  1. Nope. The steering shaft is the same, only the box is different between manual and power steering. Saved me quite the headache Eagle.  Appreciate it very much!
  2. Well, that's hard to do when I don't have the $ to throwdown on a $250+ steering part. I did searching too, but only found Power steering shafts. Mine is a manual shaft, does this matter? Wow, wish I lived out in CO, as the junkyards round here barely ever have XJ's. :fs1: :fs1:
  3. Problems on the rise... I swear I'm going to chop this truck into pieces soon. I'm getting that sick of it. Where can I get a steering shaft on the cheap (I need an intermediate, or so I was told)? Or is there such a thing (cheapest I've seen is $135) I need one to replace my shot one in the truck, to be able to install my steering box, to be able to adjust my @#$%ing tie rod ends and align my truck TO BE ABLE TO get it back on the road and have it drivable. Excuse the language, but I've had a really  @#$%ing day. ------- Edit to adjust things
  4. So... the fog lights I got for the truck seem to be... a little big? I did a mockup and they just seem really out of place. :hmm: Not sure if it's me, but for whatever reason, I'm not really diggin' on the ambers anymore. Oh well, I suppose I'll save them for another project in the future. It could just be because I think they'd look better when I got the new grille, and paintjob etc etc. Currently debating whether or not to get a bundle of XJ dash buttons (fog lighting, rear defroster, power tranny switch and rear wipes) for $15.... decisions decisions.... Kind of wanting to find a cargo light, but I doubt that will happen. Also beginning the hunt for black interior pieces. Can't wait to get my truck back on the road, I miss driving it like you wouldn't believe! :fs2:
  5. Got any pictures of the under the dash/floor lights? I don't think I've seen that mod done well, although I believe someone on the forum here did do it at some point. Just want to see where they would mount at. Great looking truck btw man, the aluminum valve cover is a great upgrade from the flimsy plastic one. Only reason I haven't done it is because I like the AMC logo on the edge of mine.
  6. Salutations, online compatriots. It is I, back with another rousing update. Lol. First off, I found some pics I took of swapping out my oil pan. I thought I didn't have any, but I took some during the whole thing  ------------------ Truck up on the lift, I was swapping in the new fuel filter and stopped to take a picture of my dad unbolting bolts from the pan and cleaning off the oil from the steering linkage. :ack: Getting the flywheel cover and bolts off. Nothin' fancy. 24 year old oil pan after it was taken off and cleaned up. What a pain in the  to get it off. Shot of the pan after we had to cut the exhaust off to get it back in. Thanks AMC. :fs2: Where we had to cut the exhaust at. Right before it elbows off in front of the pan and leads up to.... The port to the manifold. Pretty clean looking oxygen sensor if you ask me. Letting the truck warm up after we got the pan in, new fuel filter, new oil filter, spark plug wires, D-cap and button, etc etc. Picture of the junk in my bed. Diggin' the 2.5 emblem on there. :chillin: ------------------- Which, after all that, the truck ran well for about 3 days until the steering linkage started on its last leg. Which, has gotten replaced. But the truck is sitting around because I need a new steering box. :fs1: It was supposed to be here yesterday, but it won't be in til sometime next week. Happy birthday to me, I suppose. A picture of a random MJ I found at a local Publix supermarket. Pretty good rattlecan job if you ask me. Seemed in pretty good shape considering. ------------------- Pictures of swapping out the TRE's and drag link. Not really a lot here though. :fool: On the lift again, the truck is taking a liking to the lift. Wedding plans will be here one of these days... :shake: Putting on the TRE after struggling to get it off. I don't know what I'd do without Frank. Guy helps me out whenever I need the help, so it's cool. And the last picture I felt like taking, of all the nuts, bolts, tools and whatnot scattered around. You'd think I'd put them in a bowl or something....  ------------------- Also, here's a few pictures of some goodies I picked up last week online. Look at that classic, antique packaging. Sears & Roebuck? Didn't know Sears partnered with them back in the day. Some nice, brand new (although 33 years old) amber fogs that I've been scouring the ends of the earth for. (on the cheap side, that is. Picked these up for a whopping $18) They even had the original installation manuals for both of them. Makes my life simpler. Shiny chrome.... And a side shot showing the size of them. I haven't mocked them up on my truck yet (still waiting to get a chance to head to a P&P to find a foglight harness so I can wire up the buttons and whatnot I got a month ago) Slowly but surely, my truck is starting to come along. Hopefully I can get back to driving and enjoying it once I get the new steering box installed. Until then, keep on trucking everyone.
  7. Pretty much have to agree with Jim here, much as I dislike Fords in general. I've seen some go a few hundred thou. without any serious repairs needed. IMO: Fords were always an overrated truck to own; (mid 80's forward) especially now.
