a different, earlier engine family ( "A"- 277/301/303/313/318)

I don't see what the fuss is about. Total poser vehicle. A "4x4" with a bunch of plastic crap that makes using 4x4 nearly unpossible without extensive damage. "YES!! Let's destroy the approach angle by slapping on some gaudy crap that assures we can't climb over a parking curb without tearing it off!!!" This was another step toward the mall-crawler era. As a 4x2, take off the ridiculous grill guard and slam it and it is light years ahead of the underwhelming Street Jeep in appearance. Jeep having made a Power Wagon-ish show car ( all go, little added show ) would have fit Jeep and me much better. To each their own. This is just my 2 cents.

Motion vs Rusty's coil springs
Incommando replied to JeepNewb's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I have never heard a bad thing about M.O. customer service either. When I had a bad experience with Rough Country everyone agreed. Even the best that their defender could add was that they give you free stuff to make up for their constant mistakes. Again, re-selling other people's items is very, very common. Nothing wrong with it. M.O. may be more like many on-line 4x4 shops: an office and a website that orders things for drop-shipment from the manufacturers. If you are happy with the price and service than it is all good. -
Motion vs Rusty's coil springs
Incommando replied to JeepNewb's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Comanche County, I respect your opinion and right to state it. But my opinion is that wanting/needing to purchase products instead of making your own is not a license for a company to lie to you and/or steal from you. The off road world is full of companies who do just that. And telling other people about it is not just carping, but a "heads up." I have to wonder if you followed the link that TylerJY posted or, more importantly, the links within it. Many off-road places (auto performance in general) re-sell others' products. Heck, when I first visited the M.O. website it was immediately obvious that many of Motion Off Road's parts descriptions on his website were copied and pasted from the sources' websites. I saw this pointed out to him and it seems he has modified some of the descriptions. Here is another example of a product that he claims as his but appears to be bought and re-sold for a higher price: http://motionoffroad.com/catalog/index. ... ucts_id=65 http://www.rocky-road.com/comanche.html R.R.O. appears to be the source for his SOA kit and they are $56 cheaper. The ad copy used to be nearly identical. I assume he is an authorized re-seller or I would think that R.R.O. would put a stop to this. See this > http://www.rocky-road.com/wholesale.html The only disturbing part of this (to me, anyway) is this: "Model: MO3.9015 Manufactured by: Motion Offroad " It does look like many of "his" products are from other sources. I strongly suspect his cages are S&W ($100 cheaper there), as well. Again, if he IS making identical products himself ( which I doubt ) it is still wrong to steal someone else's design to re-sell at a higher price unless he is "licensed" to do so. A buddy knocking one off in a garage for personal use is not nearly the same thing. Is this wrong? Nope. Not until you claim that they are YOUR product that YOU designed and built. Although you may not have to say that you are sourcing them from elsewhere, making the other claims is wrong and calling someone on it is not "bashing" IMHO. That link above from TylerJY was very disturbing to me and probably others if you follow all of the links in it. I had been unaware of it. A good webs search may turn up other items of interest if one was so inclined. -

In some applications Rusty's springs have a rep for not holding up for very long. -
Will these axles work?
Incommando replied to pitbull4x4's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The Dana 20 is a transfer case. The AMC 20 is a rear axle that was only used in the CJ-era, never in a Wrangler. A CJ of that era would be a passenger drop low-pinion axle, not the most desirable. -
what tires do you recommend?
Incommando replied to mjtjnj's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
IMHO most M/T's are not the best choice unless you need an M/T. That being said, if you have a Pep Boys near you check out the Dakota M/T. It is a well siped M/T that I have used in Ohio's icy/snowy winters for over 40,000 miles. Works well off-road, too. I am replacing them 11/1/11 but I could easily get 50,000 out of them legally, just with reduced performance. The General AT2's are very well regarded in many circles. -
I failed to do my research before purchasing and had a problem. Only AFTER the problem did I realize who I was really dealing with.

80 bucks each or a set? Good source for the ZJ's?

Being a modest man, when I checked into my hotel on a recent trip, I said to the lady at the registration desk, "I hope the porn channel in my room is disabled." To which she replied, "No, it's regular porn, you sick S.O.B."

This outfit got booted from Pirate and Ebay under the name PORC ( performance off road center). Liars and rip-off artist. Don't be fooled by the cheap prices.

It is about a 10 minute process in Ohio: They walk out and verify the VIN on the vehicle matches the title, go in and run the VIN for stolen, and print out a new title.

Are JK tires at all compatable with MJ'S?
Incommando replied to Timmmmmy's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
JK pattern is the same as newer Grands: 5x5, not 5x5.5" like the older CJ's or 5x4.5 like TJ/YJ/XJ/MJ/ZJ. Most of the factory tires are not loved. But if you are just getting the tires you can usually pick up 16" KJ/Liberty wheels that are 16" and 5x4.5 like an MJ for cheap. I bought a set of 4 16" steelies for $60 and 4 alloys for $80. -
I'd move somewhere less hippiefied so that crap like that doesn't need to be listed on a title in the first place.

IMHO the best site for checking gear ratio/tire size combos or tranny/t-case/gear ration/tire size swap stuff http://www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html -