  8. Call me crazy, but I like this type of mirror a lot. :D Especially since I can pick up 2 of these for about $35 at my local auto parts store. It's a universal fit, and would require I drill holes into points in my door to keep the mirror bolted down. I have a few simple questions (depending on how you look at them I suppose). For those of you that have the third type of mirror on your MJ (right setup) how do you like that type of mirror as opposed to the "standard" type of mirror (first setup) usually found on our trucks? (Thanks go to FiatSlug for the nice mirror types picture   ) I've heard people say that the "Towing" type of mirror tends to shake around excessively at higher speeds, and can be a PITA to deal with.. :hmm: Other than it's obvious use for towing (which I will probably have to do a good amount of in the near future) are there any other major cons? IE: Premature rusting in the door from the holes drilled out to mount this flag type of mirror, etc? And, as far as replacing my current setup; (first setup on 2nd picture) since the mirror sits snug against the door preventing water from coming in, is there a part or piece off the old setup I can leave there to keep H20 from getting inside?
  9. Ha, yeah, I've heard that one a few times. Unfortunately, this time Tire Kingdom was in the right, although 99.9 percent of the time, they're just looking to make a quick buck. The gearing inside the box is all chewed up and is getting ready to basically fall apart, so It looks like it's time for a new box! :fs2:
  10. Not sure if that's exactly what it's called, but I heard that sometimes you can knock it loose when fiddling with installing/removing a radio (thus leading to air not coming out of your vents?) Anybody got a picture of this dubious object, and better yet, how to put it back where it should go? :dunno: Been searching the truck a while and can't seem to locate it. I ask, because this has direct correlation to this thread. Which, is over 2 months I've been without decent blowing air (mostly because I've been to busy/lazy to look more into it) http://www.comancheclub.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=31395
  11. Thanks for the tip Don. I have a bone to pick with ZJ's. (looking for a stock amplifier to run.) Unfortunately, it seems the only local P&P I have time to go to is... Always fresh out of any type of Jeeps. :( :fs1: Now, since mine is a standard, I'm assuming that I'll have to get one from a standard? Or are these things swappable without any negatives or downsides? The thing is... my dad didn't bother telling me this until I had already given the keys to the people to put the Jeep up on the lift... Not to mention the only thing I use them for is tires, which they usually have the best deals in my tri-city area. Believe me, I'll learn from this mistake. :shake:
  12. Yeah, I can understand that, but at the same time, I really don't enjoy going to this place for anything other than just picking up tires. It seems pretty farfetched when I have to explain that: I know that my steering box needs to be replaced. It's 24 years old, don't ya know. I don't have the money to spend for a $200 brand new box. That I have to drive 60 miles roundtrip to and from work 5 days a week and NEED MY TRUCK ALIGNED. And then they still don't want to do the work for me? Obviously my $80 + tax isn't enough to motivate them. I apologize if this sounds like a rant, but I was pretty upset this afternoon when everything happened.
  13. That's what I figured. As long as I've been tinkering with Jeeps (and other cars mind you), even with my basic knowledge, I knew that the guy was full of it. This of course was added upon by the very unhappy customers in the shop I talked with before all this occurred, and even my own father who went there for an alignment after he replaced his upper ball joints and sway bar. One of the guys looked at them both and said they were bad, AFTER BEING REPLACED ONLY DAYS PRIOR. :fs1: As far as slop goes, before I changed everything out, I had about 30 degrees of slop when turning to the right. I've "heard" that If I didn't adjust the screw on the box exactly correct, that it could cause more problems than if I simply bought another. But then.... what's the point of even having the screw there if someone can't adjust it? :huh???:  If I were to tinker with the screw, what ratio am I looking for when I adjust it? (IE: Certain amt of snugness, etc.)
  14. Installed some new parts for the Sport today. New Drag Link New Tie Rod Ends So after I installed those, I went to go get it aligned, because I can't afford to wait until another day or two when I can get it aligned for $20 by a buddy my dad works with. Took it up to Tire Kingdom for an $80 alignment. 5 Hours later of my truck sitting in the parking lot, they put it up on the ramp for TEN MINUTES if that, and come back in and tell me that "Well, I don't want to do the alignment until you get a new steering box put in, because it'd be a waste of time." So I rebutted with "Well, when I got the truck, it had play in the steering wheel, but not even close to enough to cause it to be a major problem. So you're telling me that you won't align the truck until I get a new box?" "Yeah, that's what I'm telling you." It basically ended with, "Get my @#$%ing truck off of that ramp, I'm going home." Question is: 1. Why are steering boxes so expensive? (just kidding, but do I really need a new one to have just the FRONT END aligned?)
  15. I love it when I drive down the road on my way to work (25ish miles one way) 5 days a week and I pass all kinds of vehicles there. I can't tell you how many times I've seen guys in built up Ram's, F150's, Rubicons, XJ's and generally every other "big manly truck/SUV" crane their necks out over they're dashboards or out there windows to look at my MJ pass by. Makes me laugh pretty hard most of the time. I met an older fella' a few months ago when I brought the truck up to the dealership where my dad works at to wash it, and he commended me for having a Comanche. His words were, "A Comanche? Wow, I haven't seen one of those in over 15 years. I used to drive one myself y'know." Needless to say, a lot of times when I go around where my old man works, I get looks from all the other employees working there, and in fact, I had an offer to buy my truck from another guy who works there! Pretty crazy stuff.
  16. Oh lordy, this is the funniest things I've seen all week. :rotfl2: I'm glad I can come home from a hard day's worth of landscaping to find this. But seriously? IMO, I would have tried out the 4WD before ever leaving the lot, that's just my rule of thumb. My whole ideal is, "If there's a button or a lever in a car that activates something, I am obligated to press, push, pull, or fiddle with it to see if it works."
  17. Thanks man, I'd appreciate it if ya did
  18. :D Thanks Slug, I spent awhile surfing to find them again. Best pictures I've ever seen of 'em. Yeah, sounds like a real pain. If I can't get a wiring harness from at least one of the XJ's I see in my local P&P, then there's something definitely wrong. Well... other than the fact I have really no time to visit the local Pick and Pulls nowadays... :(
  19. The GC unit can fit into the MJ's? I always found that pretty far-fetched simply because the unit looks monstrous compared to the XJ's... but that was always my own opinion.
  20. Took a trip to my local Flea Market today with a buddy of mine. We figured on walking around the place and just chilling before we both had to go get home to catch some Z's before we head off to work tomorrow. Spent a good amount of time around looking at different shops when I went into a shop I'd only been in a few times over the last couple of years. It was a shop selling all kinds of metal signs and wall memorabilia (from classic car stuff to television shows to sports team insignias and the like) and I start browsing through his goods when I happened to stumble across this beauty. Oh yeah, classic Willy's goodness right there. Not only was the price right (a measly $10!) this thing is almost 1 1/2w x 2 1/2h ft made of good quality metal (like a license plate type) What a steal! :brows: For another $10, I picked myself up a tribute to the first car I really fell in love with since I was a kid. As much as I'd like to admit I fell in love with Jeep first, it was Pontiac that I really fell in love with, more specifically.... The always awesome Pontiac Firebird. In fact, the next car I plan on buying down the road is going to be an '88 Trans Am with the HO 305 with the 5 Speed... Next time I go down to the guy's place again, I'll definitely be picking up some more of his Jeep goods and probably snap some pictures of everything else he has for sale.

    Just venting

Methinks you haven't lived in FL before. Or even now for that matter. Just because there are a thousand girls running around doesn't automatically make them good looking, or completely sane. In fact, for the most part, I've learned that most FL girls are pretty damn nutty. But that's my own 2 cents. Brandon, just keep trucking at it man, you'll get everything worked out soon enough I'd reckon. These are the trying times in a person's life that basically "make or break" a person. Only thing you can do is stay positive and look forward to the small things that make you enjoy yourself.
  22. Not entirely sure what you mean, but If you have it, and can send me a pic of it, I'll tell you if it'll work or not.
  23. Had no idea that ZJ's had the amplifier. I don't think I ever noticed one... :hmm: only thing I ever noticed was the disk changer in the back near the spare wheel. Thanks for the tips Jim.
  24. Need one of these babies. The MJ I pulled the factory fog light toggle switch from doesn't seem to have the harness. :( :fs1: Some cleaver person seems to have snagged it before I did. Looks like this Located here on the driver's side of the engine compartment. If anyone has one of these babies laying around, send me a PM and you're price. Not looking to spend buko bucks here. Also, make note that if you have one, I'll be sending the money via USPS, since I don't do Paypal. Thanks.
  25. Hey all, just wanted some info right quickly. :brows:  1. Partially deciding to scrap the idea of putting the 93 XJ Dolby Radio into my MJ simply because I'm tired of having no tunes and although the Dolby sounds great, it can't put out enough volume to match up with my 200wt speakers. Question is: If I buy an aftermarket radio, what type of harness do I need to get to connect to my factory wiring? I was thinking the standard "Chysler to such and such year" harness, but my truck was built during the last AMC year. Does this matter, and if so, would I have to get a harness off of Ebay? Or would I be able to use the Chry-Co wiring harness? 2. My Oil Gauge in the cluster is FUBAR, and I heard that you can unscrew the gauge and swap it for another. Is this correct?
